[01:02:59] <pfred1> Elvis has left the building
[01:03:08] <JT-Shop> LOL
[01:09:22] <elmo40> he left a LONG time ago...
[01:09:59] <skunkworks> wow - that seems like ages ago http://electronicsam.com/images/KandT/conversion/oh_its_a_start.JPG
[01:10:24] <pfred1> skunkworks at least 50 in Internet years
[01:11:09] <skunkworks> http://electronicsam.com/images/KandT/conversion/panel/electricalbox.jpg
[01:11:19] * skunkworks waits for Jymmm to yell at me
[01:11:35] <pfred1> about what?
[01:11:49] <cradek> haha pfred1 is new here
[01:11:52] <skunkworks> no panduit
[01:11:54] <skunkworks> heh
[01:12:04] <skunkworks> or whatever it is called
[01:12:11] <cradek> pfred1: Jymmm famously thinks nobody has neat enough wiring
[01:12:14] <pfred1> cable track?
[01:12:24] <skunkworks> yes
[01:12:49] <pfred1> if the cover goes on its all good
[01:13:54] <skunkworks> here here!
[01:13:59] <skunkworks> hear hear!?
[01:15:14] <Jymmm> skunkworks: spiral-wrap, I'm impressed.
[01:15:32] <skunkworks> that has always been in there...
[01:16:13] <Jymmm> cradek: Including my own =)
[01:25:50] <The_Ball> "if the cover goes on its all good", haha, true that
[01:27:01] <The_Ball> skunkworks, oh wow....
[01:27:23] <JT-Shop> unless it vibrates the good can be short lived
[01:27:44] <The_Ball> skunkworks, we use rapid prototyping development for software at work, looks about the same
[01:28:43] <The_Ball> skunkworks, I forget, you are using the mesa cards?
[01:30:23] <skunkworks> yes - 2 5i20's
[01:32:54] <skunkworks> The_Ball: how are things?
[01:33:38] <The_Ball> good, busy though, just got permanent power to my shed, so no more extension leads
[01:33:58] <The_Ball> 40 meters 16mm2 in conduit a bit of work
[01:34:20] <skunkworks> the mesa stuff is awesome

[01:34:36] -!- joe9 has quit [Quit: leaving]
[01:34:41] <The_Ball> yeah, no argument there, my machine is a bit on the back burner
[01:34:56] -!- Gensor has quit []
[01:35:32] <JT-Shop> I remember the day I rolled up the extension cord to the garage from the house... a wonderful day indeed
[01:35:42] -!- Gensor [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[01:36:26] <The_Ball> I doubt skunkworks had to do that in his "shed" but yes, a great day
[01:37:08] * JT-Shop puts the Gurley's down and goes back to making cheek pieces...
[01:37:17] <skunkworks> the shed was born with 3 phase...
[01:37:31] <skunkworks> boom?
[01:39:06] <The_Ball> boom?
[01:40:04] <skunkworks> JT-Shop: is working on a canon
[01:40:30] <The_Ball> oh cool, don't try that down here (.au) or they will come and pick you up
[01:43:06] <pfred1> I think a guy down the road from me has some sort of an artillary piece either that or a really big black powder gun
[01:43:32] <pfred1> something down that way goes boom every now and again and it is no shotgun
[01:44:21] -!- clytle374 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[01:47:52] -!- clytle374 [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[01:49:13] <clytle374> one should note which terminal one is typing shutdown -h now ;)
[01:52:24] <The_Ball> pfred1, do you see a big smoke cloud?
[01:52:30] <JT-Shop> The_Ball: a 1/2 scale 6 pound civil war cannon... well two of them
[01:52:41] <pfred1> The_Ball it is pretty far away and the woods are pretty thick here
[01:52:43] <JT-Shop> 1 3/4" bore
[01:52:52] <Tom_itx> JT-Shop, so you can duel?
[01:53:12] <pfred1> The_Ball there could be a whole gun battery down the road and you wouldn't know it except for the sound
[01:53:22] <JT-Shop> well the children have 4 cannons and 2 mortars now to play with
[01:53:46] <Tom_itx> heck with paintball
[01:53:58] <pfred1> The_Ball actually until they moved it a few years ago 2 blocks from me they used to hold the world pumpkin chunkin championships
[01:54:00] <JT-Shop> getting close to having the wood parts done for the pair
[01:54:06] <The_Ball> JT-Shop, are you building it to some replica spec?
[01:54:31] <pfred1> The_Ball that would be this http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1189/pict0594.jpg
[01:55:02] <JT-Shop> yea the carriage is 1/2 scale of the #1 carriage of the civil war ant the cannon is 1/2 scale except for the bore it is a tiny bit big so golf balls can be shot
[01:55:12] <The_Ball> pfred1, woha!
[01:55:26] <pfred1> The_Ball yeah not much to do around these parts
[01:55:39] <The_Ball> that would have been soo illegal in both norway and australia
[01:55:48] <pfred1> that used to be 2 country blocks south of me now it is across town
[01:56:02] <JT-Shop> the barrel http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_106_665&products_id=15543
[01:56:15] <pfred1> The_Ball it is on TV these days
[01:56:49] <pfred1> I went last year skipped it this year

[02:13:32] <JT-Shop> other than watching the shots is it kinda boring
[02:13:52] <JT-Shop> looks like you can't get close to anything to see how it is built
[02:15:36] <clytle374> better on tv
[02:22:52] <pfred1> I could go over their houses in the off season the guy with the blue barrel lives around the corner from me most of the rest not too far away either
[02:23:41] <clytle374> unique design http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcNITnbkx_A&NR=1
[02:24:15] -!- joe9 has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
[02:24:35] <pfred1> when I was there I saw the trebuchet world record shot by yankee siege
[02:24:50] <pfred1> that pumpkin was outta there!
[02:28:34] -!- scanf has quit [Quit: fuuuuuu]
[02:28:36] <clytle374> to a US person seems unreal that a government would outlaw machines that throw pumpkins. But NY outlawed sling shots, so why not
[02:39:46] <pfred1> clytle374 in my state if it shoots anyone can have it
[02:40:01] <pfred1> no license no registration no nothing
[02:40:22] -!- cstop [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[02:40:24] <pfred1> well not anyone if you are certifibly insane or an ex con yo ucannot own
[02:40:29] <Tom_itx> deep south?
[02:40:36] <pfred1> not really delaware
[02:40:48] <pfred1> all we have here is concealed carry permit
[02:41:03] <pfred1> other than that you can open carry
[02:41:23] <pfred1> the NRA gives us a B+
[02:41:49] <pfred1> to get an A+ they pretty much have to hand out guns on the street corner to anyone who walks by
[02:42:19] <pfred1> we're not quite there yet
[02:42:46] <pfred1> but yo ucan walk into any walmart put your money down and pick up whatever
[02:43:01] <pfred1> hand guns rifles shotguns
[02:43:39] <pfred1> the general store by me has 50 cal ammunition right at the counter
[02:44:06] <Tom_itx> kinda hard to conceal one of those
[02:44:39] <pfred1> I submitted this picture http://www.city-data.com/picfilesv/picv9337.php
[02:44:51] <pfred1> Wilson's!
[02:45:16] <elmo40> no screening first?
[02:45:25] <pfred1> elmo40 no nothing
[02:45:26] <elmo40> no FBI check on your name and history?
[02:45:28] <elmo40> wow
[02:45:41] <pfred1> this is America
[02:46:00] <pfred1> we all shoot in our own backyards too
[02:46:45] <cstop> "I'll be need'in that gun, for squirrels and such"
[02:46:59] <clytle374> 50 cal black powered = no background check. If it takes a cartridge = background check
[02:47:43] <cstop> actually, I prefer the compressed air style.
[02:48:25] <pfred1> we're so isolated here better to have a few guns
[02:49:00] <clytle374> police are only 1/2 hour away here
[02:49:40] <pfred1> I saw a cop go down my street once I figure he was probably lost
[02:50:12] <jdhNC> no guns at walmarts here anymore
[02:50:30] <pfred1> they don't have much selection but they have them
[02:50:34] -!- Valen has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
[02:50:44] <pfred1> I think they only sell long guns
[02:51:03] <jdhNC> that's all they ever sold here, but they quit 4 or 5 years ago
[02:51:16] <pfred1> last i looked they still have htem here
[02:51:46] <pfred1> not that i shop for guns in walmart but I see them there
[02:52:07] <jdhNC> they have cheap ammo
[02:52:59] <Tom_itx> i drove by the remmington plant a while back but i forget what state it was in now
[02:53:06] <clytle374> Our walmart still carries semi-autos.
[02:54:14] <Tom_itx> i wonder what their handouts are if you take a tour
[02:55:12] <clytle374> I've got 3 ar forgings that I hope to machine someday
[02:56:36] <pfred1> there is some interesting info on the net about gun smithing
[02:59:28] <clytle374> I think it's going to be my first project when I get the mill running
[02:59:53] <clytle374> Might sell better if it's turnkey for ARs ;)
[03:00:11] <jdhNC> can you resell lowers you finish yourself?
[03:00:28] <clytle374> you can't make them with the 'intent' to sell
[03:00:39] <jdhNC> no, but after you get bored, can you resell one?
[03:01:00] <clytle374> I guess... but I don't want to deal with the ATF
[03:01:41] <clytle374> Been thinking of providing 1 on 1 cnc training.. The students project would be a lower
[03:02:29] <clytle374> So I got precise setup and built a 3.2 kernel that works.
[03:02:57] <clytle374> Now the 2.6.38 won't boot. Pukes about the filesystem being readonly
[03:03:22] <clytle374> I can log in, but I can't remount it RW since /dev/sda2 doesn't exist
[03:03:23] <FinboySlick> clytle374: You're missing an ext4 option is my bet.
[03:03:29] <clytle374> nope
[03:03:36] <FinboySlick> Large files.
[03:03:42] <clytle374> got it
[03:04:29] <clytle374> get lots of errors like " mknod blah blah failed file system read only"

[03:06:41] <clytle374> LBDAF [=y]
[03:08:00] <clytle374> I don't need JFS XFS do I?
[03:08:07] <The_Ball> yeah there was a one-way upgrade of one of the features in ext4
[03:08:42] <The_Ball> don't remember the exact version, but I was surprised
[03:10:45] <clytle374> I'll add both and see what happens
[03:11:07] <pfred1> ext4 runs so many processes
[03:11:13] -!- A2Sheds [A2Sheds!~ly@unaffiliated/l84supper] has joined #linuxcnc
[03:11:24] <clytle374> Starting to think I NEED a new computer for this
[03:11:25] <pfred1> may not be the best filesystem for a CNC setup
[03:11:42] <clytle374> well, it's what comes with precise
[03:12:00] <pfred1> any Linux should be able to run ext2
[03:12:03] <clytle374> run ext4 on all my other gentoo boxes with no issues
[03:12:20] <pfred1> you doing cnc on your gentoo boxes?
[03:12:38] <pfred1> cnc isn't exactly a typical desktop applicaiton
[03:12:40] <clytle374> not yet, I doesn't work
[03:12:55] <The_Ball> clytle374, pfred1 is probably referring to realtime demands
[03:13:04] <clytle374> No I was talking about ext4 not needing anything weird on gentoo
[03:13:19] <clytle374> The_Ball, ah, makes sense
[03:13:26] <pfred1> ext4 works but I'm saying it might be better not to use it is all
[03:13:53] <pfred1> or an journaling filesystem
[03:14:05] <pfred1> any even
[03:14:14] <clytle374> Not sure if I missed that on the precise install or what..
[03:15:19] <clytle374> ah, just when you think you're about ready for bed... the cow goes into labor.
[03:15:19] <pfred1> ext2 is the most mature filesystem today it isn't changing so much
[03:15:34] <clytle374> great... all nighter.
[03:15:39] <pfred1> well have fun
[03:15:42] <clytle374> Can you install precise to ext2
[03:16:10] <pfred1> precisely what is precise?
[03:16:25] <clytle374> the latest youbloatedtoo
[03:16:39] <pfred1> it should work
[03:17:07] <pfred1> just hope you don't crash is all
[03:17:52] <pfred1> you may have to do an expert install to select it as an option
[03:18:02] <pfred1> it likely isn't the default
[03:18:02] <clytle374> this won't end up in the machine. it's just a testing box since it became personal
[03:18:22] <clytle374> it's definably not default
[03:19:13] <pfred1> rtai is definetly an added dimension to the puzzle
[03:19:34] <pfred1> best if it is treated as such too
[03:20:12] <clytle374> I'm not convinced it's rtai. I never found a rtai test that failed
[03:20:16] -!- pfred1 has quit [Quit: now its time to say goodbye to all our company]
[03:26:08] <clytle374> well, those options were not the problem.
[03:28:40] <clytle374> It seems to be booting fine. ie mounts root ro at first then about the time init should start I get all the mknod erros

[04:11:01] <cstop> Interesting, I was just reading literature on the Compumotor 2100 Indexers. Even back then, they had encoder "position verification" based on feedback from quadrature encoders. No velocity control, but position holding and motor stall compensation. Pretty neat.

[20:21:48] <archivist> joe9, also depends what you want to make with the machine
[20:22:00] <joe9> archivist: pcb milling, drilling and cutting.
[20:22:08] <joe9> around 10 mils in accuracy
[20:22:13] <cradek> then this machine is pretty useless for you
[20:22:29] <jdhNC> do you have more money or time?
[20:22:30] <cradek> you need better than 10 mils for pcbs. that's about the width of traces.
[20:22:43] <joe9> cradek, yes.
[20:22:56] <cradek> then maybe I don't know what you mean by "10 mils in accuracy"
[20:22:58] <joe9> jdhNC: yes, I do. enough to do a good job, I think.
[20:23:28] <joe9> cradek: I have traces of 15 mils. I need a cnc that can do that.
[20:23:45] -!- isssy has quit [Quit: Bye Bye]
[20:23:52] <joe9> cradek: not sure how that translates to "in accuracy terms"
[20:24:08] <cradek> if your machine cuts +-10mils from the desired location and you try to cut traces of 15 mils width, some will not be there at all, some will be 35 mils wide
[20:24:43] <joe9> cradek: you are correct. sorry about that.
[20:25:08] <cradek> for pcbs, you need zero backlash, high speed spindle, and very little cutting force and rigidity
[20:25:22] <archivist> a rule of thumb is make/measure an order of magnitude better, therefore accuracy should be 1 mil for 10mil
[20:25:24] <joe9> cradek: jdhNC: do you know of any diy tutorials for pcb milling cnc machines?
[20:25:31] <cradek> no
[20:25:45] <joe9> gecko servo's seem good.
[20:25:47] <cradek> but I have milled many circuit boards
[20:26:05] <cradek> gecko's servo drives are step/dir which is a crappy match for linuxcnc, which can do better
[20:26:21] <joe9> cradek: any words of advice?
[20:26:25] <cradek> may as well use steppers - they are MUCH simpler and cheaper for a low power machine
[20:26:34] <cradek> yes, up a few lines :-)
[20:27:01] <joe9> gecko steppers then..
[20:27:02] <jdhNC> http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/cnc/pcb/stepdriver2.jpg
[20:27:12] <jdhNC> ^^^ that looks pretty damned good to me.
[20:27:14] -!- vladimirek has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[20:27:34] <cradek> yes that's an excellent milled pcb, best you can hope for
[20:27:37] <joe9> jdhNC: yes, it looks good.
[20:28:07] <cradek> also http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/cnc/pcb/dscn6119.jpg
[20:28:23] <cradek> soic pads, traces between 0.1" pitch pads
[20:28:28] <jdhNC> what angle bits are you using?
[20:28:35] <cradek> the thinktink ones
[20:28:46] <joe9> cradek: what is the size of those small traces?
[20:28:47] <jdhNC> same one for the rubout parts?
[20:29:01] <cradek> no, I just use a flat endmill for that
[20:29:05] <cradek> 1/16
[20:29:15] <archivist> cradek, has jmk finished his pcb mill yet?
[20:29:22] <cradek> joe9: .008-ish
[20:29:48] <joe9> cradek: that is pretty impressive. .008 mm, I presume.
[20:29:53] <cradek> maybe .012 on the big board
[20:30:29] <joe9> cradek: sorry, 0.008 mil, it appears.
[20:35:04] <joe9> cradek: are there more details (bom, etc) . I am checking this page out. but, would be good to have more details.http://timeguy.com/cradek/cnc
[20:37:31] <cradek> nope
[20:37:45] <joe9> any thoughts on this: http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/29/how-to-build-your-own-cnc-machine-part-1/
[20:39:40] <archivist> looks a bit toy ish
[20:43:25] <joe9> archivist: any better suggestions that can guide me?
[20:43:56] <jdhNC> joe: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/pcb_milling/123650-pcbs_weve_milled.html
[20:44:03] <jdhNC> check the pics and what they used to make them.
[20:44:17] <joe9> jdhNC: thanks.
[21:02:27] <joe9> mikegg: just spoke with the T-tech folks and they say that a QC 5000 is $9000/-. He tells that refurbished systems go for >$9,000/-. That is probably a '0' more, for my purposes.
[21:02:42] <joe9> kinda surprised that they are priced at so much.
[21:02:59] <joe9> when the tiag tools are around $3000'ish.
[21:03:23] <cradek> you can get a vmc for that money
[21:03:46] <Jymmm> I got some 1/4-20 threaded rod and MDF you can have =)
[21:04:16] <jthornton> I paid 5k for my BP Discovery 308 VMC and it ran out of the box
[21:04:17] <archivist> joe9, or build from parts in the scrap box(shed)
[21:04:19] <joe9> Jymmm: for making a pcb milling machine? would love to buy them from you, if they help.
[21:04:36] <jdhNC> sarchasm doesn't carry well.
[21:04:56] <syyl> stil going for pcb milling?
[21:05:04] <joe9> sorry, did not have my "sarcasm detection" cap on..
[21:05:09] <Jymmm> joe9: do you have access to a mill/lathe?
[21:05:09] <jdhNC> joe: you in atlanta?
[21:05:11] <joe9> syyl: that is the plan.
[21:05:28] <syyl> i did it
[21:05:30] <joe9> Jymmm: I have a harborfreight mill, but, that seems pretty useless.
[21:05:32] <syyl> i do it still soemtimes
[21:05:33] <joe9> jdhNC: yes.
[21:05:35] <syyl> my advice
[21:05:43] <joe9> syyl: yes, please. I need advice.
[21:05:47] <syyl> let em be made by a professional pcb maker :)
[21:05:56] <Jymmm> joe9: Maybe some acme rod and make your own anti-backlash nuts

[21:05:59] <jdhNC> I have an extra cnc router frame that is of dubious accuracy, but definitely good for learning
[21:06:20] <Jymmm> jdhNC: define accuracy of it
[21:06:33] <jdhNC> no way to quantify
[21:06:49] <syyl> fast, perfect accuracy, doubleside with vias is no problem, ...
[21:06:51] <Jymmm> guestimate?
[21:07:07] <jdhNC> a few thou
[21:07:13] <joe9> syyl: do you have any details on how you made it? bom?
[21:07:21] <Jymmm> jd +/- ?
[21:07:28] <syyl> took my milling machine, a v-shaped single point cutter
[21:07:32] <syyl> and went for it :P

[21:08:22] <joe9> syyl: what is the size of those thin traces?
[21:08:35] <joe9> syyl: name and design of the milling machine?
[21:08:35] <syyl> a bit smaller than 0,1mm
[21:08:49] <syyl> convert it to imperial measurement yourself ;)
[21:08:52] <joe9> 4 mil, wow, cool.
[21:09:08] <joe9> 1 mm ~ 38 mil.
[21:09:29] <syyl> http://dl.dropbox.com/u/24396704/2012-01-22_17-54-50_793.jpg
[21:09:33] <syyl> thats the machine
[21:09:48] <syyl> no flimsy router :P
[21:11:01] <joe9> i cannot read the machine model/name. What is it?
[21:11:11] <syyl> its a deckel g2 engraver from 1928
[21:11:27] <syyl> retrofittet with ballscrews, steppers, glas scales and emc2
[21:11:48] <joe9> ok, thanks. I need to find something more practical that I can find.
[21:12:03] <syyl> but, as i said, i prefer a professional pcb manufacturer
[21:12:50] <syyl> much better quality of the pcb
