[00:09:48] <A-L-P-H-A> giacus. :P no
[00:09:50] <A-L-P-H-A> it's working now
[00:10:24] <A-L-P-H-A> les_w... stop entertaining guys... go find some women to entertain.:) hehe
[00:12:44] <A-L-P-H-A-2> yeeeeh! gaim irc
[00:12:46] <A-L-P-H-A-2> works
[00:19:51] <les_w> I played a diana Krall cut for anna...
[00:21:57] <A-L-P-H-A-2> who's Anna?
[00:22:10] <A-L-P-H-A-2> imaginary people?
[00:22:16] <giacus> hehe
[00:22:55] <les_w> haha
[00:23:03] <A-L-P-H-A-2> <shrug>
[00:23:26] <les_w> anna is K4TS here
[00:23:46] <les_w> giacus' friend
[00:25:03] <A-L-P-H-A-2> oh.
[00:25:13] <A-L-P-H-A-2> I was teasing her last night.
[00:25:17] <A-L-P-H-A-2> with D0GS.
[00:25:50] <les_w> ?
[00:26:33] <giacus> I think A-L-P-H-A-2 is using wpa encryption to talk now :P
[00:26:35] <giacus> lol
[00:26:40] <les_w> she still has her new dog right giacus?
[00:26:51] <giacus> yeah, a puppy
[00:27:24] <les_w> I only have chickens and cat.
[00:27:57] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/kyra.png
[00:27:59] <giacus> :D
[00:28:17] <giacus> A-L-P-H-A-2: btw, I can confirm ..
[00:28:35] <giacus> there were few other woman on th music room :P
[00:28:37] <giacus> hehe
[00:29:00] <A-L-P-H-A-2> oh... les_w was telling me about that room...
[00:29:15] <giacus> nice
[00:29:28] <A-L-P-H-A> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#head-5ead174a0b3294527486cd4d71ded66b40003f25
[00:29:53] <les_w> rabbit shirt!!!
[00:29:58] <giacus> haha
[00:30:12] <giacus> A-L-P-H-A: I use drivers from stanchina website
[00:30:20] <Jymmm> that's not a rabbit shirt... it's tonights dinner menu!
[00:30:25] <les_w> haha
[00:30:31] <giacus> http://xoomer.alice.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html
[00:30:50] <giacus> Jymmm: I like that shirt :P
[00:31:10] <les_w> what is that stuff in the glass? looks like ink
[00:31:23] <giacus> A-L-P-H-A: but I don't know it they're ubuntu compatible .. check for it before
[00:31:48] <giacus> les_w: red wine
[00:31:50] <les_w> marelboro and a glass of ink?
[00:31:54] <les_w> haha
[00:32:00] <giacus> an excellent wine maded in campania
[00:32:01] <les_w> ah wine
[00:32:26] <giacus> about 12 E. bottle I think
[00:32:31] <giacus> 3/4 liter
[00:33:03] <giacus> I also like Lancer from portougal
[00:33:09] <giacus> Lancers*
[00:33:23] <giacus> it should be all around the world
[00:33:25] <les_w> did the dog get wine and marlboro?
[00:33:38] <giacus> haha, not yet ..
[00:33:42] <les_w> heh
[00:34:19] <Jymmm> giacus I was just playing =)
[00:34:36] <giacus> ;)
[00:35:25] <Jymmm> les_w did you see my earlier question about a clear coat that doens't absorb stain?
[00:35:46] <A-L-P-H-A> they are.
[00:35:54] <les_w> no, but shellac spit coat works well
[00:35:55] <A-L-P-H-A> how do I tell what version of X I'm using?
[00:36:03] <les_w> or a vinyl sealer
[00:36:34] <Jymmm> Hmmm, never heard of a vinyal sealer, will google
[00:36:39] <les_w> k
[00:36:44] <Jymmm> ty
[00:37:02] <Jymmm> spitting shellac bugs huh?
[00:37:17] <les_w> it's just ethylene vinyl acetate random copolimer in an aromatic solvent
[00:37:32] <les_w> copolymer
[00:37:35] <les_w> duh
[00:37:38] <Jymmm> doens't sound as durable as PU
[00:37:46] <les_w> it isn't
[00:37:54] <les_w> it is a thermoplastic
[00:37:58] <Jymmm> yeah
[00:37:59] <les_w> as is shellac
[00:38:19] <Jymmm> is it? I thought shellac was just bug juice
[00:38:42] <les_w> yeah...it's bug juice...but it's a plastic too
[00:39:08] <les_w> old phonograph records were made of it
[00:39:15] <giacus> A-L-P-H-A: http://www.giacus.org/files/kyra3.jpg
[00:39:19] <giacus> :D
[00:39:26] <giacus> that dog
[00:39:29] <Jymmm> It's kinda strange to me... PU absribs stain but is more durable than the stuff that won't.
[00:39:36] <Jymmm> absorbs
[00:40:02] <les_w> It's all about surface energy
[00:40:29] <Jymmm> energy?
[00:40:33] <les_w> yes
[00:41:00] <Jymmm> surface density I understand, even understand surface tension, but never heard of surface energy
[00:41:04] <giacus> G'Night all
[00:41:09] <giacus> bedtime
[00:41:13] <Jymmm> g'night giacus
[00:41:15] <les_w> goodnight giacus
[00:41:22] <giacus> ciao, night
[00:41:42] <les_w> surface energy is surface tension for solids
[00:41:51] <Jymmm> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_energy
[00:42:34] <les_w> yes that seems a good article
[00:43:23] <Jymmm> Hey! you tricked me into learning something about physics! (and nothing explodes or goes boom either!)
[00:43:29] <les_w> so now you know
[00:43:39] <A-L-P-H-A-2> and knowing is half the battle
[00:43:44] <A-L-P-H-A-2> G.I JOE!!!
[00:43:49] <A-L-P-H-A-2> The real american HERO!
[00:44:01] <Jymmm> A-L-P-H-A dont make me hurt you
[00:44:27] <les_w> I have a kit to measure surface energy. It has calibrated fluids, and you measure contact angle.
[00:45:22] <les_w> example of high surface energy: very clean metal
[00:45:44] <les_w> example of low surface energy: teflon or a waxed car
[00:45:56] <Jymmm> pane of glass?
[00:46:04] <Jymmm> low, right?
[00:46:15] <les_w> clean glass can have pretty high energy
[00:46:37] <Jymmm> ok, I'm gonna have to read this article about 15 times then.
[00:47:05] <les_w> water will sheet over a high energy surface
[00:47:31] <Jymmm> but you just said a waxed car is low energy
[00:47:36] <les_w> we measure it in spring units like newtons/meter
[00:47:39] <Jymmm> and the water beads off of that
[00:47:49] <les_w> right!
[00:48:17] <les_w> the water has more afinity for itself than it does for the low energy surface
[00:48:20] <Jymmm> oh oh i misunderstood when you said SHEET
[00:48:25] <Jymmm> I was tinking bead
[00:48:29] <Jymmm> thinking
[00:48:31] <les_w> ah ok
[00:48:35] <les_w> so you get it
[00:49:15] <Jymmm> yeah, but doesn't surface energy realte somehow to density too?
[00:49:19] <Jymmm> relate
[00:49:23] <les_w> no
[00:49:43] <les_w> It relates usually to dangling bonds
[00:49:58] <les_w> only very clean surfaces have high energy
[00:50:14] <Jymmm> so sandpaper would have low surface energy
[00:50:16] <les_w> like freshly cleaned metal
[00:50:26] <les_w> water sheets rather than beads
[00:50:46] <les_w> sandpaper...don't know
[00:51:31] <Jymmm> ok, so where is "surface energy" a factor most (industry wise)?
[00:51:52] <les_w> the coatings industry
[00:51:58] <Jymmm> k
[00:52:24] <Jymmm> learn somethign new every day =)
[00:52:30] <les_w> heh
[00:53:23] <les_w> just remember surface energy and surface tension are the same units
[00:53:38] <Jymmm> ah, ok.
[00:53:52] <Jymmm> hopefully I'll never have to use either =)
[00:54:36] <les_w> If a liquid sheets out on a surface that surface has a higher surface energy than the liquid's surface tension
[00:55:48] <Jymmm> ah, ok, I get it now.
[00:56:11] <les_w> k
[00:56:22] <Jymmm> liquid A could bead on glass, where liquid B could sheet on the same material.
[00:56:25] <A-L-P-H-A> what happens when something gets absorbed/mixed together?
[00:56:45] <les_w> just more complicated
[00:57:03] <Jymmm> The word "energy" is what threw me a curve.
[00:57:25] <les_w> I understand
[00:57:35] <les_w> but it is energy
[00:57:42] <les_w> because it's a spring
[00:57:50] <les_w> potential energy
[00:58:04] <Jymmm> yeah, but not in terms I am accustom to... (electrical, gas, thermal, etc)
[00:59:27] <Jymmm> It makes sense now, just was never exposed to such things.
[00:59:49] <les_w> you need to make one of those little boats with the tiny slot where you put a drop of oil
[00:59:54] <les_w> and it runs along
[01:00:13] <les_w> was it oil or soap?
[01:00:22] <Jymmm> probably either one
[01:00:28] <les_w> soap reduces surface tension
[01:01:09] <Jymmm> ah, I was thinking of when I put soap into a grease pan, and hte grease goes "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK" and runs away
[01:02:05] <les_w> well soaps and detergents chemically bind on oils on one end and water on the other
[01:02:45] <les_w> but there was some science demonstration where you make a little boat with a hole and slot in it
[01:03:00] <les_w> you put a drop of soap or something on it
[01:03:07] <les_w> and it runs away
[01:07:41] <Jymmm> Yeah, I'll have to make a wax paper boat and tryit out =)
[01:09:51] <les_w> But in general surfaces don't want to be there. It takes energy to cut stuff up to make surfaces. Things would rather be in a big ball with the least surface to vbolume ratio. That's the lowest enegy state.
[01:11:23] <Jymmm> ah, cool. Maybe I shouldn't have been getting stoned in high school afterall =)
[01:26:13] <A-L-P-H-A> what's the glgears or something to test openGL?
[02:13:00] <skunkworks> ran a few amps though my drive - mosfets seem only start to get warm at 3+ amps.
[02:13:12] <skunkworks> no heat sink yet
[02:15:33] <skunkworks> The little motors I have had some sort of encoder on the back - with a lm339 chip on it. Can't get a decent signal out of it. not a good square wave. Need to make a schematic from the circut board to try to figure it out.
[02:18:41] <les_w> lm 339 is not the fastest comparator in the world...but ought to make a pretty good square wave in an encoder
[02:21:05] <skunkworks> it has 4 wires coming out of it - red black white and blue. I ass-umed that red and black are suppy. the blue to ground and white to ground are putting out a saw tooth wave at the most. at .3 volts.
[02:21:32] <skunkworks> when the motor is spinning.
[02:23:34] <les_w> could it be differential?
[02:23:52] <les_w> I use differential in all my encoders
[02:24:37] <les_w> otherwise you would need only one wire for the signal...not two
[02:30:09] <skunkworks> could be - I am just going to have to look at the circuit board better.
[02:32:55] <skunkworks> this was out of an old line printer if I remember right.
[02:35:22] <rayh> four wires couldn't be differential
[02:38:15] <skunkworks> I am not up on my encoders :)
[02:38:57] <rayh> differential is two wires for each phase
[02:39:01] <skunkworks> just going to have to make a schematic - and look it over.
[02:39:04] <rayh> one goes plus the other minus on each pulse.
[02:39:24] <rayh> so you would need six at least.
[02:40:08] <skunkworks> 2 for power - 4 for 2 balanced signals?
[02:40:17] <rayh> Exactly.
[03:18:45] <wholepair> NEED HELP!
[03:25:19] <skunkworks> what kind of HELP?
[03:27:58] <wholepair> CONFIGURATION
[03:28:22] <wholepair> Im doing some simple test - can I explain them to you?
[03:28:50] <wholepair> 1st ill tell you where im at then ill tell you what im doing.
[03:28:56] <skunkworks> I am a reletive newbe - but ask away and someone will help
[03:30:33] <A-L-P-H-A> where'd everyone go?
[03:30:35] <A-L-P-H-A> nm
[03:30:41] <A-L-P-H-A> I was scrolled up. duh.
[03:32:39] <wholepair> I settup ubuntu with emc2 and modified an ini file and a hal file to run my machine - I have a step and direction driven 3 axis mill - I start emc2 w. tkemc and can move my machine around in manual just fine - so I moved my zaxis to a point where I read 10" between the table and the bottom of the spindle - then I tell the machine in mdi to go 1" up and it only goes like 0.3"
[03:33:06] <wholepair> its not a axis scale thing because I know I set those up right.
[03:34:16] <skunkworks> is z the only axis that does this?
[03:34:40] <wholepair> I havent checked the others yet? should I do that first?
[03:34:50] <skunkworks> and is it exactly .3 - and .3 every time you try to move an inch?
[03:35:12] <wholepair> no its not consistent - its different every time.
[03:35:38] <A-L-P-H-A> I can't get ubuntu to get openGL to do hardware acceleration. :(
[03:35:50] <A-L-P-H-A> 2nd get=use
[03:36:18] <wholepair> im just useing a tapemeasure to get a feel for if the macine is working properly
[03:36:43] <skunkworks> have you run this machine before with other software or is this the first time it has moved?
[03:37:02] <skunkworks> what kind of hardware - dives - motors?
[03:37:24] <wholepair> I have run it with TurboCNC - and it was very accurate and I even cut some parts with it when TurboCNC had control of it.
[03:38:52] <cradek> sounds like your velocity or acceleration is wrong
[03:39:14] <wholepair> Hardware = Cambel breakout board, 3 Gecko320's, DC servo's with encoders. Gecko320's drive the DCservo's based on step and direction signeals from the parrallel port that are isolated through the breakout board.
[03:39:27] <cradek> if you jog slowly does it maintain position?
[03:39:27] <wholepair> signeals
[03:40:02] <wholepair> yes - a slow jog does maintain. hold on letme double check...
[03:44:02] <wholepair> yup - at 2" inches a minute it looks like what it's coordnate readouts are giveing are correct
[03:46:30] <cradek> then your scale is right
[03:46:47] <cradek> I guess you should experiment with velocity and acceleration
[03:48:16] <wholepair> do you know how to use www.pastebin.com?
[03:48:29] <wholepair> what should I change them to?
[03:49:37] <cradek> sure put your ini on pastebin
[03:49:50] <wholepair> ok - doing it
[03:49:58] <cradek> you don't know what max velocity or acceleration you used when it was working right?
[03:52:24] <wholepair> I would have to reboot to TurboCNC and check - here http://pastebin.com/754917
[03:52:39] <cradek> which axis are we working on
[03:53:18] <cradek> 1.2inch/sec is 72ipm, which is pretty fast, did it go that fast?
[03:54:21] <wholepair> actually I would have to change to the hardrive with FreeDos and TurboCNC to do that. we are working on the Z axis. no 72 inches a minute gave me an error
[03:55:40] <wholepair> actually - it seemed like I could go that fast but the coordinate readouts where wrong to what the machine actually did -
[03:57:11] <wholepair> I just tried it - I get a following error when joging at 72 inches a minute
[03:59:35] <wholepair> AT 50 INCHES A MINUTE IT LOOKS OK IN JOG MODE - BUT IN MDI MODE STARTING AT Z0 AND PROGRAMING TO GO TO Z1.0 IS WAY!! OFF
[04:00:45] <cradek> then set your max velocity to .833 which is 50ipm in inch/sec
[04:01:05] <wholepair> OK - DOING
[04:01:12] <cradek> and stop yelling
[04:01:45] <wholepair> SORRY i LIKE TO BE IN CAPS LOCK WHEN TYPEING MDI CODES. sorry :-)
[04:01:53] <cradek> my net connection is only staying up a few minutes at a time now, I might disappear
[04:02:12] <cradek> I need to get the cable company out here again
[04:04:22] <wholepair> I changed line 130 to 0.833 - Im restarting emc and testing again - wait
[04:07:07] <wholepair> yay! that looks much better!
[04:07:27] <cradek> yay, simple problem, simple solution
[04:07:39] <wholepair> mdi is consistant with the coordinate readouts now
[04:07:43] <cradek> you'll probably have to work on the other axes too
[04:08:52] <wholepair> I changed line 130: which was in the trajectory area - doesn't that change it for all axis?
[04:09:28] <cradek> yes I think so
[04:09:40] <cradek> but you should set it in the axis sections too
[04:10:03] <cradek> often you want the traj limit higher than the axis limits because if your axes can move at 50 you can make some moves faster than 50 (diagonal ones)
[04:11:19] <wholepair> ok - one thing, if my X and Y are 10000 steps per inch but my z is 5000 per inch, should I change them all to 0.833
[04:12:05] <cradek> that depends on what velocities your machine can handle
[04:12:16] <cradek> you'll have to experiment
[04:12:25] <cradek> it's fine for the different axes to be set differently
[04:15:04] <cradek> I'm off to bed, goodnight
[04:15:14] <wholepair> gnite
[04:15:20] <wholepair> one last question
[04:15:43] <wholepair> is emc2 set to incremental or absolute arcs by default
[04:17:12] <cradek> http://www.isd.mel.nist.gov/personnel/kramer/pubs/RS274NGC_3.web/RS274NGC_33a.html#1002442
[04:17:21] <cradek> here is the documentation for the arc command
[04:17:47] <cradek> you can specify the center by radius or by incremental distance from the arc's start point (ijk)
[04:20:54] <wholepair> thankyou - gnite
[09:14:15] <Lerneaen_Hydra> hi
[11:21:22] <giacus> hello folks
[11:23:09] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/intro_beta_3.avi update, please suggest about it
[11:39:03] <fenn> the code?
[11:43:03] <giacus> yeah, the code
[11:43:11] <giacus> sound bad ?
[11:44:01] <giacus> it would be 12-15 minuts in total
[11:44:18] <giacus> since the origin until today
[11:45:11] <giacus> who know the exactly date matt contacted the nist ?
[11:45:41] <giacus> can't find it around
[11:49:12] <giacus> lunch .. later
[12:10:06] <giacus> fenn: the title for the clip would be "The EMC2 Code"
[12:15:49] <giacus> it would be nice to include some nice machining clip and interview to the developers and protagonists
[12:15:57] <giacus> quite hard to get it ..
[12:16:25] <giacus> I could publish the cinelerra project if anyone can help about it
[12:17:36] <giacus> I think it could take a long time to be done ..
[12:18:00] <giacus> but would be nice :)
[12:33:34] <fenn> giacus: should have said something 3 weeks ago
[12:36:59] <giacus> right, but it wasn't on my mind at that time
[12:37:27] <giacus> now tryng to get all possible resources
[12:38:58] <giacus> another hard thing are the audio comments
[12:39:26] <alex_joni> giacus: tried that file today
[12:39:31] <alex_joni> it wasn't there anymore
[12:39:32] <giacus> for now I'll use subtitles, an audio track could be alway added
[12:39:46] <giacus> hi alex_joni
[12:39:59] <alex_joni> hi .. just came back from lunch
[12:40:35] <giacus> and another thing I'd like to try is to capture few video of google heart zooming from sat to the nist location and others..
[12:41:25] <giacus> dunno if that could be used as Free or any (c) problem occour
[12:41:42] <alex_joni> giacus: is that movie still there?
[12:42:36] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/intro_beta_3.avi
[12:44:03] <alex_joni> hmm.. upgrading from breezy to dapper isn't quite the way to go :)
[12:45:08] <alex_joni> [ 41.903512] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000
[12:45:11] <giacus> until now, I just tried to capture a a google heart zooming on jepler location, isnt bad at all :)
[12:46:10] <giacus> it could be also possible to use few images instead of a entire video as in this flash clip :
[12:46:45] <alex_joni> looks good so far
[12:46:46] <giacus> http://web.tiscali.it/fspaghetti/
[12:46:52] <alex_joni> but you need to work on the text :)
[12:47:02] <giacus> I can't ..
[12:47:12] <alex_joni> ok, can I help then?
[12:47:15] <giacus> need ypur help :D
[12:47:20] <giacus> sure
[12:47:24] <giacus> get a better idea
[12:47:27] <alex_joni> put it in pastebin or somewhere where I can edit
[12:47:36] <giacus> great
[12:48:20] <alex_joni> heh.. my current dapper? actually starts in about 7 seconds or less
[12:48:40] <alex_joni> lol.. it oopses and doesn't load any more sh*t
[12:48:51] <alex_joni> but then the X server comes up, and it basicly works :)
[12:48:59] <fenn> what an annoying website
[12:51:44] <alex_joni> agreed on the website..
[12:53:24] <giacus> http://pastebin.com/755421
[12:53:49] <giacus> what website spaghetti ?
[12:54:35] <giacus> I'm just looking at the idea of zooming from sat, not oher
[12:56:17] <alex_joni> http://pastebin.com/755428
[12:57:08] <giacus> ok, updating cinelerra files ..
[12:57:58] <giacus> I'll show it to you when ready
[12:58:08] <alex_joni> ok
[13:07:38] <giacus> rendering and converting ..
[13:12:05] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/intro_beta_4.avi
[13:12:27] <giacus> have to fix dissolve time for some text yet ..
[13:14:56] <alex_joni> yeah, only a bit..
[13:15:05] <alex_joni> I would start with 'The History' first
[13:15:16] <alex_joni> maybe some stuff about NISt
[13:15:21] <giacus> yeah, of course
[13:15:22] <alex_joni> and research & such
[13:15:56] <giacus> just after a short and impressive intro
[13:16:15] <alex_joni> I meant before The Code
[13:16:28] <giacus> that's would be the title
[13:16:38] <giacus> understood
[13:17:38] <giacus> the sound is quite 'aggressive' in that point
[13:17:49] <alex_joni> yeah.. I know..
[13:17:50] <giacus> a shot of great effect is needed
[13:18:00] <alex_joni> * alex_joni needs to listen to the tune again ;)
[13:18:04] <alex_joni> it's been a while
[13:23:16] <K4ts> hello
[13:23:23] <alex_joni> hi K4ts
[13:23:30] <K4ts> hi alex
[13:26:59] <giacus> K4ts: on my laptop running xp ..
[13:27:07] <giacus> like an horror movie :(
[13:27:30] <giacus> :P
[13:28:40] <alex_joni> giacus: I really meant 'imagine a world' not 'image a world';)
[13:28:58] <giacus> I was doubts about it ..
[13:29:05] <giacus> updating ;)
[13:34:02] <alex_joni> ok, so text intro 00:00 -> 00:00:25
[13:34:38] <alex_joni> some pictures (maybe fast flashing by) examples and all kinds of stuff: 00:25 -> 01:02
[13:35:16] <alex_joni> starting to explain (what is emc2, what can it do (only general ideas)) 01:02 -> 01:38
[13:36:20] <giacus> updated, same url as before
[13:36:31] <alex_joni> some history (NIST & co ) 01:38 -> 02:50
[13:37:12] <giacus> right
[13:37:35] <alex_joni> then the people (pictures from meetings & developers) 02:50 -> 03:57
[13:38:37] <giacus> i'd like to include some shot from linuxcnc website, Axis and others
[13:38:55] <giacus> I can capture it directly from screen
[13:39:28] <giacus> what its really needed is some video machining stuff
[13:39:55] <alex_joni> then the descriptions in more detail 03:57 -> 05:50 (emc2, machine control, example machines, GUI's, remote control, hardware control, hardware abstraction layer, interconection, classicladder, kinematics, scara & puma robots, threading lathe, milling, cutting, etc)
[13:39:59] <giacus> one could be the cradek lathe
[13:40:54] <alex_joni> I have a small video from someone here the other day
[13:40:58] <alex_joni> let me put it somewhere
[13:42:02] <alex_joni> make the 'free' last a bit longer
[13:42:28] <alex_joni> instead of 'The Code' I would put 'The Enhanced Machine Controller v2'
[13:42:50] <giacus> yeah, its ok
[13:43:24] <giacus> I taked the idea about the title from The Linux Code videoclip
[13:43:43] <giacus> the yours seems to be more appropriate
[13:44:32] <skunkworks> alex_joni: looks like the mosfets start to get warm over 4+ amps. (no heatsink yet)
[13:45:29] <giacus> skunkworks: there are no curves on datasheet about it ?
[13:45:34] <skunkworks> I was hoping to close the loop last night but the encoder on the back of my motor did not seem to work correctly. had a lm339 comaritor in it - I am just going to have to draw up a circuit.
[13:45:35] <giacus> could be normal, maybe
[13:45:53] <skunkworks> giacus: home made drive :)
[13:46:06] <giacus> yeah, but not mosfet
[13:46:34] <giacus> looking at the curves of mosfet you should get some clue I guess
[13:46:40] <alex_joni> that's ok
[13:46:43] <skunkworks> right -
[13:47:01] <skunkworks> I am happy with it :)
[13:49:35] <alex_joni> giacus: http://www.robcon.ro/emc/cnc1.avi
[13:50:16] <giacus> ty
[13:54:00] <alex_joni> giacus: which patch did you use for 2.6.15 ?
[13:54:03] <alex_joni> the one from adeos?
[13:55:34] <giacus> 2.6.16
[13:55:41] <giacus> from magma
[13:56:02] <giacus> latest numberd 1.3 I guess
[13:56:08] <giacus> let me check ..
[13:56:45] <d3dib> Hi. I am trying to install EMC on Ubuntu. But it basicly says Could not load 'rtapi'.
[13:57:24] <alex_joni> d3dib: can you describe what you already did?
[13:58:52] <d3dib> I did just everything explained here http://www.linuxcnc.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=21&Itemid=4&lang=en
[13:59:08] <giacus> alex_joni: /usr/src/magma/base/arch/i386/patches/hal-linux-2.6.16-i386-1.3-0
[13:59:23] <giacus> that's what I used
[13:59:33] <alex_joni> d3dib: did you reboot?
[13:59:54] <d3dib> alex_joni, i did reboot with the specific kernel
[14:00:10] <alex_joni> ok, so that works.. and you get that error when you try to start emc2?
[14:00:22] <alex_joni> what version of Ubuntu did you install?
[14:00:36] <alex_joni> * alex_joni hopes it's not 6.06 ..
[14:00:41] <d3dib> yes.. i use ubuntu 6.06
[14:01:05] <alex_joni> argh.. that's only 2 days old ;) our packages are meant primarly for 5.10..
[14:01:10] <alex_joni> ok.. can you issue a command?
[14:01:30] <d3dib> issue a command?
[14:01:53] <alex_joni> open a terminal, and run a command
[14:01:56] <alex_joni> sudo mknod -m 666 /dev/rtai_shm c 10 254
[14:02:04] <d3dib> alex_joni, btw. i have used dapper already 2 months without problems :)
[14:03:13] <d3dib> i ran the command
[14:05:00] <d3dib> /dev/rtai_shm is there.. should i reboot with the magma kernel and try running emc again?
[14:05:50] <alex_joni> you probably will need to run the command just before you run emc
[14:06:03] <alex_joni> it will get lost after rebooting because of udev
[14:06:17] <alex_joni> try to get in here with the kernel booted
[14:08:03] <d3dib> the problem is that i cannot access the network with that kernel
[14:09:53] <d3dib> but i reboot now.. get back later
[14:12:59] <jepler> maybe we should add a strong note of caution that the packages are for breezy, not dapper
[14:13:19] <alex_joni> that would be wise for now
[14:35:52] <alex_joni> d3dib: hello again
[14:36:17] <d3dib> alex_joni, hi again. Thanks for the mknod trick for Ubuntu 6.06. I could launch emc2 succesfully with that
[14:36:35] <alex_joni> that's good to hear.. we need to work on that
[14:36:58] <alex_joni> d3dib: I tried using the breezy kernel on a dapper last night, but it didn't work for me (maybe you were lucky:)
[14:37:29] <d3dib> alex_joni, i could run the kernel without problems
[14:37:42] <alex_joni> ok, maybe I was out of luck :)
[14:38:09] <d3dib> only problem seems to be the missing network connection. or is it meant to be that way?
[14:38:29] <alex_joni> no, what network card?
[14:38:50] <d3dib> i actually have three. 2 of them bonded together.
[14:39:17] <alex_joni> I got it to boot at one point, but very quickly in the boot process I got an oops (kernel oops), and then it jumped over to X, without loading a lot of stuff
[14:39:20] <d3dib> they are of different make. but none appear on the list
[14:39:25] <alex_joni> maybe that's true for you too..
[14:39:54] <alex_joni> did it start up faster then usually? (the list in the beginning with the Ubuntu in the middle of the screen , and messages on the bottom)
[14:39:55] <d3dib> yes, maybe i didnot watch carefully
[14:40:10] <alex_joni> try rebooting to it, and watch 'dmesg'
[14:40:23] <alex_joni> you should see some stuff in there
[14:40:38] <alex_joni> also I noticed that syslog & maybe other services don't get started
[14:40:58] <d3dib> yes, sound device was also missing
[14:41:47] <d3dib> after 2 weeks we will test more that on ubuntu 6.06
[14:44:26] <d3dib> i will report more when we get hands on it with the real stuff
[14:45:02] <d3dib> alex_joni, thank you so far.
[14:45:48] <d3dib> Have to go now. Se you later.
[16:36:06] <alex_joni> * alex_joni yawns
[16:44:27] <alex_joni> and compiles a new kernel while doing that
[17:19:17] <dmessier> hi all
[17:19:48] <alex_joni> hi
[17:20:39] <dmessier> any one used FREMILL at all??
[17:21:04] <dmessier> free mill..
[17:27:24] <alex_joni> hi giacus
[17:29:02] <dmessier> free mill sucked in my catia stl and made code in unde 2 minutes my first try thru
[17:37:42] <giacus> hi
[17:41:48] <alex_joni> any luck with the movie?
[17:45:19] <giacus> was away for a shopping :)
[17:45:35] <giacus> planning to cook fish this evening
[17:45:55] <giacus> well, thinking about the move too
[17:46:35] <dmessier> what movie??
[17:47:18] <giacus> I have to capture some short clip of kernel compiling, rtai running and others
[17:47:50] <giacus> I want to ask if les_w can shot a shot video of his machine running
[17:48:00] <giacus> the mine is too poor :)
[17:48:26] <giacus> I can just shot at the bit cutting, hidding the rest, lol
[17:48:51] <giacus> dmessier: attempting to create a short documentary video about emc
[17:49:16] <giacus> any good idea is welcome :)
[17:50:11] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/intro_beta_4.avi
[17:50:12] <dmessier> get machine video off the nicest machine .. and lots of screen shot stuff...
[17:50:53] <giacus> we could use some public domain clip
[17:51:14] <giacus> but I'd prefer to use our own video
[17:51:48] <dmessier> so far so good.. ; )
[17:51:54] <dmessier> nice intro
[17:52:20] <alex_joni> giacus: how did you record the boot message?
[17:53:12] <giacus> alex_joni: to be onest, I first tried vnc2swf.py
[17:53:34] <giacus> that didint work for libs issues & pymedia
[17:53:47] <giacus> after that , tried istanbul
[17:54:01] <giacus> didint work on my wm, need gnome
[17:54:23] <giacus> at the end, I succesful got it by vmware running linux
[17:54:46] <alex_joni> heh.. sounds like a bit of trouble :)
[17:54:47] <giacus> I actually have debian testing on a virtual machine
[17:55:07] <giacus> I use that to test kernel compilation too ;P
[17:55:37] <giacus> also have a real machine running the 2.6.16 magma, celeron 800
[17:55:54] <giacus> but there can't capture the screen
[17:56:25] <giacus> so, using vmware and converting the video
[17:57:17] <giacus> the problem instad is to capture from google heart ..
[17:57:32] <giacus> I tried with the camera with poor results
[17:58:04] <giacus> the focus going to be bad zooming the map
[17:59:10] <giacus> a realtime screen recorder would be ok, maybe
[17:59:29] <giacus> but google heart eat all the cpu and ram :/
[18:00:01] <dmessier> what's google heart?? im an idiot i guess
[18:00:20] <giacus> its a nice app
[18:00:27] <giacus> google for it
[18:00:46] <giacus> I can show you my house, wait ..
[18:00:56] <alex_joni> dmessier: sounds like google earth
[18:01:07] <dmessier> me too
[18:01:47] <dmessier> i can see the roof of our cottage 400 miles north of me
[18:01:51] <alex_joni> http://www.google.com/heart/heart01.html ??
[18:02:16] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/sat1.jpg
[18:02:28] <giacus> my house is in the center of that map
[18:02:47] <giacus> http://www.giacus.org/files/sat2.jpg here with different zoom
[18:02:49] <alex_joni> that's google earth fwiw
[18:03:15] <giacus> I found jepler house :)
[18:03:58] <giacus> I'd like to find the NIST
[18:04:06] <giacus> should not be hard at all
[18:05:34] <giacus> alex_joni: another way could be to manually save any shot and then use them tu build a small clip
[18:05:43] <dmessier> gov agencies and military instalations are black spots on google earth
[18:05:53] <giacus> but .. dozen of jpeg to save :(
[18:05:56] <alex_joni> http://maps.google.com/?ll=45.74039,21.21122&spn=0.001711,0.003626&t=k&om=1 <- this is me ;)
[18:06:41] <giacus> alex_joni: nice
[18:06:55] <wholepair> I have a stupid question -
[18:07:04] <alex_joni> wholepair: shoot
[18:09:04] <wholepair> I was trying to get the hang of Tkemc last night and I cant figure out how to set zeros - where do I set G54 55 56 etc - I right clicked on the readouts and zeroed them after edgefinding, I even ran one program and cut some chips, but at the end of the program(M2) it lost the zeros and I couldnt get them back.
[18:09:35] <wholepair> why did they reset.
[18:10:13] <alex_joni> because you didn't zero the axes
[18:10:18] <alex_joni> you set some offsets
[18:10:27] <alex_joni> there is a Home button on the right
[18:12:06] <jepler> wholepair: in tkemc, the offsets you set by right-clicking the readouts are called "g92 offsets". When you run a g-code program and it ends, the g92 offsets are no longer applied.
[18:12:52] <dmessier> dmessier HATEs g92....
[18:13:39] <dmessier> they are old school
[18:14:01] <wholepair> oh - so a simple fix would be to recall a G92 at the begining of my program. - or - if I call G54 and then use the Home button alex_joni refered to that will put the axis offsets in the workoffset table.
[18:14:28] <jepler> wholepair: you can set g5x offsets in tkemc by choosing Scripts > Set_Coordinates, but I'm not familiar with how to use this screen.
[18:15:12] <wholepair> great - how do you set zeros and run multiple parts?
[18:16:42] <jepler> I don't know. I use AXIS (which sets a g54 offset when you use the "Offset" button) and typically I set it manually for each part I make.
[18:16:46] <dmessier> script . set_coords should work..
[18:18:53] <wholepair> ok, I think your answers will help, I will go out to the shop and learn some more.
[18:19:29] <jepler> come back and ask more questions anytime.
[18:22:38] <dmessier> peein' rain here today
[18:23:06] <dmessier> so no flying takin' place
[18:25:01] <A-L-P-H-A> dmessier... it's monsoon!
[18:25:32] <dmessier> hey.. fun ehhh

[18:26:52] <dmessier> LOL... i left my window open all night... my van is soaked
[18:27:11] <A-L-P-H-A> was it raining last night?
[18:27:16] <A-L-P-H-A> it was pouring around noon

[18:40:43] <A-L-P-H-A> where is that turkey?
[18:51:22] <A-L-P-H-A> dmessier, hear about the terrorists being jailed in Pickering?
[18:51:54] <dmessier> no where??
[18:52:01] <A-L-P-H-A> dmessier, thestar.com
[18:52:08] <A-L-P-H-A> something like 19 people arrested.
[18:52:22] <A-L-P-H-A> 3 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer
[18:53:14] <dmessier> pot growing ring... NOT bombers... is my first guess
[18:53:36] <dmessier> any fuel oil found>??
[18:53:44] <dmessier> diesel
[18:54:55] <dmessier> not GOOD...
[18:58:12] <A-L-P-H-A> nope.
[18:58:26] <A-L-P-H-A> Targets that I can think of... Ottawa, Toronto, Pickering, Darlington.
[19:13:13] <dmessier> P & D scare ME the most...
[19:13:37] <dmessier> i'm in the middle...
[19:38:40] <etla> anyone here want to talk about servodrives ?
[19:38:44] <etla> :)
[19:40:05] <etla> guess not...
[19:40:16] <alex_joni> etla: not really ;)
[19:40:44] <etla> well how about documenting the emcmot and emcio interfaces ? ;)
[19:40:56] <alex_joni> aiee.. not even that ;)
[19:41:12] <Jymmm> etla: Sure your welcome to document them =)
[19:41:44] <etla> yeah...
[20:45:14] <alex_joni> ubuntu.wordpress.com
[20:45:28] <alex_joni> nice video there explaining what ubuntu means
[20:55:20] <giacus> got the rain again !
[20:55:40] <giacus> going out for a drink ;P
[20:55:44] <giacus> brb
[20:55:48] <alex_joni> enjoy
[20:55:56] <giacus> :)
[20:56:07] <alex_joni> btw.. there's a new ubuntu flavour I spotted today.. Xubuntu
[20:56:20] <alex_joni> featuring XFCE4 a lightweight WM
[20:57:13] <giacus> cool :)
[20:57:41] <alex_joni> "sudo apt-get xubuntu-desktop" should convert to it
[21:14:38] <Jymmm> That sounds kinda nice... sitting on the patio of a country villa overlooking the water, with a gnetle breeze blowing
[21:14:49] <Jymmm> sipping a cool drink
[23:03:57] <robin_sz> meep?
[23:04:42] <alex_joni> beew
[23:04:56] <robin_sz> sigh ... just when you think it cant get any worse ...
[23:05:04] <alex_joni> ?
[23:05:16] <robin_sz> you know I do this software thing for the Swiss guys
[23:05:44] <alex_joni> java stuff?
[23:05:56] <robin_sz> we just did a big series of auctions in Washington, yeah, the Java stuff
[23:06:40] <robin_sz> I couldnt go .. so I sent one of my swiss colleagues ... and we have a really big series of auctions in geneva this week
[23:07:48] <robin_sz> well .. the guy who went was really really busy, infact was so overworked hes had some sort of seizure ...
[23:07:49] <alex_joni> so you need to go there?
[23:07:51] <robin_sz> sigh
[23:08:23] <robin_sz> this is bad. bad bad bad.
[23:08:38] <alex_joni> a seizure is always bad
[23:41:23] <robin_sz> bah
[23:41:34] <robin_sz> disconencted off the poxy mobile phoen
[23:42:03] <robin_sz> not only is everyting else going worong, the telephone line and ADSL have fialed :(
[23:43:53] <robin_sz> sigh ...
