[00:43:12] <tomp> hello all
[01:23:09] <A-L-P-H-A> hey
[01:23:37] <A-L-P-H-A> anyone know if there is a way to extend the taskbar in gnome to expand to several monitors?
[01:23:48] <A-L-P-H-A> currently it only shows up in my central monitor.
[01:27:56] <tomp> * tomp is back
[06:49:32] <alex_joni> * alex_joni yawns
[07:02:58] <CIA-8> 03alex_joni 07HEAD * 10emc2/src/emc/canterp/canterp.cc: fix milltaskcanon which uses canterp, to do OPTIONAL_PROGRAM_STOP
[07:09:23] <pier_> LEAVE
[12:00:06] <A-L-P-H-A> I asked yesterday, what irc chat clients do you guys all use?
[12:00:16] <A-L-P-H-A> mirc was causing some lockups I think...
[12:14:38] <A-L-P-H-A> logger_aj: bookmark
[12:14:38] <A-L-P-H-A> See http://81.196.65.201/irc/irc.freenode.net:6667/emc/2006-09-09#T12-14-38
[12:49:31] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: I said I use irssi
[12:49:40] <alex_joni> and I know at least 2 others in here that use it
[12:50:04] <alex_joni> but it's quite different from mirc
[13:00:12] <A-L-P-H-A> oh
[13:00:17] <A-L-P-H-A> I'm looking for something with some scripting
[13:00:26] <alex_joni> I think it does some..
[13:00:36] <alex_joni> but it's text mode only :)
[13:01:05] <A-L-P-H-A> hmpf.
[13:01:26] <A-L-P-H-A> is there anyway to recover from something crashing gnomre/Xorg?
[13:01:34] <A-L-P-H-A> my mouse would work, but everything else locks up.
[13:01:41] <A-L-P-H-A> I tried alt-control-backspace.
[13:01:41] <alex_joni> it does have the advantage that you can run it in a virtual terminal
[13:01:50] <alex_joni> that's it usually
[13:01:55] <A-L-P-H-A> :(
[13:01:57] <A-L-P-H-A> damn.
[13:02:00] <alex_joni> or you can try ctrl-alt-f1 to get a console
[13:02:06] <A-L-P-H-A> nope. that didn't work either
[13:02:21] <alex_joni> then maybe ssh in from another machine and reboot it
[13:02:34] <A-L-P-H-A> the mouse was responding.
[13:02:43] <A-L-P-H-A> like reboot? or could I do a kill -9?
[13:02:51] <alex_joni> sudo halt
[13:03:01] <alex_joni> reboot
[13:03:04] <alex_joni> anything :)
[13:03:27] <alex_joni> or /etc/init.d/gdm restart
[13:03:41] <A-L-P-H-A> oh, that one I don't so mind
[13:03:56] <A-L-P-H-A> re-upholstery repair person should be arriving soon...
[13:04:08] <A-L-P-H-A> hopefully at 10am, not at noon... (window was 10 to noon)
[13:04:17] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: any new projects lately?
[13:04:20] <alex_joni> it's 4pm here
[13:04:33] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: a few.. but nothing earth-shaking
[13:05:54] <A-L-P-H-A> cool.
[13:06:00] <A-L-P-H-A> I should really get my mill up and running properly.
[13:06:07] <A-L-P-H-A> oh... alex_joni.
[13:06:34] <A-L-P-H-A> any new proceedures I need to do
[13:06:41] <A-L-P-H-A> to get emc to work with ubuntu 6.06 dapper drake?
[13:06:50] <A-L-P-H-A> I remember you saying it works now with DD.
[13:09:30] <A-L-P-H-A> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Repository_Updating shouldn't step three say 'remove these entries'
[13:10:07] <alex_joni> no, you want to change them
[13:12:26] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: this is what I'm doing.
[13:12:31] <A-L-P-H-A> format.
[13:12:39] <A-L-P-H-A> clean install of ubuntu 6.06.1
[13:12:44] <A-L-P-H-A> adding EMC
[13:12:54] <A-L-P-H-A> adding EMC's repository to the repo list
[13:12:57] <A-L-P-H-A> installing emc.
[13:13:03] <A-L-P-H-A> anything wrong with that?
[13:13:45] <alex_joni> no
[13:14:05] <alex_joni> if you're using the install script from linuxcnc.org then it's perfectly safe
[13:17:06] <A-L-P-H-A> cool
[13:17:07] <A-L-P-H-A> thanks
[13:17:35] <alex_joni> the instructions are for people who installed earlier
[15:52:27] <pier> Has anyone ever got a CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_SHIFT undeclared error in RTAI make?
[16:03:13] <alex_joni> pier: nope, not me
[16:03:20] <A-L-P-H-A> can anyone tell me how I can go into my terminal without reboot, and when alt-ctrl-backspace doesn't drop me in text mode, but just restarts gnome?
[16:03:37] <A-L-P-H-A> reboot with grub adding 'single' to the end of the boot string
[16:03:41] <A-L-P-H-A> I know that method.
[16:03:53] <alex_joni> ctrl-alt-backspace is supposed to restart gnome
[16:03:58] <A-L-P-H-A> oh.
[16:04:00] <alex_joni> catr-alt-f1 should get you text mode
[16:04:12] <alex_joni> actually the x-server and gnome
[16:04:12] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: but then gnome is still running in another session.
[16:04:19] <A-L-P-H-A> trying to upgrade my nvidia drivers.
[16:04:27] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: then from the text consoler use: init 3
[16:04:28] <A-L-P-H-A> as I think it's that that is causing my lockups.
[16:04:44] <alex_joni> that will go to runlevel 3 (usually full system without X)
[16:04:56] <alex_joni> some bootmanagers even permit that at boot time
[16:05:02] <A-L-P-H-A> and to revert back?
[16:05:21] <cradek> sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
[16:07:51] <cradek> if he's on dapper he'll soon find out the nvidia installer puts files in the "wrong" places
[16:09:35] <alex_joni> hi chris
[16:09:40] <cradek> hi
[16:10:27] <cradek> I just got up - it was nice to sleep in.
[16:10:45] <pier> ok thanks alex_joni
[16:10:57] <cradek> I see you have optional stop done?
[16:10:59] <alex_joni> pier: wonder how you got that?
[16:11:03] <alex_joni> cradek: right
[16:11:10] <alex_joni> it even works good I'd say
[16:11:14] <cradek> cool
[16:11:51] <pier> alex_joni: just made a mess with rtai installation
[16:12:00] <alex_joni> custom install?
[16:12:25] <pier> emc2 is now workink perfectly
[16:12:52] <pier> I was trying to track and write down all the passages I made
[16:13:10] <pier> right from the start
[16:13:15] <alex_joni> pier: what system are you on? I forgot...
[16:13:18] <alex_joni> slack?
[16:13:22] <pier> yes
[16:13:27] <alex_joni> right..
[16:13:41] <pier> I must have altered something
[16:13:45] <A-L-P-H-A> that /etc/init.d/gdm stop, locked up my computer
[16:14:00] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: ick
[16:14:04] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: sudo init 3, how do I do anything?
[16:14:31] <pier> killall -9 gdm?
[16:14:42] <pier> too brute?
[16:15:16] <A-L-P-H-A> I'll try that.
[16:15:23] <A-L-P-H-A> from another shell?
[16:15:30] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: you can always boot into recovery mode, and edit /etc/inittab
[16:15:38] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: true
[16:15:40] <alex_joni> I see the dafult runlevel for Ubuntu Dapper is 2
[16:15:47] <alex_joni> default even
[16:16:08] <alex_joni> you could try to change that to 3? maybe google tells you what runlevel doesn't use X
[16:17:20] <alex_joni> hiya Jymmm
[16:17:25] <Jymmm> Hi Alex
[16:17:36] <alex_joni> long time no see
[16:17:52] <Jymmm> Yeah, looking for a home
[16:18:34] <Jymmm> how you doin?
[16:18:59] <alex_joni> swell
[16:23:06] <pier> alex_joni: I was just trying to recompile RTAI. I had already done that with no hitches
[16:23:41] <pier> now I get this error... googling around I bumped into this
[16:24:26] <pier> http://perspex.com/hacks/linux/distros/mandrake/9.0/driver-barfs.html
[16:24:56] <pier> but not shure if that could gelp
[16:39:14] <A-L-P-H-A> man!
[16:39:19] <A-L-P-H-A> this is an effort just to get new drivers installed!
[16:51:15] <A-L-P-H-A> so not having fun
[16:51:16] <A-L-P-H-A> :(
[17:03:58] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: what are you trying to do?
[17:09:32] <A-L-P-H-A> upgrade the nvidia drivers to the newest.
[17:59:37] <Lerneaen_Hydra> 'lo
[18:00:53] <alex_joni> 'lo
[18:01:10] <Lerneaen_Hydra> anything interesting happening?
[18:02:58] <alex_joni> not much :)
[18:07:46] <A-L-P-H-A> I gave up
[18:12:18] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: the nvidia driver won't work with the RT kernel anyways
[18:12:43] <A-L-P-H-A> that's not a big deal... this is my workstation, not my emc machine
[18:13:10] <alex_joni> oh.. then it should work
[18:13:24] <alex_joni> but the nvidia driver is installing some things to the wrong place I heard
[18:13:29] <alex_joni> although I never tried it
[18:13:50] <A-L-P-H-A> well...this is a major pain in the ass... there are non-stability issues.
[18:15:43] <A-L-P-H-A> I'm running a KT600...
[18:15:47] <A-L-P-H-A> and it's not a support AGP chipset
[18:15:52] <A-L-P-H-A> fack! :(
[18:29:01] <alex_joni> A-L-P-H-A: the people in #ubuntu are always pretty helpfull
[18:31:29] <A-L-P-H-A> I'll try them later
[18:31:38] <A-L-P-H-A> meanwhile... I'm going to walk away from the computer.
[18:31:43] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: thanks for the input though
[18:48:04] <alex_joni> quiet day today
[18:48:27] <Lerneaen_Hydra> indeed
[18:48:41] <Lerneaen_Hydra> (says he who joined under an hour ago)
[20:22:40] <davidf> Hi
[20:23:39] <alex_joni> hi
[20:24:15] <davidf> Hi alex_joni
[20:25:14] <davidf> Hey can I make a signal generator with the hal and send that to a motor drive, sort og 'in the background', while I also issue standard G-codes?
[20:25:29] <davidf> og=of
[20:25:40] <alex_joni> sure
[20:25:46] <alex_joni> probably
[20:25:49] <alex_joni> :)
[20:25:53] <alex_joni> what signal?
[20:26:47] <davidf> I just want a single speed pulse train I can turn on and off to drive my lathe chuck stepper motor
[20:27:15] <alex_joni> absoltely no problem
[20:27:24] <alex_joni> you can even vary speed
[20:27:38] <davidf> Thought I'd use a pulse train on one parport pin, and use spindle on/off anded with it to drive the chuck.
[20:27:49] <alex_joni> no, just one pin
[20:28:02] <alex_joni> spindle-speed -> signal pwm generator -> 1 pin
[20:28:17] <alex_joni> if spindle-speed is 0, pin stays low
[20:28:51] <davidf> ah. of course. I forgot there was a spindle speed g code.
[20:29:01] <davidf> cool!
[20:29:04] <alex_joni> Sxxx M3 or M4
[20:29:10] <alex_joni> for direction
[20:29:19] <davidf> thanks. I'll read up on it.
[20:30:13] <alex_joni> np
[20:30:26] <davidf> I got the lathe working, and a G code program that is producing nice parts, way faster than I could do by hand, & better. EMC rocks.
[20:30:42] <alex_joni> cool
[20:31:11] <davidf> Got any new robot friends? :)
[20:32:44] <davidf> Back to work on that, Bye, thanks-
[20:39:36] <giacus> hellooo
[20:40:29] <alex_joni> davidf: few
[20:40:33] <alex_joni> hello giacus
[20:44:48] <giacus> hi alex!
[20:44:50] <giacus> :D
[20:48:35] <giacus> whats up ?
[20:49:06] <giacus> I'm ready to work, again :(
[20:49:46] <Lerneaen_Hydra> 'night
[20:50:00] <giacus> night Lerneaen_Hydra!
[20:50:01] <giacus> :)
[21:03:21] <Jymmm> Hey Jacky!
[21:03:24] <Jymmm> LTNS
[21:03:50] <Jymmm> giacus where have you been hiding?
[21:06:01] <giacus> hi Jymmm!!
[21:06:18] <giacus> I was fishing :P
[21:08:10] <Jymmm> for two months?
[21:08:39] <giacus> 3 :)
[21:09:48] <Jymmm> lol, how many freezers did you fill?
[21:09:54] <giacus> :s
[21:10:03] <giacus> got no luck .. but
[21:10:21] <Jymmm> no luck for three months?! Man, you suck at fishing! LOL
[21:10:26] <giacus> :((
[21:10:33] <giacus> yes, not much
[21:10:36] <giacus> sigh
[21:10:48] <giacus> but the sea was cool
[21:10:58] <giacus> no fish around :/
[21:12:04] <Jymmm> giacus were you getting paid to fish?
[21:12:18] <Jymmm> like on a commercial fishing boat.
[21:12:52] <giacus> I just tried to fish from earth
[21:12:57] <giacus> no boat !
[21:14:27] <robin_sz> http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4748292.stm
[21:14:37] <giacus> ciao robin_sz :))
[21:29:33] <robin_sz> is sudan a former fronch colony?
[21:40:51] <giacus> night guys !
[21:40:56] <alex_joni> night all
[21:41:00] <giacus> see you soon :)
[21:41:04] <giacus> night alex_joni
[21:42:35] <alpha> this is bad... 'startx' won't run... leaves me with some crap saying a session if already in use... but this machine just booted.
[21:42:38] <alpha> any ideas?
[21:42:53] <alpha> alpha is now known as A-L-P-H-A
[21:45:26] <A-L-P-H-A> alex_joni: appearantly I've got ircsi installed.
[21:46:59] <A-L-P-H-A> guess I'll figure this out after I come home.
[21:51:59] <A-L-P-H-A> back
[21:52:10] <A-L-P-H-A> and stuck with old nvidia drivers.
[21:52:17] <A-L-P-H-A> but at least X is working again.
[21:52:28] <A-L-P-H-A> man. this is such a pain in the ass
[22:25:17] <davidf> Hi A-L-P-H-A , how goes it?
[22:27:14] <davidf> Question for anybody ? Can two HAL signals be connected with a logical OR in software to one parport pin?
[22:29:56] <davidf> I have the chuck of my lathe driven by a stepper, via the A axis pin. I also sometimes want to drive it with a step signal from the spindle on/off/speed signal.
[22:31:14] <davidf> One way to do this would be to OR the two signals after the parport with a logic chip. But I thought it would be nice to do it in software if possible.
[22:31:39] <davidf> But I could not find anything in the EMC pdf manual about that.
[22:32:07] <jepler> davidf: yes. There's an "or2" component in the realtime module 'blocks'
[22:32:08] <jepler> http://unpy.net/emc2-docs/hal/rtcomps/index.html#SECTION00171000000000000000
[22:32:40] <davidf> great. Thanks jepler
[23:39:44] <robin_sz> meep?
