[02:03:06] <Nick001> Hi is there a way of putting a timer in to keep the stop selenoid energized while the spin selinoid de-energizes?
[02:04:08] <Nick001> The turret works except it skips out after the turret is coming down
[02:05:19] <JT-Shop> hmmm
[02:07:03] <Nick001> just need to keep the stop energized for a split second longer

[05:35:51] <ender> anyone have a cnc3020?
[05:39:39] <jts> Good day, I am setting up my first glade vcp and am confused about the file extension. The docs and examples seem to use the file extension .ui but the application for making the ui seems to save with the extension .glade. I am wondering if these file extensions are interchangeable or if there is a distinction.

[06:40:17] <emperordane> anyone toyed with scarakins recently?
[06:50:57] -!- Thetawaves [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[06:51:44] <MattyMatt2> jts .glade is common to all glade files for all gtk progs, so I'm guessing .ui is just a way of signifying it's a vcp file
[06:52:06] <emperordane> eh?
[06:53:51] <psha> MattyMatt2: he's disconnected :(
[06:54:03] <MattyMatt2> oh yeah
[06:54:22] <psha> regarding glade/ui - they are used to distinguish libglade and gtkbuilder formats
[06:54:29] <psha> but really it may be even .docx
[06:54:40] <psha> format is important, extension - not
[06:55:37] <MattyMatt2> ah OK
[06:55:38] -!- gene__ has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
[06:57:24] <MattyMatt2> I'm here to ask if there's any concern that G4 P- is in seconds in emc2 but in milliseconds in RS-274D, is there any desire to change that?
[06:58:28] <MattyMatt2> it's a moot question, as any CAM prog I use will need to have the option to select anyway
[07:00:24] <psha> i guess it will break every program already using this parameter
[07:01:01] <psha> so only way to do is via config file variable that controls second/ms mode

[08:49:32] <cncbasher> raynerd: once all the paths are completed for milling , you select the layer to produce the gcode
[08:50:36] <cncbasher> until the steps are completed , it will not allow gcode to be outputted
[08:51:47] <cncbasher> i'l just start mine up 1 min
[08:54:47] <cncbasher> go to save toolpath , and you should then be able to select the post processor

[11:43:30] <Mjolinor> got my PCB mill running smoothly adn can go from schematic through PCB to gcode all easily
[11:44:26] <Mjolinor> I was thinking about things like name plaques or other items that dont need a lot of Z axis and could do with some imput on which way to do it, there are lots of offerings like freecad andqcad etcetc but which is easiest to learn and has hte funcitonality to do 3d
[11:45:42] <Mjolinor> freecad seems to be a dog but I htink it ismainly because you can't get started to learn it, the tutorial doesn't do what it say sit will when you try to follow it and wihtout at least abasic get you started tutorial you can't learn cad programmes as they are not intuitive they jsut have arbitary ways fo doing things that you ahve to be told
[11:46:14] <Thetawaves> you are right
[11:46:38] <Thetawaves> people here have told me that freecad can be usable once you learn
[11:46:47] <Mjolinor> it seems so
[11:47:04] <Mjolinor> I tried the irc freecad room but got nothign sensible and hte turorial jsut sucks
[11:47:25] <Thetawaves> i was told to watch the freecad videos on youtube
[11:47:48] <Mjolinor> hmm, good idea, I tend not to use you tube because I dont have any speakers :)
[11:48:02] <Mjolinor> ill stick soem on and go lookin gon there
[11:48:21] -!- mhaberler has quit [Quit: mhaberler]
[11:48:35] <Thetawaves> you will need speakers for youtube
[11:49:21] <Mjolinor> its hard to believe that so much effort has gone into freecad and so liittle into the most basic tutorial
[11:49:27] <Mjolinor> http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/free-cad/index.php?title=Basic_modeling_tutorial
[11:49:43] <Mjolinor> I tried following that but instead of getting a solid extrusion I get a thin shell extrusion
[11:50:17] <Mjolinor> no reasons why, no idea how to sotp it , tried removing it and all its configs and reinstalling and I am still stuck with a can rather than a solid when I extrude a circle
[11:50:43] <Mjolinor> so obviously soem defaults soemwhere are wrong but no explanation anywhere as to what
[11:51:35] <Mjolinor> on the right, a "None" button. Click it, and on the left will appear right after "active command": Select Plane Offset, then a text field and a series of buttons.
[11:52:03] <Mjolinor> it tells me to do that but I do not have "active command" writeen anywehre on the screen and so cant select plane offset
[11:52:21] <Mjolinor> its a really simple one page tutorial to get you started adn it jsut fails in so many places
[11:52:26] <Mjolinor> pity really
[11:53:53] <Thetawaves> how old is it?
[11:54:02] <Mjolinor> what?
[11:54:04] <Mjolinor> my version?
[11:54:15] <Mjolinor> its off the current ubuntu feeds, 0.10 I think

[14:25:13] <anonimas1> I am trynig to run my lathe i've loaded a program into it
[14:25:26] <Tom_itx> i just have a pocket reference i kept from one of the okumas
[14:25:42] <anonimas1> however it stops on every line liting the single block button
[14:25:47] <Tom_itx> i was thinking they were fanuc
[14:25:59] <anonimas1> requiring me to press reset and the start button again to get it to the next line
[14:26:34] <Tom_itx> unfortunately it's gonna be a while before i can locate that book. i'm moving my office today
[14:27:15] <pfred1> I hate moving I might as well just invest in some gasoline and a match
[14:27:24] <Tom_itx> it was a pocket reference for an okuma lathe which like i said i think is fanuc
[14:27:26] <anonimas1> is it supposed to do it like that?
[14:27:29] <pfred1> end result is the same
[14:27:44] <anonimas1> (it seems strange) maybe i have some setting error somewhere
[14:27:45] <Tom_itx> anonimas1, not really
[14:28:56] <anonimas1> my gf is rushing to make more parts on the mill(she is making them not me) :) got to run.

[14:30:13] <Tom_itx> anonimas1, ok. gimme some time to dig and find the book
[14:30:35] <pfred1> Tom_itx why are you moving your office?
[14:34:09] <Tom_itx> from one room to the other
[14:34:13] <Tom_itx> in the house
[14:34:32] <pfred1> any particular reason?

[15:41:58] <pfred1> nice shelves
[15:42:18] <pfred1> whats with all the orange crates?
[15:42:41] <mazafaka> orange crates? What do you mean?
[15:42:54] <pfred1> those wood slat boxes aren't orange crates?
[15:43:33] <mazafaka> spannes and files, and a box of scrap metal used for welding
[15:43:45] <mazafaka> *spanners
[15:44:08] <pfred1> looks like one under your back bench has seen better days
[15:45:14] <pfred1> mazafaka I like woodworking so I make my own wooden boxes http://i.imgur.com/VannV.jpg
[15:46:10] <pfred1> I just got done making a retaining flange for a circular saw I picked up at a flea market last week
[15:46:28] <pfred1> when i bought it I didn't realize it was missing
[15:46:39] <pfred1> the sly dog sold it to me without a blade mounted
[15:47:01] <mazafaka> pfred1: What do you mean. This bike with fenders (at right at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilyagalkin/6952243523/sizes/l/in/photostream/) is modified, it's more powerful than the one at left. It waits for motocross suspension to be installed
[15:47:07] <pfred1> I'd have still bought it even if I knew htough
[15:47:28] <pfred1> mazafaka no your wooden boxes
[15:47:58] <pfred1> about all I know about motorcycles is they're 3 wheels shy of me wanting to operate one
[15:48:29] <mazafaka> pfred1: I created a table for PC on which I was capable to draw on A1 paper format when I was young. I once used drill and grind wheel for angle grinder to cut 20 mm -thick plywood
[15:49:39] <pfred1> I ripped this on my old outfeed setup http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2033/shelfy.jpg
[15:49:49] <mazafaka> pfred1: Suitable rooms in Russia are garages, or whatever built on a private territory, so many people simply lack the space for their art
[15:49:53] <pfred1> that's a big box huh?
[15:50:26] <pfred1> I made 2 http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/508/shelves.jpg
[15:50:53] <pfred1> mazafaka Russa is such a big country too what do you people do with most of it?
[15:51:55] <mazafaka> well, Soviet Union has given us tiny garages. Soviet worker ought to dinner at the dinner room of the plant and buy a tiny garage for his car
[15:52:20] <pfred1> I park my cars out in the yard
[15:52:29] -!- Mjolinor has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[15:52:42] <pfred1> I need a new outbuilding
[15:52:54] <mazafaka> I live in a block of flats, habing a barn and a garage at different places in the town.
[15:53:33] <pfred1> now I work in an attached garage but I'm not too keen on open flames in it being as it is attached to where I live
[15:54:01] <pfred1> if i had a detached outbuilding I'd be more into doing like forging and that sort of work in it
[15:54:25] <pfred1> I do weld a little in my garage though
[15:56:11] <mazafaka> well, I'm lacking money a little for this all. Otherwise, I would repair this all and also buy a cottage (About 15k USD) in the same town in addition to my apartment
[15:57:12] <mazafaka> All must be safe enough, be it welding or wood-working.
[15:57:18] <pfred1> a little bit of it is money mostly it is pretty convenient to work attached to the housel ike if i want to go in and grab a bite to eat or something
[15:57:36] <pfred1> but I am out of room at this point
[15:58:00] <pfred1> I passed up on a couple of upright bandsaws because i don't know where I'd put them
[15:58:25] <mazafaka> But I cycled to the garage at winter (about 10 minutes): http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilyagalkin/6877880229/in/photostream
[15:58:31] <pfred1> I really could use one of those too
[15:58:49] <pfred1> mazafaka now that is dedication!
[15:59:13] <mazafaka> When your shop is far you can not use your time efficiently. E.g. I would like to wash clothes and cook while I think of something related to my work
[15:59:13] <pfred1> it has been so mild this winter we barely got a dusting of snow this year
[15:59:37] <mazafaka> we also
[15:59:48] <mazafaka> it's super warm in this winter.
[15:59:54] <pfred1> mazafaka this was 2 years ago http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3994/shoveled.jpg
[15:59:58] <mazafaka> it's already a spring here
[16:00:04] <pfred1> I shoveled all of that by hand
[16:00:31] <pfred1> that isn't even all of my driveway
[16:00:40] <pfred1> there is more to the left out of frame
[16:00:50] <mazafaka> our cottages use to have 20x30 meters gardens.
[16:00:58] <pfred1> I have a garden
[16:01:23] <pfred1> http://i.imgur.com/HzYVU.jpg
[16:01:25] <mazafaka> i wouldn't build something casting shadows
[16:02:07] <pfred1> I put this into my garden last year http://i.imgur.com/MdPJ9.jpg
[16:03:11] <pfred1> http://i.imgur.com/lt6hi.jpg
[16:03:21] <mazafaka> Nice, but try to keep it virgin, just take away some tall and nasty grass
[16:04:00] <pfred1> someday I want to set it up to have an endless waterfall stream or something
[16:04:30] <pfred1> but this is just my first year out with the pond i figure it'll grow over time
[16:04:50] <mazafaka> When I will have bought a car I think I will consider buying a cottage. it's just some building on a territory of 20 by 30 meters, or more
[16:05:31] <pfred1> this is my house http://i.imgur.com/leC6i.jpg
[16:05:38] <pfred1> with my garage
[16:05:50] <mazafaka> pretty big garage...
[16:06:00] <pfred1> it is 20x20 feet
[16:06:03] <mazafaka> Do you work in the garage?
[16:06:08] <pfred1> not sure what that is in metric
[16:06:10] <pfred1> yes
[16:06:53] <mazafaka> My garage's door are very low. I will have to disassemble the soft top of my SUV to park it in the garage.
[16:07:08] <mazafaka> one foot = 0.3 meter
[16:07:08] <pfred1> this is sort of old but what my garage used to look like http://www.instructables.com/id/My-Mixed-Media-Garage/
[16:07:33] <pfred1> parts of it look the same i guess but I'm always upgrading
[16:07:51] <mazafaka> What if you regroup the tools used?
[16:08:06] <pfred1> they're pretty rationaly laid out now
[16:08:31] <pfred1> like I have my welding corner next to my metal working area then the other side is for woodworking
[16:09:04] <pfred1> oh and i have a corner for doing electronics too http://www.instructables.com/id/Pauls-Electronics-Pit/
[16:09:28] <mazafaka> But I plan to have a motorcycle, motorcycle with sidecar, and 3.8x1.9 meters SUV - all on the territory of 3.6x5.6 meters.
[16:09:35] <pfred1> but i had to cut back on that I'm using half of that desk for my CNC machine now
[16:11:22] <mazafaka> cottages offer a lot to its owners... I would keep all the vehicles utside but protect them from rain and snow.
[16:12:06] <pfred1> yeah i leave my cars and trucks outside
[16:12:30] <jdhnc> my wife parks in the garage. Huge waste of space having to leave room for a car.
[16:12:31] <mazafaka> But we only can think of buying a car this year, and some repairs in our apartment... Then we can take a loan...
[16:12:39] <pfred1> man i need batteries for my camera
[16:13:07] <pfred1> I don't have any pictures of my new saw
[16:13:24] <pfred1> I got it with a case and everything
[16:13:35] <mazafaka> tell her she's 'obolete' or something. Imagine a 'Texas husband' out of yourself, jthornton, drink some alcohol before it to be brave enough!
[16:13:37] <mazafaka> :)
[16:13:45] <mazafaka> *obsolete
[16:14:48] <pfred1> ah booze being liquid courage reminds me of the movie I watched last night barfly
[16:15:23] <pfred1> jdhnc cari n garage is great excuse to build a dedicated outbuilding
[16:16:02] <pfred1> when I do I'm going at least 20x60
[16:16:14] <pfred1> skip this running out of room noise
[16:16:24] <mazafaka> Wouldn't dedicated outbuilding be too pricey?
[16:16:47] <mazafaka> pfred1: but good for keeping the noise inside
[16:16:53] <pfred1> maybe concrete is awfull expensive anymore
[16:17:16] <pfred1> but my property is all sand so I'm wondering if i coudn't just make my own
[16:17:40] <pfred1> I could dig a big pit in the back where i never og anyways
[16:17:41] <mazafaka> In summer, all the noise and dust from paint is still in my garage. Then it's mixed with dirt and some wood chips and gets utilised
[16:18:08] <pfred1> mazafaka this is part of my back yard http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/8292/p2200017.jpg
[16:19:52] <pfred1> mazafaka my garage I'm in now has a high ceiling and I've noticed with a high ceiling dust doesn't travel as far
[16:20:02] <pfred1> its strange
[16:20:18] <pfred1> it goes up then pretty much comes right back down
[16:20:42] -!- deuplonicus [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[16:20:49] <pfred1> my old garage had a much lower ceiling and the dust did go everywhere in it
[16:21:03] <deuplonicus> Hi guys! I'm a new LinuxCNC user!
[16:21:15] <pfred1> deuplonicus good stuff huh?
[16:21:26] <archivist> make stuph then
[16:21:44] <deuplonicus> I think so, so far I've only set the basics, I am finishing wiring the Joes hybrid R&P we made today
[16:21:53] <pfred1> archivist I can't go out and get materials until I unload my van
[16:22:13] <deuplonicus> I need to "Break it in" though, any ideas on how to make the machine go back and forth on all axes all day?
[16:23:04] <pfred1> couldn't you code a G Code loop?
[16:23:06] <vin321> are thease any good 3179 - Standalone / Computer Controlled Unipolar Stepper Motor Driver ?
[16:23:36] <pfred1> vin321 Unipolar stepper motors are usually less powerful than bipolar ones
[16:23:50] <mazafaka> pfred1: http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/8292/p2200017.jpg is a virging groung. make it wet with the hose regularly during summer and it will be perfect.
[16:24:05] <pfred1> theoretically being unipolar the drivers are easier to make
[16:24:36] <pfred1> mazafaka yeah in the summer i have it all cleaned up just a field of grass then
[16:24:55] <pfred1> I even chopped out that whole center mess
[16:24:56] <deuplonicus> pfred1, I suppose I could, the problems lies within me, I've never done gcode before
[16:25:02] <archivist> vin321, bipolar drive is far better
[16:25:17] <mazafaka> pfred1: I would use relatively small workshop, but rearranging the stuff thoroughly. Some tools... they are of not use...
[16:25:20] <pfred1> archivist can be usually is doesn't HAVE to be though
[16:25:40] <vin321> kk ty
[16:25:52] <pfred1> vin321 the real question is what do you plan to do with it
[16:26:16] <archivist> he has the right motors for bipolar iirc
[16:26:19] <vin321> so whats the best driver i can get for under £ 30 in you opinion ?
[16:26:22] <mazafaka> pfred1: Also, good trees and soil full of roots protect from wind and water and soil erosion
[16:26:23] <pfred1> I mean if all you're doing is making mirror stages for a laser
[16:26:53] <vin321> its a router with a gantry
[16:26:55] <deuplonicus> Can anyone suggest the best way for me to learn gcode and loops?
[16:27:00] <pfred1> vin321 what do you want to do with it?
[16:27:20] <archivist> deuplonicus, by doing and looking at some of the samples
[16:27:24] <vin321> wood ally i guess
[16:27:35] <pfred1> vin321 so you want to build a wood router?
[16:27:48] <deuplonicus> are the samples on linuxcnc.org?
[16:28:02] <vin321> i kind have but i smoked my tb bord
[16:28:12] <pfred1> deuplonicus linuxcnc comes with sample files
[16:28:16] <vin321> need to replace it for someing that dont pop
[16:28:32] <pfred1> vin321 what input voltage?
[16:29:05] <vin321> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Stepper-Motor-4Nm-Nema23-566oz-1yr-Warranty-cnc-parts-/110824545855?pt=UK_BOI_Industrial_Automation_Control_ET&hash=item19cda85e3f
[16:29:07] <pfred1> the 32 VDC they say those htings will operate at is a bit optimistic
[16:29:10] <vin321> im driving them
[16:29:47] <pfred1> vin321 I did this with a TB6560AHQ driver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHPKaHLzXes
[16:29:47] <vin321> well the higher the better id have thort
[16:31:12] <pfred1> I made it all the way to 1.7 IPS when I changed to eighth micro-stepping too
[16:31:26] <pfred1> which is 102 IPM
[16:31:59] <pfred1> but i run at only 24VDC
[16:32:23] <vin321> i got the TB6560AHQ bord runing pritty well b4 poping it
[16:32:50] <pfred1> so what caused the failure? can it be avoided?
[16:32:59] <pfred1> the TB6560 ICs are cheap to replace
[16:33:21] <pfred1> cheaper then buying new drivers
[16:33:23] <vin321> i have 5 spear about here somne where
[16:33:53] <vin321> but allkindsa stuff smoked
[16:34:03] <vin321> smelt like some caps went
[16:34:10] <pfred1> oh so more than the driver ICs burnt up on you?
[16:34:24] <pfred1> what are you using as a power supply?
[16:34:26] <vin321> some of the other is'd smonked to
[16:35:03] <deuplonicus> pfred1 thanks I wasnt aware there were samples on linuxcnc
[16:35:15] <vin321> i was useing a pc psu +12 to -12
[16:35:16] <pfred1> deuplonicus there are samples in linuxCNC
[16:35:24] <pfred1> deuplonicus like they just come with it
[16:35:29] <vin321> that woukded ok for a while them died
[16:35:36] <deuplonicus> sweet, glad to know
[16:35:52] <pfred1> like go file open in axis and navigate to the samples directory
[16:35:54] <deuplonicus> I don't have my machine in front of me, but I will be on it later today
[16:36:17] <deuplonicus> thanks! I didn't know until just a bit ago this chat existed, tons of help already!
[16:36:22] <pfred1> also in the scripts there are g code generators too
[16:36:38] <deuplonicus> nice!
[16:36:42] <pfred1> that can make you g code if you feed it text or an image
[16:36:44] <vin321> so i got my e bike battrys out & charger 48 v & taped off 36 v from the batttrys
[16:37:06] <pfred1> yes 36 and 48V are too high for a TB6550 to handle
[16:37:14] <vin321> it worked but sonded crap so i changed it back to 24 & it poped
[16:37:29] <vin321> well it was 36
[16:37:45] <pfred1> I think you're gong to have to address your power supply before yo ucan expect to make real progress
[16:37:50] <vin321> the 48 was throw 4 battrys i used 3
[16:38:00] <vin321> ra
[16:38:02] <vin321> ya
[16:38:18] <pfred1> tb6560s can't evne handle the 32V that is claimed due to back emp issues
[16:38:25] <pfred1> emf even
[16:38:27] <pfred1> not emp
[16:38:40] <pfred1> emp is after they blow :)
[16:38:54] <deuplonicus> haha
[16:39:06] <pfred1> they go up like little nukes
[16:39:17] <pfred1> but if you feed them right they work OK
[16:39:58] <pfred1> vin321 I made my own drivers http://www.instructables.com/id/TB6560-Microstepping-Bipolar-Chopper-Stepper-Motor/
[16:40:06] <pfred1> but I don't reccommend anyone else to do it
[16:40:59] <deuplonicus> haha, why not?
[16:41:10] <pfred1> without a good power supply any stepper driver isn't going to work like it should
[16:41:22] <pfred1> because it is a lot of work and you can buy them for so cheap
[16:41:45] <deuplonicus> true, I only make PCBs when it is absolutely necessary
[16:41:53] <pfred1> your power supply is your foundation your whole system runs off but it is one of the most overlooked components
[16:42:09] <mazafaka> jthornton: speaking of trikes and sidecars, would you buy e.g. Zero S aor Brammo's electric motorcycles?
[16:42:26] <pfred1> this is the power supply I built http://www.instructables.com/id/300-Watt-Linear-Power-Supply/
[16:42:38] <pfred1> more than is needed but doesn't hurt to have
[16:43:49] <pfred1> some of them surplus switching power supplies you don't know what kind of power they're really putting out
[16:44:25] <pfred1> in CNC what you don't know will hurt you eventually
[16:44:28] -!- skunkKandT [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[16:44:34] <archivist> Coutant Lambda switchers are ok
[16:44:46] <deuplonicus> haha, nice instructables collections
[16:45:00] <deuplonicus> will read more
[16:45:12] <pfred1> deuplonicus well for full disclosure this is another of my articles http://www.instructables.com/id/Parallel-Port-Break-Out-Board-BOB/
[16:45:36] <pfred1> though that circuit appears to have some kind of a bug in it
[16:45:57] <pfred1> because when i don't have it energized but plugged into a port one of the power LEDs glows dimly
[16:46:21] <pfred1> I mean it doens't seem ot hurt anything but the fact that it does it still bugs me
[16:46:39] <pfred1> not enough to have fixed it yet though :)
[16:47:33] <deuplonicus> lol, I know the feeling, magic circuit problems that don't cause problems
[16:47:58] <pfred1> yeah well i haven't used the inputs yet on it so it might in fact have real problems i need to address
[16:48:09] <pfred1> works for running stepper drivers though
[16:48:29] <deuplonicus> hah
[16:49:08] <pfred1> yeah I never did fiddle with the inputs and i know one of them is total horse picky too I didn't feel like throwing another opto on it and had some free gates on the board
[16:49:51] <vin321> i bypassed the opto on my tb b4 i killed it
[16:50:01] <pfred1> so the no follow through speech is applicible with that project as it stands
[16:50:14] <deuplonicus> eh, it happens
[16:50:33] <pfred1> I found if i didn't use optos wiht my motor drivers on the step and direction lines they'd interfre with each other
[16:50:49] <pfred1> I learned that lesson the hard way
[16:51:02] <deuplonicus> ooo
[16:51:24] <archivist> bypassing optos is a good way to kill stuff
[16:51:27] <pfred1> well I was tearing my hair out trying to debug motor drivers when I hooked 2 up
[16:51:58] <vin321> you think good chance my mother bord will need replacesing ?
[16:52:02] <pfred1> archivist it didn't "hurt" anything but just the noise that'd propigate on the lines nothing worked either
[16:52:21] <pfred1> the drives would run really sickly
[16:52:33] <archivist> noise spikes can be very large
[16:52:41] <pfred1> yeah it was out of control
[16:52:49] <pfred1> like junk the lot of it kind of a thing
[16:52:57] <vin321> i only bypaeed the opto on the strp
[16:53:01] <vin321> step*
[16:53:21] <pfred1> one thing i noticed on TB6550s is they need pretty wide step pulse widths
[16:53:23] <vin321> that redused the noise a lot allso
[16:53:26] <pfred1> 5000ns
[16:53:30] <archivist> bypassing any means you connected gnd together
[16:54:36] <pfred1> even though I hate opto delay with a step width like that the opto delay hardly matters anymore
[16:55:32] <archivist> there is little/no delay cause by the opto, more likely your opto driving conditions are wrong
[16:55:50] <pfred1> funny that isn't what I've read everywhere else
[16:56:31] <pfred1> or seen on my oscilloscope for that matter
[16:56:43] <archivist> some dont understand the current needed to fully drive the led in the opto
[16:56:54] <pfred1> don't count me in that group
[16:56:58] <vin321> i couldant say all i know is it nealy fixed the sound & it stoped missing steps or missed so few that i couldant tell
[16:57:02] * pfred1 used 11 ma
[16:57:35] <pfred1> more didn't make it appreciably faster
[16:57:53] <pfred1> I was saturated at that point
[16:58:18] <pfred1> optos are an order of magnitude slower than TTL logic
[16:58:25] <pfred1> just how it is
[16:58:44] <mazafaka> need to reboot to linux
[16:58:47] -!- mazafaka [mazafaka!~mazafaka_@unaffiliated/mazafaka] has parted #linuxcnc
[16:59:22] <pfred1> you're going to take a 10X speed penalty hit going through an opto compared to a TTL gate
[17:00:20] -!- vin321 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[17:00:27] <archivist> rather sweeping statement
[17:01:03] <pfred1> well unless you get some esoteric optos they're out there
[17:01:18] <pfred1> but you ain't buying them for no quarter a package
[17:02:53] <pfred1> I used 2 optos in my circuits some really slow ones then some mid speed onses after I became aware of the issue
[17:03:51] <pfred1> some optos are measures in milliseconds
[17:07:22] -!- vin321 [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[17:07:46] <pfred1> in any event the circuit I designed for my optical isolation has worked out here well enough for me
[17:12:23] <pcw_home> there are fast optos (al though the new transformer/capacitive isolators are better/cheaper now days)
[17:13:02] <pfred1> pcw_home the second optos i bought would be considered fast compared to the first one I got involved with
[17:13:45] <pfred1> but in the world of high speed electronics you could still string together a few and make a nice delay line out of them
[17:14:18] <pcw_home> What I like about the new isolators is that they dont have drive related assymetry in on/off times
[17:14:56] <pfred1> yeah I had to clean up my optputs using schmidtt triggers
[17:15:24] <pfred1> the signals coming out of optos aren't exactly square up and down
[17:15:40] <pfred1> more like bumps and humps
[17:16:24] <pcw_home> The new isolators are perfect in that respect, the disadvantage of the new isolators is tha they require power on both sides
[17:16:32] <pfred1> I used 7414s worksed liek a charm
[17:17:00] <pfred1> well my opto circuits needed power on both sides you have an LED and a photo transistor nothing passive there
[17:18:41] <pcw_home> But optos still suffer from the driver related assymetry (drive them harder and the turn on time gets faster but the turn off gets longer)
[17:18:43] <pcw_home> so if you want the to not cause a lot of distortion you have to tweak the drive (and they are wildly different from opto to topto)
[17:19:54] <pcw_home> So we only use optos where speed is not an issue or whwre there no power available on tje LED side
[17:20:18] -!- ve7it [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[17:20:23] <pcw_home> man my ytping is disinegrating
[17:20:29] <pfred1> you mean where there is no more power than what it takes to light the LED?
[17:20:44] <pfred1> because that is some power
[17:21:16] <pfred1> one of my optos i think had 20 ma max for the LED
[17:21:24] <pfred1> something crazy
[17:21:54] <pfred1> but like you said go to the top of that and you're getting distortion
[17:22:35] <pcw_home> The newer isolator require a 3.3 or 5V PS on both sides (in addition to the signal)
[17:22:37] <pcw_home> they are more like gates/buffers
[17:23:55] <pcw_home> but they go to 100 Mbit/s and run on 3.3v (most faster logic OPTOs need 5V)
[17:23:59] <pfred1> hey if it is a drop it in and go solution I think it is worth it
[17:25:27] <pfred1> what i ended up doing was using the opto then feeding its output into a buffer gate just to clean it up
[17:25:55] <pfred1> so these new isolators sound easier to use to me
[17:27:29] <pfred1> why i had to use the optos was because of inductive noise made by my stepper motors in the drives
[17:27:39] -!- ktchk [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[17:27:59] <pfred1> I guess the drives themselves being PWM aggrivated it I don't know
[17:28:33] <pfred1> all I know is when I tried to run 2 drives they'd interfere with each other so badly neither would run right
[17:28:50] <pfred1> optos on the step and direction lines cleaned it right up though
[17:29:53] <pcw_home> Yes its easy to get high frequency current causing ground bumping
[17:30:42] <pfred1> two drivers at once was a big hurdle for me
[17:30:55] <pcw_home> every wire is rubber band at MOSFET switching edge rates
[17:31:14] <pfred1> yeah it was a lot like rubber bands twanging away
[17:31:45] <pfred1> it was sheer chaos
[17:32:16] <pfred1> optos are like putting the crazies into their own separate rubber rooms though
[17:34:00] <pcw_home> Yep. You have VBUS square waves driving into the step motor coils --> frame capacitance
[17:34:03] <pcw_home> so you have essentiallyl unlimited current bumpimg your step driver boards ground around
[17:34:31] <pfred1> yeah as I designed drivers I kept on thinking about ways of soaking noise up

[17:34:53] <pfred1> strategically locating capacitors on the boards
[17:35:10] <pfred1> but I can only manage to sponge so much of it up
[17:35:26] <pcw_home> A common mode choke on each step motor pair will help some
[17:35:36] <pfred1> PWM stepper morot driver circuits are basically noise makers
[17:35:49] <pcw_home> (and also help reduce radiation)
[17:35:59] <fragalot> pfred1: depends on the pwm fequency
[17:36:18] <pfred1> fragalot only in so far as where the noise shows up
[17:36:25] <pcw_home> its not the frequency so much as the edge rates
[17:36:26] <fragalot> good point.
[17:36:30] <pfred1> what harmonics it manifests itself as
[17:36:46] <pfred1> you're gonna get noise
[17:37:24] <pfred1> weren't the original radios basically coils with spark gaps?
[17:38:24] -!- ktchk [[email protected]] has parted #linuxcnc
[17:39:11] <pcw_home> yes spark gaps and coherers
[17:39:13] <pcw_home> When a MOSFET turns on into the step motor winding capacitance there is nothing to limit the current except the wiring inductance
[17:39:15] <pcw_home> (which is why the common mode choke help so much)
[17:39:26] <pfred1> much as I'm into electronics my interest never went towards radio much
[17:40:18] <pfred1> it is a bit fascinating I suppose just never fascinated me much except on the most technical level nothing practical though

[23:24:45] <gene77> Nother Q, when is a globally defined name not globally usable? I have at least 3 while loops, and the inner loops math is not being applied to that var one level up in the ladder.
[23:25:26] <Jymmm> Kind of intense photo http://i41.tinypic.com/oi7jog.jpg
[23:26:55] <gene77> pure bs that kids have to put up with that.
[23:27:15] <Jymmm> s/kids/anyone/
[23:27:41] <gene77> well, maybe, but its the adults that caused that.

[23:28:56] <endercnc> anyone home?
[23:29:07] <Jymmm> well, cause and effect. What caused it, I don't know, that's just the effect
[23:29:16] <archivist> no, all gone to the pub
[23:29:28] <endercnc> mmm beer....
[23:29:37] <Dave911> Mistake .. could be. Or perhaps they found the component not compiling properly and yanked it out with the intention of having the component fixed..
[23:29:57] <Jymmm> gene77: There are some more intense photos if you're interested.
[23:30:07] <endercnc> what do you guys use to compile gcode?
[23:30:36] <archivist> one does not compile gcode
[23:30:57] <endercnc> generate*

[23:31:20] <archivist> serious difference, some use cam some write by hand
[23:31:30] <endercnc> and wouldn't simulating the toolpath based on the gcode be compiling it?
[23:31:40] <archivist> no
[23:31:58] <archivist> it is interpreted
[23:32:24] <deuplonicus> hey guys, I'm setting up my machine on linuxcnc, I have a motor that I need to slave to the other for the gantry. wouldn't that be an XYZA setup? My question is why is A-axis set up in degrees? can I change it?
[23:32:55] <djdelorie> isn't A a lathe-like rotational axis?
[23:33:09] <archivist> a is a rotational axis
[23:33:20] <deuplonicus> well on my machine I have X, Y, Y2, and Z, a CNC router table
[23:33:31] <deuplonicus> do I use the XYZ setup instead?
[23:33:45] <archivist> you can look at the wiki there is/are examples
[23:33:45] <endercnc> are your y motors spliced together?
[23:34:14] <archivist> there is something called gantrykins too
[23:34:23] <deuplonicus> no, using the HobbyCNC board, there is X, Y Z and A (Y2) on the board, each motor has it's own SLA7078 IC
[23:35:15] <archivist> you are still slaving it to the other y look at the wiki examples
[23:35:23] <pcw_home> Jymmm: nice picture you would think that three different peoples with basically the same Abrahamic religion could get along, but No...
[23:36:39] <Jymmm> pcw_home: That one was the most dramatic. There are others (across decades) that are just as intense if you're so inclined
[23:36:56] <deuplonicus> I am looking through exmaples, having trouble knowing what I am looking for
[23:37:38] <gene77> Nother Q, when is a globally defined name not globally usable? I have at least 3 while loops, and the inner loops math on a global var is not being applied to that var one level up in the ladder.

[23:38:19] <endercnc> deuplonicus: it looks to me that you would just wire them both to your y port one in a cw configuration and the other in ccw
[23:38:53] <endercnc> but im not super well versed in these things so dont trust me blindly ^_^
[23:39:02] <gene77> I just checked the docs for parameters, and it could be obtuse
[23:39:16] <archivist> homing is special with a gantry
[23:39:29] <deuplonicus> no endercnc, the driver board I have is designed to have four motors seperately connected
[23:39:52] <Jymmm> gene77: Did you see this one? Indian Laborers... http://i44.tinypic.com/2r6mako.jpg
[23:40:37] <endercnc> hmm idk then ^_^
[23:41:13] <deuplonicus> I need to slave A axis to Y axis, is there a way to do that?
[23:41:29] <archivist> deuplonicus, see gantrykins
[23:41:57] <gene77> i don't see a porta-potty even, good grief!
[23:42:44] <Jymmm> Here is a Georgia State Trooper in riot gear at a KKK protest in a north Georgia city back in the 80s. The Trooper is black. Standing in front of him and touching his shield is a curious little boy dressed in a Klan hood and robe. I have stared at this picture and wondered what must have been going through that Trooper’s mind. Before the Trooper is an innocent child who is being taught to hate him because of the color of his skin. The chi
[23:42:44] <Jymmm> ld doesn’t understand what he is being taught, and at this point he doesn’t seem to care. Like any other child his curiosity takes hold and he wants to explore this new thing that this man is holding probably because he can see his reflection in it and that’s a neat thing and he wants to check it out. In this picture I see innocence mixed with hate, the irony of a black man protecting the right of white people to assemble in protest a
[23:42:45] <Jymmm> gainst him, temperance in the face of ignorance, and hope that racism can be broken because this young boy may remember that a black man smiled at him once and he didn’t seem so bad after all. http://i44.tinypic.com/33mvsxs.jpg
[23:42:54] <Jymmm> oooops sorry about that

[23:44:33] <deuplonicus> what is gantrykins? a kernel?
[23:44:37] <Jymmm> Yes, it is.
[23:44:53] <endercnc> gantrykins − A kinematics module that maps one axis to multiple joints
[23:45:11] <deuplonicus> how do I access it?

[23:49:04] <djdelorie> I once took a close up of a 1-year-old covered in birthday cake. Next day, had to send the camera in for repairs to get the frosting out of the lens mechanism.
[23:49:16] <djdelorie> she was faster than I was...
[23:49:19] <Jymmm> hahahaha
[23:49:40] <Jymmm> http://i54.tinypic.com/14cco4k.jpg
[23:49:42] <endercnc> deuplonicus it might just be me but it sounds alot like making a y harness and squaring up the steppers before hand is a much simpler method lol

[23:52:44] <endercnc> what do you have electronics wise?
[23:54:03] <deuplonicus> a 4 axis stepper motor controller
[23:54:19] <deuplonicus> each axis can only handle the current of one motor
[23:54:46] <endercnc> its the hobbycnc 4 axis pro?
[23:54:52] <deuplonicus> yes
[23:55:05] <endercnc> allright give me a second to look it over
[23:55:29] <deuplonicus> word
[23:57:04] <deuplonicus> there is a hobbycnc selection in the stepconfg wizard
[23:57:20] <endercnc> lol that might make it easier
[23:57:31] <deuplonicus> i'm already using it
[23:57:55] <endercnc> did it work or are you still playing with it?
[23:58:06] <deuplonicus> but that selection isn't part of the "Axis configuration"
[23:58:34] <djdelorie> wire the two inputs to the Y and Y2 drivers in parallel, tell the software you only have one...
[23:58:38] <endercnc> ah i think i know what you can do
[23:59:01] <endercnc> do you have your machine all built?
