Back
[00:00:17] <deuplonicus> yes, only one is connected, and I have the gear rack disconnected anyhow
[00:00:31] <endercnc> oh good okay heres what i would do
[00:00:34] <deuplonicus> rebooting machine....
[00:00:41] <endercnc> in the stepper config gui
[00:01:02] <endercnc> when you get to the page for setting up the pinouts for the parrallel port
[00:01:11] <deuplonicus> uh huh
[00:01:34] <endercnc> make pins 4 and 8 y step and make pins 5 and 9 y dir
[00:01:49] <endercnc> then click the "invert" check box next to pins 5 and 9
[00:01:57] -!- vladimirek has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[00:02:13] <endercnc> hmm just the invert next to 8 sorry
[00:02:42] <Jymmm> gene77: Korean War Kitten http://i43.tinypic.com/w7yl3p.jpg
[00:02:57] <deuplonicus> haha, ok, I'll test tht later without them connected to the rack, testing....
[00:03:35] <endercnc> then set up everything else as if you only had 1 y stepper it should send drivers y and A the same data with the direction of A being opposite of Y
[00:04:01] <deuplonicus> hmmm it doesn't move
[00:04:06] <deuplonicus> lemme check some pin assignments
[00:04:12] <endercnc> neither move?
[00:04:30] <deuplonicus> right
[00:04:33] <endercnc> if neither are moving then it might be another problem
[00:05:19] <endercnc> that setup shouldn't mess with the Y1 stepper working
[00:05:52] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[00:06:07] <deuplonicus> well it works without these mods
[00:06:35] <deuplonicus> hmmmm hold on let me finish something, I didn't finish wiring the other motors in
[00:07:18] <endercnc> that shouldn't effect the Y steppers working
[00:08:30] -!- packrat has quit []
[00:10:01] <deuplonicus> I only had one Y connected
[00:10:18] <endercnc> ah lol that might be why the other didnt work ^_^
[00:12:16] <deuplonicus> well, there's that, and a discrepency in the wiring diagram for the HCNC board, on one picture it shows com, a, A connected to Blue, Black, red. In another spot it says com, a, A connected to Orange, Red, Black
[00:12:34] <deuplonicus> but the other three colors maintain between the two
[00:12:39] <deuplonicus> so I'm like "...."
[00:12:56] <endercnc> lol cant help you there
[00:13:13] <endercnc> would need to see it in person to try and sort out a mess like that hehe
[00:13:59] <endercnc> from the pictures it looks like all the drivers are the same so if you wire the motors to them in the same fashion it should work
[00:14:23] <deuplonicus> oh ok, cool, yea they are all the same
[00:14:46] <endercnc> of course then if you wired them all up wrong they all wont work hehe
[00:17:57] <deuplonicus> well, I had that one working by testing the A axis
[00:18:06] <deuplonicus> the problem was it was all in degree/s
[00:19:09] <endercnc> hmm
[00:19:28] <endercnc> i'v never used a 4th axis with emc2
[00:19:49] <endercnc> so ive never played with degrees lol
[00:20:38] <deuplonicus> well, I was under the impression my second motor on my gantry was in theory a 4th axis, I didn't know I actually had to slave it
[00:22:05] <endercnc> idk im simple with my words lol
[00:22:45] <endercnc> you have 4 motors and 3 axis imo but i could be wrong because people name things oddly some times lol
[00:27:14] -!- cstop [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:29:28] <deuplonicus> alright
[00:29:31] <deuplonicus> finished all my wiring
[00:29:40] <deuplonicus> if nothing is wrong, I shouldn't be doing that again anytime soon
[00:30:04] -!- gene77 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[00:32:13] <endercnc> keep me informed ^_^ i just got my second cnc running today its such a wonderful experiance lol
[00:33:42] <deuplonicus> alrighty!
[00:34:11] <deuplonicus> got the Z moving, one Y (the non slaved one), and for some reason my X isn't working, nor the slaved Y with those changes to the pin configuration
[00:34:50] <endercnc> hmm
[00:35:21] <endercnc> goto the page with the z axis settings, are they the same as the x and y?
[00:38:59] <deuplonicus> well no, the limits and pitch are completely different as they should be
[00:39:03] <deuplonicus> but otherwise yes
[00:39:40] <endercnc> hmm
[00:40:12] <endercnc> the x and y2 dont move at all?
[00:40:16] <deuplonicus> nope
[00:40:27] <endercnc> do they power up? can you turn them by hand when they are on?
[00:40:32] <deuplonicus> hm....
[00:41:44] <deuplonicus> The X-axis spins extremely easy, but the Y2 is not moving, like it is connected
[00:42:08] <endercnc> the x axis wiring might be bad then
[00:42:22] -!- elmo40 [elmo40!~Elmo40@CPE002129acb2d3-CM001bd7a89c28.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:42:26] <endercnc> the y2 hmm
[00:42:27] <deuplonicus> I seeee.... gayyyy
[00:42:59] <deuplonicus> yes the Y2 pin settings could be the culprit, I will double check the logic on the board tomorrow, it's getting cold in my garage at this hour
[00:43:32] <endercnc> lol
[00:43:37] <deuplonicus> and we've been hooking this up all day trying to finish (and hopefully celebrate) but, alas not entirely working tonight
[00:43:49] <endercnc> sorry to hear that
[00:43:58] <endercnc> dont lose hop
[00:44:02] <deuplonicus> hey thanks for the help!you and others here have been invaluable to my saying NO to Mach 3
[00:44:06] <deuplonicus> don
[00:44:19] <deuplonicus> don't worry, we've got tons of hope (we didn't vote obama)
[00:44:22] <endercnc> e i was up till 5 am last night and just got mine working 2 hours ago lol
[00:44:30] <endercnc> LOL
[00:44:32] <deuplonicus> oh lol
[00:44:50] <deuplonicus> alright man, take it easy. signing out
[00:44:50] <endercnc> and it was my second cnc hehe
[00:44:54] <endercnc> see ya

[01:13:07] <hatch789> hey guys anyone online? I'm having problems homing my machine and could use some expert advice on .ini file settings
[01:13:42] <hatch789> with my machine right where it's at right now I want to tell it this is home but it keeps trying to move and giving me a follow error. I have my drives turned off (at my mill) right now to prevent it from moving ATM
[01:13:50] <hatch789> I want this exact spot to be it's home for X & Y
[01:14:12] <alex4nder> so just home it at that point?
[01:14:15] <alex4nder> on X, Y, and Z?
[01:16:12] <hatch789> this is from my .ini file X axis section. I think something in here is trying to move the system whenever I press the home button.

[01:25:12] <emperordane> haha

[01:35:13] <emperordane> <reading>
[01:35:39] <djdelorie> the hazards of writing your own servo control firmware... that all-too-familiar burning smell...
[01:37:02] <pcw_home> Run the drive at really Low VMotor?
[01:37:25] <djdelorie> run the drive into the end of the screw rod, then try REALLY HARD to keep up the rpm...
[01:37:59] <pcw_home> well thats what ferror (or current sensing) is for
[01:38:31] <djdelorie> that's the part I'm writing ;-)
[01:38:52] <djdelorie> I'm driving the motors with an FNB41560 and this is the second time I've let some of the magic smoke out, and THEY STILL WORK
[01:39:00] <djdelorie> tough chips.
[01:40:11] <pcw_home> We managed not to destroy our original IGBT module with our development (but we were running the 360V VBUS at 24V or so when testing)
[01:40:59] <djdelorie> in one of the app notes for it, they talk about liquid cooling them... they can take 450 Vmotor at 15 amps, I'm only giving them 60V at the moment, <1 amp, with a plain heatsink
[01:41:33] * djdelorie adds a TOO_HOT check in the main loop...
[01:42:29] <pcw_home> IGBT modules need a fair amount of cooling as they have high on voltage ~2v
[01:42:31] <pcw_home> so they are reall intended for 240/480 off line operation
[01:43:47] <djdelorie> yeah, the motors I'm using are for 160v (rectified 120 VAC). I've yet to warm *those* up.
[01:44:06] <emperordane> 160v? yowza what are you working on?
[01:44:09] <pcw_home> we finally killed our proto by forgetting to unplug the (120V) desklamp that was our brake-on indicator
[01:44:11] <pcw_home> when we cranked it up to 400V

[01:48:35] <emperordane> my bad, i thought the FNB41560 was something else

[01:54:04] <pcw_home> We had some interesting issues making the current loop not overshoot
[01:54:06] <pcw_home> ideally you would measure the motor inductance(and VBUS) to set the PI loop gain

[02:27:10] <tom3p> gack!
[02:29:30] <pcw_home> I was thinking of autotune at startup but you cannot rely on the measure inductance
[02:34:25] <djdelorie> even so, if you're cutting through variable-density material, doesn't the PI math change depending on load?
[02:35:41] <pcw_home> not the current loop PI
[02:35:58] <djdelorie> oh, right, I'm thinking of the position PI
[02:37:48] <pcw_home> for the velocity or position PID loop you can do some tricks with differen tuning based on velocity (and robots often need to change PID VS position)
[02:37:50] <pcw_home> or use more sophisticated control algorithms

[03:46:41] <Dave911> Convolve ... crane stuff .. very cool. That could be extremely useful for large overhead cranes moving expensive loads - like Aerospace
[03:53:19] <Connor> anyone here us the KL-5056's or KL-6852's ? Trying to get a sense of what the MAJOR difference is, and which one is better choice, if their is one.
[03:55:35] <jdhnc> that crane stuff is pretty cool
[03:57:11] <hatch789> tom3p, thank you that worked like a charm!
[03:58:22] <tom3p> do you understand it? the need for F value, and that G91 makes the XY values irrelevant?
[03:58:55] <jdhnc> I don't :)
[03:59:53] <jdhnc> wonder if the convolve no-sway would work with a long object being carried instead of just the crane block
[04:00:00] <tom3p> 1) it wont execute without a feedrate becasue its an interpolated motion, ok?
[04:00:04] -!- emperordane has quit [Quit: Bye Bye]
[04:00:47] <tom3p> 2) the G91 sex the begin point is X<here> and Y<here> ( oh yeah i ASSumed G17)

[04:02:00] <hatch789> it was awesome
[04:02:12] <hatch789> I changed j to + and it went up from the starting point
[04:02:23] <hatch789> I changed the F for faster feed and I changed the J size.
[04:02:31] <hatch789> so I can now make my circles any way I like pretty much
[04:03:36] <hatch789> I'm just starting to learn all of this stuff and it's amazing

[04:04:02] <hatch789> how do I use mdi to say from where I am move x +1 inch right?
[04:04:12] <hatch789> I keep getting movements of something stupid like .400
[04:04:23] <tom3p> where's JT's circle wizard?

[04:05:22] <hatch789> hmm
[04:05:36] <tom3p> G90 is the "from where i said to measure from" magic word
[04:06:04] <hatch789> I guess I need to say how do I go to a specific point from home
[04:06:17] <hatch789> like x2.0 and y2.0 from home
[04:08:29] <tom3p> http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gcode_main.html#sub:G2,-G3:-Arc
[04:08:44] <jdhnc> connor: max voltage is higher on one. I assume it would allow it to move faster if nothing else.
[04:09:25] <tom3p> 'home' may not be a good word here, call it your 'reference' ( where you measure from ) that position IS 0,0
[04:11:00] <tom3p> so to move to X2Y2 say "G0X2Y2" ( happens at rapid rate)
[04:11:11] <tom3p> or "G1X2Y2F10" happens at 10unitsper minute along a straight line, with both X&Y ending at same time
[04:11:44] <tom3p> again: read http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gcode_main.html
[04:11:48] <hatch789> then how do I re-reference or something to show 0.0 again
[04:11:56] <hatch789> instead of some odd number that I'm on because I jogged here
[04:12:39] <tom3p> to go back? g0x0y0 (or G1X0Y0F10)
[04:14:00] <hatch789> that's doing nothing

[04:15:25] <tom3p> to SET the position... lotsa ways, but G92X0Y0 makes HERE where 0,0 is
[04:16:20] <hatch789> ahhh that worked
[04:16:26] <tom3p> chg to G90 if nothing happens ( say 'move according to where i set 0', when, you want to measure from the ref, say G91 to msr from 'here'
[04:16:39] <hatch789> ok
[04:16:43] <hatch789> yeah I have a lot to learn
[04:16:57] <hatch789> but I need to cut some circles tomorrow before I do anything else
[04:17:08] <hatch789> I need to make a new heater. My shop is freezing

[07:03:26] <Dave911> pcw_home I took a break and looked at this again.. the mesa_7i65 is in the current master but not the 2.5_branch. Master compiles the mesa_7i65 component just fine, but when the same component is put into the 2.5 branch apparently they have tightened up the C compiler / comp error checking in 2.5 branch and it fails to compile for multiple reasons.
[07:06:16] <Dave911> Obviously this is not a good thing. The component is missing a function definition but even when I added that to get rid of that error (using 2.5 branch) the compiler threw multiple errors. In the master those "errors" are ignored apparently.

[16:19:53] <joe9> alex4nder: are you around? have a few quick questions..
[16:20:28] <alex4nder> joe9: I am
[16:20:52] <joe9> i know you bought taig cnc ready and then speced out the stepper motors and the controller.
[16:21:03] <alex4nder> yup
[16:21:10] <joe9> how long did it take you to get the other parts working after you received the taig?
[16:21:38] <alex4nder> like, total work setting up linuxcnc and getting everything rigged up? or wall time?
[16:21:43] <joe9> i think you have a G540, steppers + power supply
[16:21:52] <alex4nder> yah, that's what I have.
[16:22:05] <joe9> total time till you could get a piece out.
[16:22:32] <joe9> from the delivery of taig to getting a piece out, as, I would, if I bought a CNC mill taig.
[16:22:52] <alex4nder> oh, well if you're just cranking, and have all the pieces you need in front of you.. 4 hours?
[16:23:01] <joe9> I am deciding between taig cnc ready vs taig cnc mill. want to see how long it took from the "cnc ready" to "cnc mill"
[16:23:07] <alex4nder> oh
[16:23:10] <joe9> oh, really .that is cool.
[16:23:24] <alex4nder> well I'll say this, doing it from scratch gives you a lot to learn
[16:23:24] <joe9> i was afraid that it might run into a few weeks or months.
[16:23:47] <alex4nder> I killed a bearing by overtorquing one of the nuts that holds the stepper couplers on.
[16:23:57] <joe9> but, buying a "taig cnc ready" is not "doing from scratch". Is it?
[16:23:58] <alex4nder> but I wouldn't have learned about how to disassemble my taig if I hadn't done that.
[16:24:23] <joe9> did you change the screws to ball screws?
[16:24:40] <alex4nder> all a "CNC ready" taig is the added mounting hardware.
[16:24:51] <alex4nder> everything else is up to you.
[16:24:58] <joe9> oh, ok. just the basic mill + mounting hardware.
[16:25:18] <alex4nder> no, I'm not running ballscrews.
[16:25:26] <joe9> did you have to do any machine work to get the mounts lined up oslt.
[16:25:31] <alex4nder> no
[16:25:36] -!- GoSebGo [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[16:25:38] <joe9> or, is it as simple as ordering the correct parts and assembling them.
[16:25:50] <alex4nder> "correct parts"
[16:26:05] <alex4nder> but yah, it's all about assembly.
[16:26:12] <joe9> and, I presume you use emc2 with it and not mach 3.
[16:26:15] <alex4nder> yup
[16:26:34] <joe9> are you kinda sure that you have the same accuracy as a "taig cnc mill"?
[16:26:44] <alex4nder> accuracy? how do you mean?
[16:27:11] <joe9> i keep reading that backlash cause the machine to go wrong after a few hours of work.
[16:27:32] <joe9> just curious, if you noticed anything like that.
[16:27:55] <alex4nder> I've noticed there's backlash, and I've had to compensate for it.
[16:28:00] <joe9> or, do you feel that your machine is in some way inferior to the "taig cnc mill"?
[16:28:00] <alex4nder> but every machine has that to some degree.
[16:28:16] <alex4nder> do you mean a DSLS 3000?
[16:28:46] <joe9> let me find the model number.
[16:29:29] <joe9> http://taigtools.com/cmill.html
[16:29:48] <alex4nder> ah
[16:30:00] <joe9> I am presuming that you bought this: http://taigtools.com/mmill.html
[16:30:58] <joe9> alex4nder: do you mind sharing your bom?
[16:31:32] <joe9> alex4nder: what other accessories did you buy from taig? such as collets/bits/(others, that I have no clue about?).
[16:31:48] <alex4nder> I just bought their package with the included collets and several endmills.
[16:32:04] <joe9> ok, cool. I think I have your package details.
[16:32:10] <alex4nder> you'll also want a 1" and 25mm open ended collet wrenches.
[16:32:54] <joe9> i am thinking of using this to mill pcb's.
[16:33:01] <joe9> just, as a fyi.
[16:33:40] <alex4nder> yah,. you'll ed up fighting backlash and runout doing that, but it sounds like it could be fun.
[16:33:45] <joe9> alex4nder: Would you remember any reasons why you went with a taig, instead of buying a cnc frame (such as sable 2015) and build it yourself?
[16:34:05] <alex4nder> well I wanted to do a lot of metal work.
[16:34:26] <joe9> alex4nder: for "fighting backlash and runout" -- It would be the same issue even if I buy the "Taig cnc mill", correct?
[16:34:30] <alex4nder> yes
[16:34:37] <alex4nder> the adjustments are identical
[16:34:40] <alex4nder> so are the critical parts
[16:34:44] <joe9> ok, cool.
[16:35:01] <alex4nder> joe9: I don't know, what are teh specs on this sable2015 as far as backlash?
[16:35:20] <joe9> alex4nder:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sable-2015-CNC-ROUTER-ENGRAVER-mill-PCBs-engraving-/190636230989?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c62ce094d
[16:36:20] <joe9> alex4nder: from what I can read, I think you made a very wise choice (taig + gecko > taig cnc mill > sherline > X2), atleast for metals.
[16:36:45] <joe9> i am trying to justify why a taig would be better than sable 2015 + Proxxon IB/E.
[16:37:31] <alex4nder> hmm, they don't talk about backlash on this ebay page.. just that it has 'antibacklash nuts'
[16:37:56] <joe9> i plan on replacing those nuts/screws with ball screws, anyway.
[16:38:40] <joe9> at this point, my choices are: 1. your setup., 2. sable 2015 + Proxxon IB/E.
[16:39:05] <joe9> I do not have any other machine. so, I would be scrambling around to make the proxxon mount for the sable frame.
[16:39:12] <alex4nder> yah
[16:39:27] <joe9> I am not sure if there would be more things that I would have to worry about to get the accuracy to match that of the taig's.
[16:39:29] <alex4nder> that's the reason I got the taig delivered with manual handles
[16:39:48] <alex4nder> so I could mill any pieces before I got the CNC working.. turned out I didn't need to.
[16:40:27] <alex4nder> ok, bbl

[17:03:17] <joe9> want to check if anyone has any experience with it?
[17:06:57] <mazafaka> baclash is a backlash, but factual ratio of the axes is important if your work considers many, many passess.
[17:09:37] <mazafaka> Backlashes on manual lathes are huge, but it doesn't cause failures in getting fine tolerances. You always have to compensate the backlash, which is a problem on a horisontal router or a mill. Our mill center vibrates a little when directions along axes (X or Y) are changed - unless the tiny backlash is compensated with a constant move to another side

[18:01:26] <joe9> does anyone have any experiences that concur with this?
[18:01:57] <ssi> WOOOOOOOO
[18:02:07] <joe9> i am thinking of a taig to do 15 mil traces.. just found this note that says it is not possible. not sure how accurate that statement is.
[18:02:24] <cpresser> my opinion: 16mil is possible. but not easy.
[18:02:26] -!- IchGuckLive [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[18:03:03] <joe9> cpresser: I am thinking of the taig to do that for smd ssop chips.
[18:03:23] <cpresser> using some Z-Adjust method helps a lot with tiny pcb features
[18:03:53] <joe9> cpresser: do you think that it is not possible for a noob? unless considerable time and effort is spent to become very good at it?
[18:03:54] <ssi> danimal_laptop: got my machine :D
[18:04:08] <danimal_laptop> nice!
[18:04:12] <danimal_laptop> how?
[18:04:19] <IchGuckLive> joe9: you can do this shouure
[18:04:25] <cpresser> joe9: i dont know what 'taig' is. but you will need to invest a lot of time. that is for sure :)
[18:04:52] <joe9> IchGuckLive: i know you use a sable 2015 frame to do pcb's.
[18:05:14] <joe9> is it hard for a noob to mill pcb's with ssop chips?
[18:05:23] <cpresser> http://phk.freebsd.dk/CncPcb/
[18:05:33] <IchGuckLive> yes the frame is milled on the mashine so it gives me 0.01mm z adjustment
[18:05:34] <joe9> IchGuckLive: i read about the sable table not being level. did you notice that issue?
[18:06:10] <IchGuckLive> that is not to be worried joe9
[18:06:21] <cpresser> as long as you use z-probing :)
[18:06:31] <IchGuckLive> as you go for standard cards you need a fixing for this
[18:06:40] <cpresser> otherwise it is quite an issue for small structures
[18:06:42] <joe9> IchGuckLive: how long did it take you to get the machine to mill pcb's after you receive the sable 2015?
[18:06:59] <joe9> do you have to machine any further parts to get the sable 2015 to work? other than the motor mount?
[18:07:24] <IchGuckLive> i got all parts made bymyself
[18:07:34] <joe9> IchGuckLive: "standard cards" -- what standard cards?
[18:07:51] <joe9> IchGuckLive: i do not have any other machine. I cannot make parts myself.
[18:07:52] <IchGuckLive> i use TB6560 and 23lm c355 astrosys
[18:08:22] <IchGuckLive> standard pcb euro cards are 160x100mm
[18:08:38] <joe9> IchGuckLive: if i cannot make the parts myself, then it is probably a bad idea to go the sable 2015 route.
[18:08:45] <joe9> IchGuckLive: do you agree?
[18:08:45] <IchGuckLive> so i added a self milled fixing that levels the table
[18:09:06] <IchGuckLive> no go for it
[18:09:29] <IchGuckLive> you will shure come into 1mm range
[18:09:39] <IchGuckLive> and the fixing does the rest
[18:09:43] <alex4nder> jdhnc: the taig and sable are in different classes just based on machine rigidity
[18:09:48] <joe9> oh, ok. thanks. that is off of my skill set now. I would love to learn it at some point, but, do not have the skills even to recognise issues, forget about fixing them.
[18:10:10] <joe9> IchGuckLive: 1mm is not good enough, unfortunately, for milling ssop pcb's.
[18:10:32] <joe9> cpresser: thanks for the link. interesting read.
[18:10:36] <IchGuckLive> the fixing needs to be milled to hold the pcb
[18:10:45] -!- elmo40 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[18:10:53] <alex4nder> joe9: I've measured the runout on my taig spindle to be .0004, and my backlash is on the order of .002-.001.5 .. so just do the math basedon that.
[18:11:00] <IchGuckLive> then the pcb is leveld to zero
[18:11:02] <alex4nder> er .0015
[18:11:22] <joe9> alex4nder: did you have any issues with the table not being level?
[18:11:58] <joe9> i like what IchGuckLive is saying about the sable 2015. but, for a noob like me, I think it will make me atleast a week or longer to get the sable 2015 to mill pcb's.
[18:12:12] -!- elmo40 [elmo40!~Elmo40@CPE002129acb2d3-CM001bd7a89c28.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com] has joined #linuxcnc
[18:12:14] <alex4nder> joe9: if I were doing PCBs, I'd do what IchGuckLive said, and then I'd also probably use a vacuum to fixture the PCB, and probe the board for Z compensation.
[18:12:31] <alex4nder> I don't remember what I measured the taig table to be.. but I could see it move on my DTI.
[18:12:48] <joe9> alex4nder: oh, really. you would? that was what I was looking for.
[18:12:52] <cpresser> building a simple vaccum table isnt that difficult.
[18:13:19] -!- isssy [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[18:14:01] <IchGuckLive> most to worry is not the table its the tool holding the full pcb if it is beond 5m in length milling path joe9
[18:14:03] <joe9> cpresser: in the pcb image in that link, the 4 mil traces are pretty good.
[18:14:43] <joe9> IchGuckLive: the pcb's I am doing are 8 cm x 8cm and 10 cm x 10 cm in sizes.
[18:14:55] <cpresser> in my personal experiencen this does not work with a really good fixture, or using z-adjust
[18:15:03] <cpresser> having both gives good results
[18:15:28] <cpresser> ~does not work, until you use a really good fixture...
[18:15:38] <IchGuckLive> in eagle to pcb-gcode you can deside different tools for different mil
[18:15:44] -!- FinboySlick has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[18:16:09] <alex4nder> also is the taig spindle top-speed good enough for the bits you're using?
[18:16:29] <joe9> i think the 10k rpm is good enough.
[18:16:53] <IchGuckLive> joe9: imilled fixers out of a necuron8000 this is then 1mil in zadjust do dont worry about this on your 4mil with
[18:17:05] <joe9> IchGuckLive: this is the bom I have from my earlier conversation with you: http://codepad.org/Lah4hzaC
[18:17:08] <IchGuckLive> joe9: no 40.000 min
[18:17:38] <cpresser> IchGuckLive: just to make sure: 16mil = 16/1000inch, not 16mm :)
[18:18:14] <IchGuckLive> 16mil are in eagle i guess
[18:18:30] <IchGuckLive> so its 0,3mm
[18:18:40] <joe9> IchGuckLive: how long will it take to assemble and get the cnc working, after I receive the sable 2015 and order the correct parts (stepper drivers + psu).
[18:18:44] <IchGuckLive> 10eagle mill is 0,25
[18:19:05] <IchGuckLive> joe9: why not the 3030
[18:19:15] <IchGuckLive> this is ready tuo use
[18:19:29] <IchGuckLive> and has a mutch more precissen
[18:19:42] <joe9> which is the 3030? i would love to get more precision.

[18:36:22] <alex4nder> it's all about application.. don't compare a sable to a taig from an objective viewpoint

[18:37:02] <syyl> at least as a conventional machine...

[18:41:15] <jdhnc> joe9: the perfect machine does not exist. Certainly not in hobbyist prices. There is no given machine that is inherently better than anything similar, they are all tradeoffs.
[18:41:24] <jdhnc> Ich: cutting pcb's with a bridgeport?
[18:41:39] <IchGuckLive> why not
[18:41:46] <alex4nder> not to mention: there's so much more to machining thatn the machine.
[18:41:52] <IchGuckLive> on the kitchen table
[18:42:10] <joe9> jdhnc: i agree it is a tradeoff. i just do not want to spend time/money and realise that the product is not good enough for milling pcb's.
[18:42:23] <IchGuckLive> joe9: at the end it all depends on the price
[18:42:38] <jdhnc> joe9: do you need to mill pcbs?
[18:42:41] <joe9> taig is awesome. it seems easy to get it working (assemble) and it seems to have the accuracy enough for milling pcb's.
[18:42:51] <IchGuckLive> jdhnc: agree
[18:42:54] <joe9> jdhnc: yes, mill pcb'.s
[18:43:04] <jdhnc> joe9: can't you make them via traditional ways, using the interwebbes and cheap chinese board houses?
[18:43:21] <IchGuckLive> joe9: i only mill the prototypes then give it to a pcb maker
[18:43:33] <joe9> mine is the prototypes too.
[18:44:01] <jdhnc> you can proto a lot of boards before you recover the cost of a mill
[18:44:12] <alex4nder> yah
[18:44:28] <IchGuckLive> joe9: jsd and i try to say there are also 1week pcb makers around that will love to do the job
[18:44:48] <alex4nder> what about just building a photo-resist setup, using a cheap mini projector as the light-source?
[18:44:50] <cpresser> or etch the pcb
[18:44:52] <syyl> and you get perfect prototypes...
[18:45:07] <IchGuckLive> mine here carge 15USD for 80x80mm
[18:45:07] <syyl> no worries about the problems with milled pcbs..
[18:45:18] <joe9> IchGuckLive: jdhnc: alex4nder: I definitely need a cnc m/c to mill pcb's. I have thought about fab's and all that. At this point, it is deciding which one for me.
[18:45:28] <cpresser> most of the stuff required for chemical etching can be found in other ppls. junk :)
[18:45:28] <alex4nder> ok

[18:46:01] <IchGuckLive> then its as wee alll said up to you

[18:47:11] <jdhnc> joe9: you will never know what you need to know until you get one and try.
[18:47:12] <joe9> alex4nder's taig is my benchmark machine. I like it. I like IchGuckLive's ideas about cnc 3020 or Proxxon MF 70 or Sable 2015. but, I am a little nervous that I do not have the skills/machinery to make mounts or stuff like that.
[18:47:17] <joe9> and, I will get stuck.

[18:49:18] <djdelorie> I think I spent about $20 on chemicals, plus about $1 per board for supplies.

[19:06:13] <syyl> yeah

[19:16:13] <JT-Shop> nice!
[19:19:31] <joe9> ichgucklive seems to think cnc 3020 is a better fit for my need over the taig. he seems to be a hardcore machinist and his arguments are convincing to me, as a noob.
[19:20:01] <joe9> with the taig, I can probably ping alex4nder and there is also a lot of stuff on the web about it.
[19:20:07] <ssi> JT-Shop: do you have one?
[19:20:25] <JT-Shop> I have a CHNC I
[19:20:26] <joe9> with the cnc 3020, I cannot find much info on the web, other than what the sellers are saying.
[19:20:30] <ssi> nice :D
[19:20:46] <ssi> well you can send me whatever 3/8" tooling you end up with ;)
[19:20:57] <ssi> and I'll exchange it for whatever 1/2" stuff I find
[19:21:28] <jdhnc> joe9: do you want a mill or a PCB router?
[19:21:37] <syyl> any self respecing machinist would run away by the sight of the 3020 ;)
[19:21:57] <joe9> jdhnc: i want something to be able to drill holes (through holes and non-through holes) and make traces on a pcb.
[19:22:16] <jdhnc> what's a non-through hole?
[19:22:21] <joe9> just a slot.
[19:22:43] <syyl> a blind hole?
[19:22:48] <jdhnc> what's your budget, roughly?
[19:22:54] <joe9> not going through the pcb, just a slot on top, almost similar to how the copper is etched out, but circular.
[19:23:02] <joe9> syyl: yes, blind hole.
[19:23:22] <joe9> jdhnc: I can buy the taig cnc mill at 2500/-, if that is what I need to.
[19:23:37] <joe9> but, it is not that I have free money.
[19:23:59] <joe9> it is just that the need outweighs such financial constraints.
[19:24:10] <joe9> jdhnc: does that make sense?
[19:24:24] <joe9> i do not want to spend weeks trying to figure out why the machine is inaccurate
[19:24:34] <joe9> or, trying to find other pars or something like that.
[19:24:50] <ssi> JT-Shop: I have this insane desire to get my hands on a tape punch and run some programs through the original control before I dismantle it
[19:24:52] <jdhnc> a factory taig is probably a good bet for being up and running quickly. It also costs 4x as much
[19:25:31] <joe9> jdhnc: this seems to be a safe bet too: http://www.taigtools.com/2018special2.html
[19:25:57] <joe9> and, add steppers, gecko g540 and psu
[19:26:05] <JT-Shop> ssi: that could be both fun and a time sink :)
[19:26:18] <joe9> jdhnc: alex4nder seems to think around 4 hours'ish.
[19:26:18] <syyl> or chance for a awesome crash? ;)
[19:26:23] <joe9> which I think is reasonable.
[19:26:28] <ssi> JT-Shop: I'm not so much worried about the time... mostly just the money for a punch. There's one on ebay for $300
[19:26:40] <jdhnc> plus cash
[19:26:56] <ssi> JT-Shop: I have all the manuals for the machine and the control... it'll read ASCII tape, 7 hole, and it's just direct G-code to ASCII. Pretty easy conversion
[19:27:38] <ssi> the guy I bought it from was running it that way... had four of them
[19:27:40] <JT-Shop> for $257.88 you could have a 5i25 + 7i77 + cable....
[19:27:58] <ssi> oh it's gonna get mesa'd up in fine style
[19:28:08] <JT-Shop> didn't he give you a sample tape to play with
[19:28:13] <ssi> I jsut want to run it off the paper tape for the sheer joy of it
[19:28:14] <ssi> sadly, no
[19:28:23] <ssi> he was also stingy with tooling
[19:28:31] <ssi> I had to buy every piece of tooling that I wanted from him
[19:29:01] <ssi> and he had no boring bar holders... so I'm gonna have to scour ebay for bar/drill holders
[19:29:08] <ssi> I bought one already off ebay... AHC21

[19:33:09] <ssi> haha nice
[19:33:26] <JT-Shop> does yours have the 1/2 turret?
[19:33:34] <ssi> I have a set of ER16 collets... was thinking about trying to get a 5/8" shank ER16 chuck to put in an AHC21
[19:33:37] <ssi> no it's the 3/8" turret
[19:33:44] <ssi> uses the C and AHC tooling
[19:34:21] <JT-Shop> I got a ER16 and 20 chuck for mine to hold drill bits and taps
[19:34:26] <ssi> also wondering if I can put the HNC to work making its own drill bushings :D

[19:36:41] <ssi> so yea that tool holder that you're using there
[19:36:46] <ssi> is like a CC-15 or something similar?
[19:36:48] <ssi> I need a couple of those
[19:36:51] <ssi> the different lengths
[19:36:54] <JT-Shop> yea
[19:36:56] <ssi> thinking I might make them
[19:36:58] <ssi> cause they're $$$
[19:37:04] <syyl> your fingers that close to the spindle scare me :D
[19:37:15] <syyl> ok, pretty safe with the collet chuck
[19:37:16] <syyl> but..
[19:37:18] <syyl> wha :D
[19:37:30] <JT-Shop> CC14 is the smaller one, CC15 is the longer one
[19:37:37] <ssi> there's actually CC13-16
[19:37:45] <ssi> they're like 2" thru 5"
[19:38:03] <ssi> looks like pretty nice work though
[19:38:07] <JT-Shop> you don't see 13 and 15 often on flea bay
[19:38:20] <ssi> the guy that sold me this machine was making little inconel fuel nozzles for jet engine
[19:38:23] <ssi> among other things
[19:38:28] <ssi> and I was really impressed with the work that it was turning out
[19:38:29] <JT-Shop> it's always a toss up with tooling and material
[19:38:30] <syyl> like the use of the cutoff tool to pull the stock material out
[19:38:48] <JT-Shop> cradek taught me that
[19:38:54] <ssi> yea I've seen his vids doing that
[19:38:56] <ssi> nice trick :D
[19:39:38] <JT-Shop> got to move Z back a bit when you close the collet
[19:40:08] <ssi> have any other vids of making parts?
[19:40:47] <mrsun> hmm, wonder if 0.5 degree angle over 5mm is enough to jam a pipe tight in a hole =)
[19:40:59] <JT-Shop> ssi: no that seems to be it
[19:40:59] <mrsun> (tapered from all directions at 0.5 degrees to center the pipe in the hole
[19:42:49] <mrsun> or 0.13mm thats the endmill i got on hand atm
[19:43:28] <mrsun> feels like it would be to much if the hole is exactly like the pipe in dimensions, tho i doubt steel pipe is extremly accurate in its dimensions =)
[19:49:14] <joe9> alex4nder: what steppers did you use?
[19:50:32] <alex4nder> 166oz vextas
[19:51:21] <alex4nder> at 48 volts
[19:51:24] <ssi> JT-Shop: you been pretty happy with the accuracy you get out of it?
[19:51:51] <joe9> alex4nder: what about the power supply? did you buy it? or, make it yourself?
[19:52:05] <joe9> i know you use 48 volt psu.
[19:52:19] <JT-Shop> yea, mine was in good shape when I got it except for the belts on the servos

[19:54:04] -!- syyl_ws [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[19:55:04] <joe9> alex4nder: is there any reason you went with steppers over servos?
[19:55:32] <alex4nder> joe9: because servos bump the price up, add complexity, and I had enough to learn besides configuring stepper drivers.
[19:55:35] <alex4nder> er servo drivers
[19:59:22] <joe9> alex4nder: there seems to be a bunch of meanwell psu's. do you happen to remember the model no oslt?
[19:59:50] <alex4nder> no
[20:00:01] <joe9> how many outputs?
[20:00:36] <alex4nder> the one I have has a header, but it's mainly just AC input, 48V output, and ground.
[20:01:04] <joe9> oh, just one output and all the motors are connected to the same output?
[20:01:28] <ssi> I can't wait til my forklift is delivered :D :D :D
[20:01:32] <ssi> I feel like a kid on christmas
[20:02:21] <joe9> alex4nder: i assume 3 steppers (166oz vexta motors), correct?
[20:03:28] <alex4nder> yup
[20:03:54] <alex4nder> joe9: the power supply hooks to the driver, the driver hooks to the motor.
[20:04:13] <joe9> oh, gotcha. so, one output is good enough from the psu.
[20:04:46] <joe9> thanks.
[20:05:26] <joe9> alex4nder: do you like the vise that came with the package?

[21:37:01] <raynerd> I see. Well I`ve got all the parts to make my spindle
[21:37:12] <Mjolinor> same motor?
[21:38:03] <Mjolinor> have you niticed there are soem of the Teps on ebay?
[21:38:09] <Mjolinor> guy has 6 of them or soemthign like that
[21:38:13] <raynerd> no, I`ve gone for a slightly different idea. I`ve got for a bigger motor with an 8mm shaft and then ordered (not arrived yet so can`t start!) an 8mm straight shank er16 chuck. Going to replace the motor shaft with that and add a bearing house on the top.
[21:38:26] <raynerd> wow,...not noticed them
[21:38:37] <Mjolinor> motor off ebay?
[21:39:07] <raynerd> actually it wasn`t... one second
[21:40:35] <raynerd> http://www.giantcod.co.uk/xyh5045-890kv-outrunnner-p-404603.html
[21:41:30] <Mjolinor> what are you going to power that with?
[21:41:54] <Mjolinor> you will need a car battery or deep pockets for that current
[21:42:04] <raynerd> lol.. a PC atx supply...or was going to!
[21:42:24] <Mjolinor> wont do it
[21:42:50] <raynerd> well, that is what I thought, but I`ve been chatting to a chap who has made a set of 4 or 5 spindles and posted them on mycncuk and he said he has used atx supplies.
[21:42:57] <Mjolinor> you need 30 amps at 22 volts to get full power off it
[21:43:28] <raynerd> he said that 12v gets him to a more than usable speed??
[21:43:28] <Mjolinor> ok, well Ill let you spend the money then gladly receive a report on how well it works :)
[21:43:37] <raynerd> :P too late now :(
[21:43:45] <Mjolinor> it will be fine I am sure
[21:44:12] <raynerd> haha... knowing your workshop, I in no way doubt your advice!
[21:44:16] <Mjolinor> but it wont be anywhere near max power though that is probaly a good thing anyway
[21:45:00] <Mjolinor> I think also you may need to add a fan, my motor has a fan type casting so it shifts a lot of air through the motor but that one doesnt look as though it has
[21:45:05] <raynerd> http://www.mycncuk.com/forums/showthread.php/3793-Diy-brushless-spindle
[21:45:17] <Mjolinor> so without the forward movement of the aeroplane it may get hot
[21:46:14] <alex4nder> what's the coupling between the motor and the spindle?
[21:46:27] <alex4nder> "hard"?
[21:47:05] <ssi> I built an ER16 spindle driven by a brushless outrunner
[21:47:12] <Mjolinor> i wonder if the guy loses any power dismantling the motor, I was concerned about that and didnt do it because I figured that the motor being disassembled would reduce the pwoer in the magnets, the stator acting as a keep as long as it is assembled but remove it and hte magnets go stupiod and lose a lot of magnetism
[21:47:16] <ssi> it gets hot
[21:47:31] <Mjolinor> mine isn't
[21:47:38] <Mjolinor> mine has hte motor on grommets, very lsoe
[21:47:40] <Mjolinor> lose
[21:47:45] <Mjolinor> loose
[21:47:49] <alex4nder> gotcha.
[21:47:51] <Mjolinor> christ I need to drink less wine
[21:48:03] <alex4nder> Mjolinor: hooking the motor shaft to a proper spindle?
[21:48:06] <raynerd> alex4nder - there is no coupling...the spindle on the motor is exchanged for the chuck itself.
[21:48:08] <alex4nder> i.e. not 'direct drive'
[21:48:17] <DJ9DJ> gn8
[21:48:28] <alex4nder> raynerd: how's the runout doing that?
[21:48:38] <Mjolinor> I have a hole in the end of hte spindle that the motor shaft fits in, that is rigid with a grub screw
[21:48:48] <Mjolinor> but the motor is mounted to its plate by grommets
[21:49:01] <alex4nder> right, so it isn't fighting against the spindle
[21:49:04] <raynerd> alex - not with you?
[21:49:06] -!- DJ9DJ has quit [Quit: bye]
[21:49:23] <raynerd> runout doing that????
[21:49:41] <Mjolinor> the way raynerd is doing it is better but I have too small a motor to do that and I was concerned about losing magnetism if I dismantled the motor
[21:50:07] <raynerd> mjolinor..if it works on my psu
[21:50:19] <Mjolinor> :)
[21:50:26] <alex4nder> raynerd: the runout of the spindle if you're just replacing the motor's shaft.
[21:50:27] <raynerd> mjolinor: how you getting on with 12v for the motors?>
[21:50:41] <Mjolinor> well if it doesnt Ill buy it all of you for say 25% of what you paid, jsut as a favour you understand
[21:50:53] <Mjolinor> for the steppers you mean?
[21:50:58] <Mjolinor> or the spindle?
[21:51:06] <Mjolinor> both are OK anyway
[21:51:19] <raynerd> alex4nder - I`ve not made mine yet but apparently with the bearing housing supporting it, he is getting excellent results on the link I showed you above.
[21:51:27] <alex4nder> ok
[21:51:29] <raynerd> mjolinor: I was asking about the steppers
[21:51:33] <Mjolinor> but I have no microstepping, I htink if oyu bought a controller then it will have microstepping
[21:51:49] <Mjolinor> not sure you need it though, one step is plenty small enough on this thing

[22:25:08] <joe9> what is the 4th axis? isn't it just x, y and z axes?
[22:25:21] <joe9> alex4nder: did you use 4 stepper motors or 3 stepper motors?
[22:25:36] <joe9> alex4nder: i found a link where they were using 4, hence wanted to check.
[22:26:00] <alex4nder> 3 right now, but I speced everything so I could run a 4th
[22:26:27] <joe9> is there a mount for the 4th in the taig? or, does it need other parts?

At this moment whenever I want to do anything emc says me that axes aren't homes (which is tru of course), but I cannot home them because then it looks for the limit switches to end the homing sequence. Is it possible to tell EMC that the position where the cursor is now should automatica
[22:36:14] <educa> lly be the home location of the machine ? (to test without real hardware attached)

[23:18:29] <joe9> http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170718022262&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNAFP:US:1123#ht_500wt_1413
[23:19:17] <ssi> supporting the free end of stock that you're holding in a vertical rotary table
[23:20:37] <joe9> oh, ok.
[23:20:50] <joe9> ssi, thanks.
[23:21:07] <joe9> alex4nder: what chuck and arbor did you buy?

[23:31:35] <joe9> alex4nder: what do you think of this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/gecko-4-axis-drive-4-taig-maxnc-sherline-cnc-lathe-mill-/160645363378?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256735b6b2
[23:32:37] <alex4nder> probably fine
[23:33:12] <jdhnc> has the advantage of single shipping charge.

[23:36:27] <jdhnc> tb6560 vs. G540 :)
[23:40:16] <jdhnc> http://www.ebay.com/itm/110831789629
[23:40:17] <joe9> wow, what a difference in price..
[23:42:16] <joe9> jdhnc: thanks. i should probably see if i can buy these from amazon and not worry about shipping.
[23:42:24] <ssi> http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170718022262&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNAFP:US:1123#ht_500wt_1413
[23:42:28] <ssi> woops
[23:43:28] <jdhnc> joe9: not likely for the price.
[23:43:47] <jdhnc> g540 is $240 from keling, won't get it any cheaper that I've seen.
[23:44:00] <ssi> the 540 is a nice machine
[23:46:23] <alex4nder> yah, that's a great price.
[23:46:24] <jdhnc> and a 5i25 for it?
[23:46:45] <ssi> in my opinion, the g540 is a great box if you're gonna do software stepgen
[23:47:02] <jdhnc> why the caveat
[23:47:02] <ssi> if you're gonna do a mesa card, you are likely better off with individual drivers
[23:47:16] <ssi> the g540 has a built in breakout
[23:47:23] <ssi> you don't need the breakout if you run mesa
[23:47:48] <jdhnc> 5i25 should plug in to a g540 with a normal cable, then you have another port on the 5i25 for IO
[23:48:01] <ssi> yeah I supposed so
[23:48:12] <ssi> I haven't looked at the 5i25 at all
[23:48:18] <ssi> just the 5i20 and 7i43
[23:48:56] <jdhnc> $79, plain db25 cable, hardware stepgen to the g540 and 22? other IO's?
[23:51:27] <jdhnc> if they had 20th century web ordering, I would impulse buy stuff.
[23:51:33] <ssi> haha yeah
