[00:16:50] <andypugh> I don't know what that mean
[00:16:52] <andypugh> s
[00:18:18] <micges> it means that comp modules can't be lgpl but pure c hal modules can
[00:18:44] <andypugh> OK. So, we can't use that comp then.

[02:31:53] <jepler> First, a factual statement: The terms of the LGPL2 are compatible with the GPL2, but the LGPL2 *string* for MODULE_LICENSE (the thing that license "..." compiles into) doesn't treat the string LGPL specially (it does treat GPL specially).
[02:33:27] <jepler> next, my opinion: I would rather see any component shipped with emc2 using the GPL license, and I'd also prefer that the code explicitly enable the "or later versions" clause
[02:34:13] <jepler> if the code is not compatible with the GPL at all, then I would be very reluctant to the source in emc's git or compile and ship the result to users.
[02:35:24] <jepler> If the concern is that you aren't 100% sure what the license is, then yes you need to continue the dialog with the author until he sends you a version that is unambiguous in its license.
[02:36:50] <jepler> the LGPL2 section 3 explains that you may opt to use the GPL for any code that comes to you under LGPL, so if the question is GPL or LGPL then we can mark it GPL everywhere and the question is put to rest

[21:27:20] <andypugh> Can I have some advice on whether a kernel "taint" from an LGPL module matters?

[21:28:18] <cradek> uh-oh, metaquestion

[21:29:49] <cradek> I thought he already changed it to gpl 2 or later
[21:30:05] <andypugh> He said I could change it.
[21:30:25] <andypugh> I was just wondering if it was necessary?
[21:30:46] <cradek> if it's necessary for what?
[21:30:58] <andypugh> In either case it seems to work and I am about to push it, unless you can recall any problems with it?
[21:31:14] <andypugh> If it is necessary to change the license from what the author typed.
[21:31:47] <cradek> did you get my changes incorporated already?
[21:32:22] <andypugh> I started with your pastebin, then added modparam documentation,
[21:32:31] <cradek> jepler gave us some facts and opinions about the license - I defer to his judgement
[21:32:50] <andypugh> That is actually all I have done, other than some testing, and a check that the string is valid before printing it.
[21:33:29] <cradek> I wish an updated version would come from the author, but it appears to be just fine to change the string, since (1) the author says it's fine, and (2) apparently it would be fine even if the author didn't say that
[21:34:18] <andypugh> I guess as it was LGPL, and we changed it, we get to choose the license.
[21:34:44] <andypugh> (I didn't see anything from Jepler)
