[00:11:35] <KimK> andypugh: Which model is this for?
[00:13:07] <andypugh> I am not sure. I think it works for the PCL720 and PCL720+. I suspect it might also work with the PCI version, but they would't lend me one to test, and I have zero motivation to buy one for the purpose.
[00:14:17] <KimK> Oh, sorry, I thought we were talking about Mesa products. My mistake.
[00:15:11] <andypugh> No, Pete understands that lending out hardware to people who don't really want it is a good idea.
[00:15:36] <andypugh> I understand that lending hardware to people who _do_ want it makes no sense.
[00:17:35] <andypugh> Bt if I email a company and say "would you like to lend me a card so I can add support of it to our software with a user base of a few thousand, oh, and this all comes for free" and they say "no, but you can buy one" then they are misunderstanding the situation.
[00:17:35] <KimK> Ha, yes, if you find out they *do* want it, then you double the price?
[00:19:40] <andypugh> My terse reply "Thanks, but my enthusiasm for spending my own money to buy a card I don't need to write a driver for free software from which I make no profit is rather limited. We will stick with only supporting the old ISA card."
[00:19:54] <KimK> Yes, that last one is a shame, too. Especially if the hardware is good. If the hardware is bad, well, no great loss then.
[00:20:28] <KimK> What is this PCL720 (and +) that we are talking about here?
[00:20:36] <andypugh> Yes
[00:21:04] <andypugh> it is rather like a parport with more pins.
[00:21:15] <andypugh> And the driver looks just the same
[00:21:54] <andypugh> http://www.advantech.com/products/PCL-720%2B/mod_19B4A4F1-806F-42BE-9F9E-BE2155A0BBC2.aspx
[00:22:10] <KimK> Is there a link to their sales page? Ah, timely as usual, thanks!
[00:22:17] <andypugh> I do like the "breadboard area" that's a nice touch.
[00:32:29] <KimK> 64 channels is nice, but ISA?
[00:34:05] <andypugh> That is why I asked about the PCI version.
[00:34:39] <andypugh> http://www.advantech.com/products/PCI-1735U/mod_1266300C-31B3-4C5F-97BB-EDED1AE21075.aspx
[00:35:02] <andypugh> Just the same, different bus
[00:36:26] <andypugh> $220

[00:39:09] <andypugh> I think they are missing a wave. There are quite a few CNC/reprap/etc folk spending money on extra parport cards who would pay $100 for that card. But they won't pay $220, and they need driver support. I don't think that Advantech have spotted that a new home/diy market has appeared in the last few years.

[00:43:30] <KimK> I have to wonder how many ISA cards they're selling, though. I mean, I know that companies will stick with a system because it's there, it's installed, they've been using it, and they don't like change, etc., and I'm sure there must be a few companies still running ISA systems. But surely these guys must have noticed the declining sales trend?
[00:44:04] <andypugh> I am sure they have. It was the PCI card I asked for.
[00:44:54] <KimK> Well, you tried, anyway.
[00:48:17] <KimK> Say, isn't that more than plain PCI? Doesn't their connector have an extra section? What, PCI-64 or PCI-X or something?
[00:48:58] <andypugh> This application is a fairly serious production machine where a lighting strike killed the original control PC (but not the interface card)

[03:20:06] <jepler> andypugh: you can test "reset" by setting up a pin so that it drives an LED. If reset isn't working at all, the LED will be as bright as it is with a regular output. With a short reset (say 1/20 of the base period) it'll be distinguishable from off, but much dimmer than full brightness
[03:20:24] <jepler> and you should be able to see the difference between 1/10 and 1/20 of the base period in brightness
[03:20:45] <andypugh> I don't have the hardware...

[03:21:30] <andypugh> This has been driver-development by proxy
[03:22:04] <jepler> for some reason I thought you were saying you didn't have the appropriate test hardware, not that you didn't have the hardware to test
