[00:49:15] <cradek> should we move up the 2.3 schedule? It would be neat to have a new cd by May 21
[09:00:31] <alex_joni> cradek: once 2.3.0 is released I can look into making a new CD
[14:18:16] <cradek> alex_joni: I know - that's why I wonder if we should push it up a bit.
[14:18:20] <cradek> BigJohnT: what do you think?
[14:19:01] <BigJohnT> morning cradek
[14:19:12] <cradek> hello
[14:19:28] <BigJohnT> what are we talking about?
[14:19:35] <cradek> the 2.3 schedule
[14:19:48] <BigJohnT> ok
[14:20:05] <cradek> since fest will be in may, and 2.3 seems to have stabilized, I wonder if we should push it up a bit
[14:20:20] <cradek> to give alex time to have a cd ready by then
[14:20:29] <BigJohnT> I don't see why not
[14:20:39] <cradek> NAMES would be another goal but that's pretty soon (5 weeks?)
[14:20:46] <BigJohnT> I think the manuals are in pretty good shape
[14:21:14] <cradek> your doc improvements are nearly all that's going on
[14:21:48] <cradek> that's good to know - I didn't know if you had any other big doc work in mind before the release - the new cutter comp stuff is great
[14:22:16] <BigJohnT> let me check today all my notes to make sure I'm up to date with everything I noticed
[14:22:41] <BigJohnT> I cleaned up my desktop this morning so now I can find them all :)
[14:23:35] <BigJohnT> what date are you considering?
[14:23:54] <cradek> hmm, we should see what jepler thinks, he's the release manager again
[14:24:10] <cradek> ack, gotta run
[14:24:17] <BigJohnT> ok talk to you later
[14:25:52] <BigJohnT> oh, some of the sample ngc files need to be removed or updated for the comp
[14:31:46] <steves_logging> steves_logging is now known as steve_stallings
[14:32:40] <steve_stallings> NAMES show is 18-19 April, kind of soon, but Dale does plan to hand out lots of CDs there
[14:47:09] <alex_joni> steve_stallings: yeah, but pushing another beta release (even if today), then announce it on the users list (to get some feedback), then wait for a couple weeks before pushing the final release might not quite make it for NAMES
[14:55:27] <jepler> if you guys think the tree is in good shape for another beta, go ahead and tag and make an i386 release .. I have other commitments that keep stealing my time to do it
[14:57:15] <alex_joni> jepler: well, the only thing that is holding me back, is that you mentioned some stepconf bugs you want to investigate
[14:57:29] <alex_joni> I could probably try to do that, but I'll be mostly useless at fixing them :)
[15:25:13] <steve_stallings> Was there ever a solution found for automatic updates of non-RTAI Ubuntu reconfiguring the default boot sequence so that novice EMC users boot the wrong system?
[16:49:27] <SWPadnos> steve_stallings, I think the solution there is to remove the -generic kernel
[16:49:37] <SWPadnos> like apt-get remove blahblah
[16:49:57] <SWPadnos> then there will only be one kernel, the RT one, that gets updates and futzes around with menu.lst
[17:12:09] <cradek> also yell if I could help.
[17:32:13] <steve_stallings> Could the apt-get of EMC be setup so it edits the boot sequence so that user must always select system to boot, or heaven forbid, make the RTAI one primary?
[17:41:18] <alex_joni> steve_stallings: no, you don't want to do that
[17:41:41] <alex_joni> there are potentially unlimited combinations and odd things inside menu.lst
[17:42:01] <alex_joni> if the user install starting from the LiveCD then they only have the -rtai kernel installed
[17:42:25] <alex_joni> if they started from the generic install, and the rtai kernel works, then they can remove the regular kernel, or change the bootorder themselves
[17:50:58] <steve_stallings> Yea, I guess anyone installing EMC with atp-get should be able to understand instructions for editing boot sequence. If they start from the Live CD, they never get offered Ubuntu 8.10 right? Or is that the source of the problems people are having?
[17:51:25] <alex_joni> 8.10 is unrelated to the kernel naming issue
[17:52:16] <alex_joni> steve_stallings: our kernel is called 2.6.24-16-rtai
[17:52:30] <alex_joni> the standard ubuntu 8.04 kernels are 2.6.24-xx-generic
[17:53:02] <alex_joni> any newer version they release has a name that gets sorted before our kernel in the grub menu.lst
[17:53:20] <steve_stallings> So, will an EMC2.2 Live CD install get corrupted because Ubuntu offers an update to 8.10 which, if the user accepts, will cause the wrong kernel to boot?
[17:53:28] <alex_joni> yes
[17:53:42] <steve_stallings> OK, that is what I wondering if we had any way to avoid.
[18:02:57] <alex_joni> I don't think so
[18:03:11] <alex_joni> otoh, I don't know of a pattern that causes that update information to appear
[18:03:24] <alex_joni> on my install I haven't seen a button to upgrade to ubuntu 8.10
[18:04:18] <steve_stallings> Me either, but I remember that there was some discussion of users having some sort of problem like this.
[18:04:52] <alex_joni> afaik, you only get upgrade suggestions from one LTS to the next
[18:04:59] <alex_joni> e.g. going from 6.06 to 8.04
[18:05:03] <steve_stallings> Perhaps, they didn't see a button, but asked for it anyway.
[18:05:09] <alex_joni> the kernel issue is a different thing
[18:05:19] <alex_joni> steve_stallings: it's pretty hard to ask for it by mistake ;)
[18:05:28] <steve_stallings> Oh, that must be it. Users with 6.06 were having the problem!!
[18:05:40] <alex_joni> well.. I upgraded a 6.06 machine to 8.04
[18:05:52] <alex_joni> and it sorta worked eventually
[18:06:21] <alex_joni> what happened is during the upgrade process it removed emc2 (because the upgrade procedure didn't know where the 8.04 repository for emc2 is)
[18:06:41] <alex_joni> so I had to run the emc2 install script (just as if I had a clean ubuntu install)
[18:07:03] <SWPadnos> you have to use special command-line incantations to get the option of upgrading from LTS to non-LTS
[18:07:27] <SWPadnos> or set a relatively obscure option in a synaptic/update manager config dialog
[18:07:30] <alex_joni> SWPadnos: right, or mess with synaptics and the name of the repos
[18:07:38] <SWPadnos> yep
[18:07:43] <alex_joni> change hardy to jaunty or such
[18:07:46] <SWPadnos> either way it's manual, and you get to keep all the pieces :)
[18:08:44] <alex_joni> indeed you do
[18:09:48] <alex_joni> anyways, the dist-upgrade from 6.06 to 8.04 was surprisingly ok for me
[19:34:26] <alex_joni> how does one open the stepconf.glade file?
[19:36:03] <cradek> with glade?
[19:36:13] <alex_joni> I installed glade-2 on hardy
[19:36:31] <alex_joni> and I opened the stepconf.glade file, but all I get are 2 empty windows
[19:36:40] <alex_joni> one called "window1" the other "dialog1"
[19:36:49] <cradek> hmm
[19:36:59] <cradek> sorry, I have no idea then
[19:38:11] <alex_joni> aha.. I see something that might be relevant
[19:38:18] <alex_joni> ** (glade-2:11221): WARNING **: Unknown widget class: GnomeDruid
[19:40:59] <alex_joni> * alex_joni installs libgnomeui-dev, hoping that helps
[19:53:32] <alex_joni> installing glade-gnome-2 helps
[20:21:37] <alex_joni> glade is officially crap imo
[20:21:42] <alex_joni> nothing you do can be undone :/
[21:00:14] <alex_joni> * alex_joni gives up on glade
