[14:31:26] <moopy> hiya, anyone know anything about using multiple tool heads simultaneously????
[14:32:48] <KimK> moopy: I worked on a twin-spindle once, does that help?
[14:33:08] -!-
Valen has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[14:34:15] <moopy> i dunno, i'm just wondering if emc supports anything to do with multiple tool heads, i'm not even sure I know what I want to do???
[14:34:51] <moopy> I am thinking of building a machine with three seperate tool heads
[14:36:06] cjdavis1 is now known as
cjdavis
[14:36:17] <moopy> the idea would be to take a g code file and have it automatically chopped into three parts that could be run by each tool head, cutting the program run time by three.
[14:36:28] <KimK> I guess the short answer would be that EMC2 supports multiple heads if you can work it the way EMC2 works, and EMC2 doesn't support multiple heads if you can't work it the way EMC2 works. Which I realize is no help to you at all. Maybe it would help if you know what you wanted to do.
[14:37:33] <KimK> Ah, OK, that's a popular solution to increase production, "throw more spindles at it". You just need the spindles to be on seperate machines, lol, then it will work for sure!
[14:37:36] <moopy> some code would have to synchronise each head and make sure no collisions between heads occured.
[14:38:31] <moopy> well i wanted to have all three heads on the same machine
[14:39:02] <moopy> I was thinking of making a 3d printer
[14:39:26] <awallin_> with three heads? :)
[14:40:04] -!-
L84Supper has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[14:40:15] <moopy> I thought could be necessary to run multiple heads to lay down support material at the same time
[14:40:34] <KimK> If each head can block another, I don't know if that's going to be that helpful to you. Now if it was something like a rotary table system, where the part is worked on sequentially, with full access at each station, then maybe you'd have something.
[14:41:07] -!-
Athlocatle has quit [Quit: ]
[14:41:48] <moopy> emc could do all the route planning so heads don't block each other???
[14:41:54] <KimK> But this would be helpful only if you wanted to produce *lots* of parts faster, it would not help at all to produce *one* part faster.
[14:42:30] <KimK> That
[14:42:33] <moopy> well the idea would be to produce one part faster and also lay multiple materials down simultaneously
[14:42:35] <KimK> s oops
[14:43:11] <KimK> That's not what EMC means by route planning, or travel planning.
[14:43:47] <moopy> sounds like emc does not currently support anything that would work??
[14:44:30] <KimK> Yeah, I think if you're running a 3d printer, multiple heads will not always be useful. Especially on small parts relative to head size.
[14:45:36] <moopy> i think maybe just some external code to chop up a gcode file and make sure no head is in the same region of space at the same time.
[14:46:08] <moopy> then run three instances on emc one for each head
[14:46:11] <awallin_> with emc2 vismach you could perhaps simulate your machine and check for collisions in the g-code
[14:47:37] <moopy> I think as usual I will need to make some heavy reading of the manuals and possibly the source code
[14:47:39] <KimK> awallin: Vismach? Is that the same as sim?
[14:48:59] <moopy> all this puts me off the idea
[14:49:47] <KimK> How about multiple heads to extrude in different colors? (Only use one head at a time though).
[14:51:48] <moopy> I am not sure about the differences between vismach and sim?
[14:52:05] <moopy> vismach is a sim of the actual machine kinematics
[14:52:17] <moopy> and sim is just a sim of the tool path?
[14:52:47] <KimK> Oh, OK. I've never used vismach, I'll have to check it out sometime.
[14:53:07] <moopy> did anyone ever look at my python code for creating vismach configurations??
[14:53:27] <KimK> Did you send it to the mailing list?
[14:53:44] <moopy> I have not been on irc for months, and i basically dropped it and did other things
[14:53:49] <KimK> Or how did you submit it?
[14:54:08] <moopy> I only posted a link to my server in irc about a year ago
[14:54:32] <moopy> there is a tar.gz somewhere, so long ago i forget
[14:55:14] <moopy> I dont join mailing lists
[14:55:19] <KimK> OK. Why don't you re-post it to the emc-devel mailing list? I'm sure it will be well received.
[14:56:01] <KimK> Oh, OK. I'd post it for you and give you credit, however you want it.
[14:56:31] <KimK> Just "moopy" is OK, if that's what you want.
[14:56:52] <awallin_> vismach:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2lGAdaSL2k
[14:57:26] <KimK> awallin: Ah, thanks, I'll look at that for sure.
[14:57:45] <moopy> its not finished either, I really need someone who knows about the vismach opengl code and the denavit kinematics
[14:58:26] <KimK> Perhaps awallin can help you. awallin, would you like to jump in at this point?
[14:59:54] <KimK> Let me do that correctly. Perhaps awallin_ can help you. awallin_ , would you like to jump in at this point?
[15:00:58] <awallin_> sorry I haven't played with vismach that much... but there should be some examples included with emc2, or perhaps on the wiki
[15:02:08] <moopy> I got to the stage where I had spent quite a few hours, but I did not really have the knowledge to complete the program. I have never done any formal 3d mathmatics study, and the program was just a hobby hack.
[15:02:22] <KimK> moopy: Well, that's OK if it's unfinished, perhaps someone one the list can finish it. You can send it to me when you find it.
[15:03:11] <KimK> s/one/on/
[15:03:21] <moopy> I may have a look at the weekend, the server has been down for a few months now, I will have to check some backups
[15:03:58] <KimK> Sure, take your time. I'm generally here. Or my window is, anyway.
[15:04:12] <moopy> i think i called halitosis, if you can be bothered searching the logs
[15:04:39] <moopy> i cant even remember what the server dns was now
[15:04:43] <KimK> How long ago was this?
[15:05:05] <moopy> probably only a year ago
[15:06:29] <KimK> In #emc-devel? Or #emc?
[15:07:00] <moopy> probably most in #emc-devel
[15:07:47] <moopy> where are the logs online?
