[00:00:18] -!- frallzor has quit []
[00:00:27] <skunkworks__> is it setup correctly?
[00:00:32] * skunkworks__ has not clue really....
[00:00:41] <MDesade> i think so
[00:00:44] <JT-Shop> hi skunkworks
[00:00:56] <skunkworks__> Hey!
[00:01:10] -!- syyl_ has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[00:02:45] <JT-Shop> MDesade: can you jumper the charge pump out to test the bob?
[00:02:59] <MDesade> i've tried both ways
[00:03:11] -!- robin_sz [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:03:22] <robin_sz> pesky interweb
[00:03:26] <ReadError> so i didnt realize
[00:03:32] <ReadError> the company EMC made you all change the name
[00:03:54] <robin_sz> they did?
[00:03:58] <MDesade> really? they did?
[00:04:04] <ReadError> yea
[00:04:09] <ReadError> thats what wiki said
[00:04:11] <robin_sz> well well
[00:04:20] <JT-Shop> yea, they wanted top google hits
[00:04:25] <MDesade> wasn't it originally called "blue collar linux" and THAT changed to linuxEMC? now it's changing AGAIN??
[00:04:37] <robin_sz> no
[00:04:39] <JT-Shop> not that I know of
[00:04:41] <robin_sz> it was always EMC
[00:04:43] <ReadError> thats pretty lame of them
[00:04:50] <JT-Shop> EMC > EMC2 > LinuxCNC
[00:04:51] <MDesade> 13 years ago, it was
[00:05:04] <JT-Shop> and EMC was the name that NIST used
[00:05:06] <robin_sz> never heard of "blue collar linux"
[00:05:13] <robin_sz> it was EMC when NIST wrote it
[00:05:56] <robin_sz> it may well have been included in a distro called "blue collar linux" that I never heard of though
[00:06:16] <MDesade> back in the late 90's there WAS a distro called "blue collar Linux" and it got either renamed or absorbed into the linux-EMC tree
[00:06:50] <robin_sz> nope
[00:07:11] <MDesade> i don't remember if it was redhat/centos or slackware based....
[00:07:18] <robin_sz> emc is the NIST control package
[00:07:21] <MDesade> it's been a long time.... oh well?
[00:07:43] <robin_sz> and the current distro was put together by the guys here
[00:07:52] <robin_sz> there was the EMC BDI before that
[00:08:01] <robin_sz> by Paul Corner
[00:08:09] <robin_sz> who has disappeared afaik
[00:08:18] <JT-Shop> I never could get the BDI to work so I must be Brain Dead
[00:08:20] <robin_sz> I dont think we ever got all the build tools for that
[00:08:30] <robin_sz> I occasiaonally did
[00:08:38] <robin_sz> but not with a whole lot of success
[00:08:46] <JT-Shop> he got mad for some reason and forked off iirc
[00:09:05] <JT-Shop> speaking of forks... time to fire up the barbie here
[00:09:09] <robin_sz> yeah, it was long and involved
[00:09:11] <JT-Shop> see you guys later
[00:09:21] <robin_sz> buh byee
[00:09:26] -!- tjb1 has quit [Quit: tjb1]
[00:09:29] <ReadError> why did NIST stop dev on it?
[00:09:40] <robin_sz> it had run its course
[00:09:49] <robin_sz> and tbh, it sucked a little
[00:10:02] <robin_sz> it was the guys first ever C++ project, and it showed
[00:11:00] <robin_sz> it badly needed re-writing ... and dumping of various bits, which has mostly happened
[00:11:48] <robin_sz> part of the problem was passing of messages in concrete data types, instead of a generic message containing a type, or at least casting it to a generic type
[00:12:06] <ReadError> i must say
[00:12:10] <ReadError> it works really nice now :)
[00:12:13] <robin_sz> so every time we wanted to add a new message to hte NML, we had to recode the whole thing
[00:12:21] <robin_sz> yeah, a LOT has happened
[00:12:39] <robin_sz> paul was very much agaisnt soemof the changes if I recall correctly and off he went
[00:12:50] <robin_sz> HAL was the last straw
[00:13:09] <robin_sz> there was much friction etc, but, thats how it goes sometimes
[00:14:01] <robin_sz> if I had known EMC corp wanted concessions, I could have lent you my tame patent lawyer :)
[00:14:22] <robin_sz> we could have had a few hundred K of development money out of them :)
[00:16:52] -!- tjb1 [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:17:51] <jdhNC> the linuxcnc logo looks like crap with a .25 endmill in MDF

[00:24:13] -!- Loetmichel has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
[00:24:37] <robin_sz> thats because it is supposed to be gut with a 50mm ball cutter into a 4 ton steel billet
[00:24:56] <robin_sz> :)
[00:25:39] <robin_sz> a friend is using the Vectric stuff to generate code for his router to great effect
[00:25:53] <robin_sz> seems a top qulaity bit of sofwtware for the money
[00:26:38] <ReadError> visualmill = mmmmmm
[00:26:39] <jdhNC> I bought a copy of cut-2d for my router
[00:26:47] <ReadError> i didnt like cut2d...
[00:26:49] <robin_sz> yeah, he has visual mill too
[00:26:58] <ReadError> visualmill is _awesome_
[00:27:04] <robin_sz> it is for milling
[00:27:05] <jdhNC> what's not to like, for 2d cutting?
[00:27:13] <robin_sz> its no use for the router thhough
[00:27:21] <robin_sz> cut2d has some limitations
[00:27:31] <ReadError> not as flexible as i would like
[00:27:38] <jdhNC> sure, it only does plain 2d
[00:27:39] <ReadError> you have 4 options, all very concrete
[00:27:54] <robin_sz> when we enquired they said "ah yes, thats deliberate ... you need cut 3d to get that option"
[00:27:55] <jdhNC> what would you add?
[00:28:12] <ReadError> ive cut about 4 different parts using visualmill
[00:28:14] <jdhNC> how many 2d ops are there?
[00:28:20] <ReadError> i can bang out a toolpath in 15 minutes or less now ;)
[00:28:47] <robin_sz> they dont include basic part nesting in cut 2d (minimum gap between parts, gap to edge)
[00:29:05] <robin_sz> yeah, its OK when you get used to it
[00:29:23] <robin_sz> stuff like edge pocketing
[00:29:39] <robin_sz> we do a lot of stuff where the DXF is a sqaure
[00:29:48] <robin_sz> with a line 20mm from one side
[00:29:52] <ReadError> i import into visualmill using igs
[00:29:55] <ReadError> works awesome
[00:30:20] <robin_sz> we need to cut the rebate, 20mm from the edge, then cut out the square
[00:30:27] <robin_sz> cut2d has trouble with that
[00:30:44] <robin_sz> we have to draw a 20mm wide oblong, machine that, then machine the square
[00:30:58] <robin_sz> ReadError, but no use for routing afaik
[00:31:12] <robin_sz> ReadError, wont do bridges for example
[00:31:34] <ReadError> i like the enter/exit strats
[00:31:41] <robin_sz> yep
[00:31:42] <ReadError> ended up with a much nicer cut
[00:31:51] <robin_sz> its awesome on our Haas
[00:32:17] <robin_sz> but cut2d works better for our router
[00:32:48] <robin_sz> the router has no trouble taking a plunge into 18mm ply .. 7hp gets the job done :)
[00:34:36] <jdhNC> the most annoying cut2d thing is that it won't cut a single line from a dxf
[00:35:02] <robin_sz> true
[00:35:07] <robin_sz> cut3d will though
[00:35:30] <robin_sz> we had exactly that issue
[00:35:47] <robin_sz> here was my last routing excercise

[01:24:54] <jymmm> now
[01:25:25] <jdhNC> cool. I can't see the sun
[01:25:46] <jymmm> =)
[01:27:03] <jdhNC> it has been dark for almost an hour though.
[01:30:13] <jymmm> I thin it's peeking now, brb

[01:38:11] <jymmm> make electric heaters
[01:38:44] phantoneD is now known as phantoxeD
[01:39:45] <jymmm> jdhNC: I have around 100K of assorted gauges of Nichrome, going to use the cement to create a heating element for heat sealing plastic tubing
[01:39:52] <jymmm> 100K feet
[01:40:11] -!- phantoxeD has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[01:40:39] <tjb1> Got the initial height sensing done :D
[01:40:48] <jdhNC> that's a lot of wire for sealing a tube
[01:41:06] <pcw_home> neat eclipse. darkest I remember in the bay area
[01:41:09] <jymmm> jdhNC: Heh, it's really not that much as some of it is 36gauge
[01:41:26] <jymmm> pcw_home: yeah, waiting for it to peak
[01:41:46] <jymmm> jdhNC: I have some 40ga too
[01:41:51] <tjb1> http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=10eeC4g2
[01:42:25] <pcw_home> really strange looking (Ive only seen one total eclipse :1979 in Washington)
[01:43:02] <jymmm> pcw_home: I only have UV goggles, so can't fully watch it
[01:44:12] <Tom_itx> it fell behind the trees but i saw a good part of it thru the welding goggles
[01:44:34] <pcw_home> just put a 1/8 hole in a piece of paper and look at the "pinhole camera" image
[01:44:57] <pcw_home> 1/8"
[01:45:06] <Tom_itx> yeah
[01:45:30] <Tom_itx> i think i've seen maybe 3 in my time
[01:46:23] <Tom_itx> one i recall, the birds went to roost

[01:52:02] <jymmm> It's being sloooow
[01:52:50] <jymmm> had it been a full moon, it be over before you could snap the shutter =)

[04:14:58] <jdhNC> Aero: not me, I was being cruel and making fun of his easystepper/mach.
[04:15:35] <jdhNC> I did get my g0704 running and spindle control working.
[04:15:56] <Aero-Tec> I wish I knew if mine was fixed
[04:16:34] <Aero-Tec> spent a hour testing, look fixed, but has fooled me several time before
[04:16:44] <jdhNC> what problem?
[04:17:14] <Aero-Tec> will work great for some time, not one hiccup, then it will start again
[04:17:35] <Aero-Tec> motor growling in one direction only
[04:17:52] -!- r00t4rd3d [r00t4rd3d!~r00t4rd3d@unaffiliated/r00t4rd3d] has joined #linuxcnc
[04:17:54] <jdhNC> brushes?
[04:17:57] <Aero-Tec> and loosing steps by the boat load
[04:18:00] <Aero-Tec> no
[04:18:04] <jdhNC> oh, stepper.
[04:18:07] <Aero-Tec> check them
[04:18:16] <Aero-Tec> servo
[04:18:24] <Aero-Tec> step and dir
[04:18:31] <jdhNC> servo loosing steps?
[04:18:31] <Aero-Tec> gecko drive
[04:18:36] <Aero-Tec> lol
[04:18:40] <Aero-Tec> yes
[04:18:56] <Aero-Tec> go figure
[04:19:17] <Aero-Tec> it would just loose steps but not fault
[04:19:29] <Aero-Tec> have no idea how that can happen
[04:19:42] <Aero-Tec> now if will fault out
[04:19:56] <Aero-Tec> guess I am fixing it?
[04:20:21] <jdhNC> did you swap drives/motors/pins and see if the problem followed it?
[04:20:37] <Aero-Tec> I have been changing grounds, moving power wire and such
[04:20:47] <Aero-Tec> I wish
[04:21:04] <Aero-Tec> it started like it was only one axis
[04:21:15] <Aero-Tec> but found out both will do it
[04:21:28] <Aero-Tec> and they some time act up together
[04:21:45] <Aero-Tec> some times on at a time
[04:22:46] <Aero-Tec> it can be running great and then one move growl, but the next a split sec later is fine, and it can be fine for a long time
[04:23:20] <Aero-Tec> or it can growl for a long time ether axis or both
[04:23:40] <Aero-Tec> but always when the dir sig is high
[04:23:51] <archivist> check signals with a scope to check if in spec
[04:23:55] <Aero-Tec> that is the only constant I can find
[04:24:02] <Aero-Tec> yes
[04:24:10] <Aero-Tec> did that
[04:24:18] <Aero-Tec> they look good
[04:24:38] <Aero-Tec> even when growling like hell the sigs look good
[04:24:42] <archivist> add pull up resistor to dir signal is it high enough etc
[04:24:46] <Aero-Tec> nice and solid
[04:25:11] <Aero-Tec> the encoder sigs are good when it is running good
[04:25:26] <archivist> looking right does not mean the right voltage
[04:26:20] <Aero-Tec> and horrible when growling
[04:26:37] <Aero-Tec> the sig levels look good
[04:27:08] <Aero-Tec> changed computers as still the same
[04:27:59] <archivist> what voltage, is it correct for the signal level specification, looking smooth is not the right answer
[04:28:51] <Aero-Tec> they should be 5 volt right?
[04:29:01] <Aero-Tec> or is it 3.3
[04:29:09] <Aero-Tec> or 3.6
[04:29:18] <Aero-Tec> I like the older stuff
[04:29:44] <Aero-Tec> there was a standard 5 volt and that was it
[04:29:52] <archivist> you would know what level if you looked in your drives manual
[04:29:56] <Aero-Tec> now days it is hard to tell
[04:30:06] <Valen> the wonderfull thing about standards
[04:30:10] <Valen> theres so many to choose from
[04:30:16] <Aero-Tec> lol
[04:30:18] <archivist> this tells me you have not checked
[04:30:38] <Aero-Tec> it looked to be 5 volts
[04:30:51] <Aero-Tec> but I did not check for sure
[04:31:06] <Aero-Tec> was using a x10 probe
[04:31:47] <MDesade> no, it isn't running as i couldn't get to frys to buy a couple parallel cables AND watch the eclipse
[04:31:51] <archivist> and is the setup time correct for the drive, time dir is set before the step is toggled
[04:31:56] <Aero-Tec> would have to work it out as my scope does not have on screen readouts
[04:32:36] <Aero-Tec> I got to get a better scope
[04:32:44] <Aero-Tec> hard to say
[04:32:50] <archivist> is the step signal wide enough for the minimum pulse period too
[04:32:56] <Aero-Tec> I did not look at the timing
[04:33:23] <archivist> all this you can do by learning to use ones scope and reading the drive manual
[04:34:05] <Aero-Tec> my scope is over 40 years old
[04:34:07] <archivist> one can check the screen calibration you dont need on screen display
[04:34:28] <Aero-Tec> 20 mhz
[04:34:36] <Aero-Tec> I know
[04:34:46] <Aero-Tec> got lazy
[04:34:56] <Valen> on screen readouts
[04:34:59] <Aero-Tec> it looked close
[04:35:15] <Valen> in my day we had to wait for the valves to wam up before the scope worked and we were HAPPY!
[04:35:20] <Valen> warm
[04:35:23] <jdhNC> I had an ancient tek 465b. it was huge.. sold it and got a cheap chinese color LCD that is much more useful for me.
[04:35:24] <Aero-Tec> I did not double check the voltage
[04:35:53] <Valen> mainly because i could skive off and read web comics while the scope warmed ;->
[04:36:26] <Aero-Tec> I had one of them at one time
[04:36:40] <Aero-Tec> man was it nice
[04:37:59] <Aero-Tec> it took awhile to warm up to spec, but nice display and nice delayed, it just worked very well
[04:38:27] <Aero-Tec> but you had to make sure the tubes were were good
[04:39:16] <Aero-Tec> got a old time philips one now, it was nice in its day, great for TV repair, that was what I used it for
[04:39:27] <MDesade> i STILL use a tek 2465BDV and i love the scope, tube or no tube
[04:40:03] <Valen> i have a 700mhz tek now
[04:40:09] <Valen> no storage though
[04:40:20] <Valen> that would make life too easy lol
[04:41:07] <MDesade> yeah, i could use some storage myself
[04:41:14] <Aero-Tec> but its controls and contacts are dirty or worn out, I have dumped a whack of contact cleaner into the controls and switches
[04:41:21] <MDesade> it does EVERYTHING else i need, but that
[04:42:08] <archivist> I got lucky on ebay and got a logic analyser frame that has scope cards in it, 8 chans
[04:42:23] <Aero-Tec> so voltage readings are not reliable, thus the getting laze reading it by counting the div of deflection
[04:42:53] <Aero-Tec> you read it and not sure if it is telling the truth or not
[04:43:02] <Aero-Tec> time for a new one for sure
[04:43:12] <archivist> use dvm to calibrate from a 5v supply
[04:43:32] <archivist> then you are sure
[04:44:03] <Aero-Tec> I wish
[04:44:36] <Aero-Tec> the contacts are wore out, they make and break
[04:44:55] <Aero-Tec> one sec it can be good but the next, not so much
[04:45:12] <archivist> clean, rotate back/forward till cleaned
[04:45:12] <alex4nder> yoh
[04:45:31] <Aero-Tec> I have tried
[04:45:46] <Aero-Tec> several times
[04:46:06] <Aero-Tec> poured the contact cleaner into it
[04:46:23] <Aero-Tec> worked it hard and still not so good
[04:46:58] <Aero-Tec> it did get better then what it was, but still not good
[04:47:44] <Aero-Tec> time got a good storage high speed one
[04:48:12] <Aero-Tec> my scope could be just to slow to see what up
[04:48:39] <Aero-Tec> 20 mhz for digital is to slow
[04:48:48] <archivist> 20 meg is fast enough
[04:49:02] <Aero-Tec> it is better then nothing
[04:49:11] <Aero-Tec> but you can miss things
[04:49:33] <Aero-Tec> transient spikes
[04:50:31] <Aero-Tec> I used that scope hard for a good number of years in my TV repair shop, time for a new one
[04:50:39] <archivist> I used an manky 30 year old scope to get mine running top right http://www.archivist.info/cnc/stage8/IMG_0268.JPG

[04:53:11] <Aero-Tec> mine was running for several years, not it is going nuts
[04:54:08] <Aero-Tec> yes it is good enough to get running, but is it good enough to hunt down pesky problems in a digital work
[04:54:14] <Aero-Tec> not so much
[04:54:29] <Aero-Tec> my CNC was running
[04:55:05] <Aero-Tec> oops now not not
[04:55:34] <archivist> I had pesky noise problems when I added the B axis and the old scope found that too
[04:56:37] <archivist> the signal was on the edge of the right level and the vfd was effecting it, pulled it up, fixed
[04:57:12] <Aero-Tec> the only signal problem I can find when it is acting up is the encoders
[04:58:45] <Aero-Tec> but if the motors are doing wild things then I guess they will mess with the sig steam of the encoders
[05:00:29] <Aero-Tec> yes old scopes can find nose, and they can do tons of things, but they can also miss some things if they happen fast enough
[05:00:40] <Aero-Tec> noise

[15:07:42] <tjb1> Each time this is activated -> motor.step(1, BACKWARD, DOUBLE); it steps 1 time in the direction
[15:07:43] <JT-Shop> so your ardunio will handle all the software functions of the THC?
[15:08:11] <JT-Shop> good score jymmm
[15:08:17] <tjb1> Im run the 50:1 voltage through it
[15:08:26] <tjb1> and the range in the current program is 450-550
[15:08:34] <JT-Shop> your tip voltage?
[15:08:38] <tjb1> which is about 3.5v after the division
[15:08:48] <tjb1> Yes
[15:08:53] <JT-Shop> I see
[15:09:42] <JT-Shop> would it be simpler to just have the ardunio output two pins, Up and Down?
[15:09:53] <tjb1> As inputs into Linux?
[15:10:00] <JT-Shop> aye
[15:11:01] <JT-Shop> somehow you have to tell the ardunio what is center and how wide it is
[15:11:37] <tjb1> center?
[15:11:48] <JT-Shop> target voltage
[15:12:01] <tjb1> I have a potentiometer hooked up now
[15:12:24] <JT-Shop> hooked up to?
[15:12:42] <tjb1> 5v, ground, and an analog input
[15:12:57] <tjb1> Well its not set up yet but thats how I will adjust the range
[15:13:05] <JT-Shop> to the ardunio as the target voltage input?
[15:13:19] <tjb1> Yes, it will adjust from 0 - 1023
[15:13:41] <JT-Shop> sounds simple enough
[15:14:00] <tjb1> I have to run the tip voltage through a voltage divider before the arduino still
[15:14:01] <tjb1> It can't handle 7v
[15:14:22] <JT-Shop> are you pushing rope up hill because you don't know about the THC-Up-Down comp?
[15:15:11] <tjb1> Ha what?
[15:15:21] <skunkworks> JT-Shop: does that comp take into account current and commanded velocity to?
[15:15:31] <skunkworks> Too
[15:16:04] <JT-Shop> it's the same one I use but takes up/down inputs instead of volts converted to velocity
[15:16:53] <JT-Shop> so if you have a pot for target voltage and the ardounio has two pins up and down the rest could be handled by the comp
[15:17:12] <JT-Shop> tjb1: http://gnipsel.com/shop/plasma/plasma.xhtml
[15:17:31] <tjb1> I would also need to compare voltage in the arduino?
[15:17:39] <JT-Shop> skunkworks: current is set at the plasma torch
[15:18:06] <JT-Shop> aye, that is how you determine if you want up, down or nothing
[15:18:22] <tjb1> Sounds simple enough
[15:18:29] <JT-Shop> skunkworks: yes it takes in commanded velocity
[15:18:34] <tjb1> Does that take into account corners?
[15:18:44] <tjb1> Guess you just answered that
[15:18:56] <JT-Shop> doesn't care about corners if your velocity is within range
[15:19:13] <tjb1> How does that touch off work?
[15:19:39] <JT-Shop> I have a floating head with a micro switch connected to the motion.probe-input
[15:20:19] <tjb1> You just set the distance between the torch and the micro switch and then add the pierce height?
[15:20:25] <JT-Shop> when I run that it sets my Z0 using G92
[15:20:56] -!- psha [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[15:21:13] <JT-Shop> the G1 Z0.070 (Raise up to Z0) line gets the torch to Z0 after the probe move
[15:21:43] <JT-Shop> then the G92 sets that point as Z0
[15:21:48] <tjb1> So you have .07 between the torch touching the material and setting the switch off?
[15:21:52] <JT-Shop> then it raises up to pierce height
[15:22:14] <JT-Shop> aye that is how far it moves to trip the micro switch
[15:22:31] <tjb1> and the computer will handle the corner lock by ignoring the inputs?
[15:22:58] <JT-Shop> yep
[15:23:08] <JT-Shop> this shows the floating head http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f163/johnplctech/Plasma%20Cutter/P1010030.jpg
[15:23:16] <JT-Shop> and the touch off switch is the lower one
[15:23:40] <skunkworks> you would think that it would be better to offset the voltage when the velocity slows down - so it it still does torch hight compinsation.. too hard?
[15:24:12] <tjb1> Thanks JT-Shop, guess I will move this direction
[15:24:19] <JT-Shop> not possible to control voltage directly only with distance and speed
[15:24:42] <tjb1> That back switch your home and limits?
[15:24:50] <JT-Shop> aye
[15:25:04] <tjb1> Thats some thick stock
[15:25:08] <JT-Shop> more photos in the album
[15:25:11] <tjb1> 1"?
[15:25:22] <JT-Shop> that is a slat :)
[15:25:33] <JT-Shop> might be 11ga material on top of it
[15:25:43] <skunkworks> right - I am saying - in the comp - as the velocity slows down around a corner - the comp knows that the voltage will change x amount to automatically compinsate.
[15:25:52] <skunkworks> (if that made sense)
[15:26:43] <skunkworks> so instead of locking the torch head - it keeps adjusting at the same hight.
[15:27:00] <skunkworks> maybe I am not understanding..
[15:27:00] <tjb1> It will only lock on tight radiuses right?
[15:27:04] <JT-Shop> the comp controls the voltage with the distance from the tip to material but when you get too slow you don't want the tip to dive into the material so you don't adjust
[15:27:17] <tjb1> Large circles it shouldn't slow down enough
[15:27:38] <JT-Shop> it doen't care what kind of move your doing it only compares the actual velocity to the commanded velocity
[15:28:21] <tjb1> Does that comp require the arc start and motion start inputs?
[15:28:32] <skunkworks> right - because when it slows down - the voltage increases.. So the comp would see the the velocity slow down and the voltage increase to still keep adjusting the torch hight automagically
[15:28:35] <JT-Shop> the acceleration of your XY axes control when it can't move very fast
[15:29:07] <JT-Shop> skunkworks: yea and you don't want that or the tip will dive into the material trying to fix the voltage
[15:29:42] <JT-Shop> tjb1: it uses the arc ok output from the plasma torch
[15:29:53] <skunkworks> does the voltage go off scale?
[15:30:03] <tjb1> so the torch_on bit is in the software
[15:30:38] <JT-Shop> the torch on is M3 with S>0
[15:30:46] <JT-Shop> torch off is M5
[15:30:57] <JT-Shop> skunkworks: what do you mean?
[15:31:03] <tjb1> So it just requires the torch up and down and then arc ok
[15:31:15] <JT-Shop> iirc yea
[15:31:23] <tjb1> Which will be going to the computer anyway...
[15:31:31] <skunkworks> heh - I must be thinking wrong. ;)
[15:31:42] <tjb1> Doesn't the DB25 only have 2 inputs?
[15:32:01] <JT-Shop> do you mean the parallel port?
[15:32:21] <tjb1> Yeah
[15:32:46] <JT-Shop> depends on how you configre it if the hardware allows
[15:32:58] <JT-Shop> http://linuxcnc.org/docview/html/hal/parallel_port.html
[15:33:09] <tjb1> I would need motion start, torch up and torch down which is 3
[15:33:58] <JT-Shop> so 2 spare if you configure the parallel port as output
[15:34:06] <JT-Shop> see diagram in link

[15:50:31] <JT-Shop> your welcome
[15:54:21] <jdhNC> anyone use ngcgui for pocketing, or just straight moves for squaring stock?
[15:56:45] <Connor> I used it to do a db9 the other night.. I had to modify the db25 for it.. found that it doesn't take into account tool diameter though.
[15:57:12] <jdhNC> it doesn't?
[15:57:20] <Connor> well.. the db25 didn't.
[15:57:34] <Connor> Not sure if it's suppose to read the tool table or what..
[15:57:39] <jdhNC> how fast will your spindle turn?
[15:57:40] <Connor> I need to research a little and find out.
[15:57:53] <Connor> I can get it up to 3k RPM
[15:58:02] <Connor> well.. 3.1k
[15:58:08] <Connor> but, limited it to 3k.
[15:58:42] <Connor> I wouldn't run it over 2500 with the stock bearings for any length of time..
[15:59:06] <jdhNC> I did the same. Pretty nifty. Not sure I like the spindle estop there though. Guess it would be ok with spindle feedback.
[16:00:02] <Connor> I put my primary estop below the control box. Of course, mine isn't mounted to the side of the spindle anymore.
[16:00:25] <jdhNC> did you keep the chip guard? I semi-crushed mine last night on the vise
[16:00:42] <Connor> Heck no. I pulled that thing off Day 1.
[16:01:18] <tjb1> JT-Shop: Can I run the torch up, down, and arc ok through the g540 to the computer?
[16:01:22] <Connor> and bypassed it. The wire for which BTW, can be used with a really for a failsafe
[16:01:40] <Connor> it's on the AC side of the circuit.
[16:02:03] <jdhNC> my spindle almost starts up when you start linuxcnc until the relay kicks in

[16:02:46] <tjb1> It has 4 inputs and 2 outputs
[16:02:47] <alex4nder-> hey
[16:02:49] <JT-Shop> btw ngcgui has a pocket routine
[16:03:07] <tjb1> Ill use 1 input for the homing switches, then the other 3 for the thc connections
[16:03:16] <jdhNC> JT: oh, I didn't see that one in there.
[16:04:01] <Connor> Yea. I have the same issue. or DID. I'm setting it up so my break out board is disabled, and I have a push-to-start button. When I push it.. enables the BOB, allowing the BOB to send the signal to charge pump to latch the relay.
[16:05:51] <jdhNC> the 'enable' relay on the spindle control?
[16:06:08] <Connor> No. The one on the charge pump.
[16:06:27] <jdhNC> maybe I should get one.
[16:06:34] <Connor> http://cnc4pc.com/Tech_Docs/1_C1GR4_1.pdf
[16:06:54] <JT-Shop> seems like DB25 does use the tool diameter from the tool table
[16:07:05] <jdhNC> JT: it does
[16:07:20] <Connor> Yea.. but, I had my tool set at .125 and it didn't take it into account ??
[16:08:37] <Connor> I'm adding DPDT relay to the mix though. 1 side will be for 12v to handle the failsafe spindle relay (and 12v to switch the reversing relay at some point) other side will be to handle the enable/disable of the stepper drivers.
[16:08:37] <jdhNC> it has g41/g42 in the iquad thing it uses
[16:09:01] <Connor> what is g41 / g42 ?
[16:09:12] <jdhNC> I can't come up with a good scenario for usign stepper enable/disable
[16:09:31] <Connor> jdhNC: I can. No heat when your machine is off..
[16:09:47] <Connor> I don't want the drivers being driven while I have the machine OFF
[16:09:58] <jdhNC> I guess. I was going to kill A/C
[16:10:38] <jdhNC> g41/42 are cutter radius compensation
[16:10:56] <jdhNC> mine get hot. These drives are not very bright.
[16:11:16] <Connor> I'll have to go back and look and see why I had to manually account for the diamater.
[16:11:30] <Connor> I just added a new variable for tool diamater.
[16:11:39] <Connor> I don't always use the tool table.

[16:27:29] <tjb1> You talking about the printing it on to something then ironing that on and then acid burning the copper off?
[16:28:03] <Loetmichel> s/ironing/expose to UV/develop
[16:28:07] <Loetmichel> but yes
[16:28:31] <tjb1> Well I found a company that will do boards under 30^2 for $17
[16:29:21] <tjb1> Well…$35 shipping fee, I don't think so
[16:29:23] <Loetmichel> i know companys that will do std double sided 100mm*160mm for less than 5 Eur.
[16:29:36] <Loetmichel> with print and solder resist
[16:29:49] <Loetmichel> but only if you order 50 identical
[16:30:00] <tjb1> I don't need 50 :)
[16:30:33] <Loetmichel> for a single piece its most of the time simpler to do it yourseld, especially if its single sided
[16:30:55] <Loetmichel> if you have a CNC mill its even simpler
[16:30:56] <tjb1> Ill probably end up using protoboard
[16:31:06] <Aero-Tec> one can use oxygen peroxide I heard
[16:31:22] <Loetmichel> Aero-Tec: not solely
[16:31:40] <tjb1> I might spring for a board around $30
[16:31:47] <tjb1> but I will just protoboard it
[16:33:12] <Loetmichel> there are two/three comm en used etching agents for copper PCB board: FerrousIIIcloride, sodium persulfate and for the impatioent: a mix of HCl and H2O2
[16:33:42] <jdhNC> and carbide
[16:33:59] <Loetmichel> carbide?
[16:34:17] <Aero-Tec> I used to make boards but used ferric chloride to etch it
[16:34:46] <jdhNC> carbide bit in the mill.
[16:34:54] <Loetmichel> i have used sodium persulfate
[16:35:03] <Loetmichel> ....before i got the mill ;-)
[16:35:08] <Loetmichel> jdhNC: ok ;-)
[16:35:28] <Aero-Tec> high speed dril bit will work but will not last, but they are real cheap
[16:35:58] <Aero-Tec> I would just make it myself
[16:36:06] <Aero-Tec> and no CNC needed
[16:36:38] <Aero-Tec> I made ton of boards with just a dremal drill press
[16:36:57] <Loetmichel> Aero-Tec: fot the isolation milling
[16:37:01] <Loetmichel> NOT the drilling
[16:37:37] <Aero-Tec> you etch the boards that will center punch the copper and tell you where to drill

[16:38:07] <Aero-Tec> your right
[16:38:19] <Aero-Tec> but then you do not etch
[16:38:23] <Loetmichel> right
[16:38:40] <Loetmichel> like i said: i etched a lot: BEFORE i got the mill ;-)
[16:38:55] <Aero-Tec> if you etch, you can drill the holes using a dremal drill and press
[16:39:07] <Loetmichel> the thing is called a dremel
[16:39:21] <Loetmichel> or a minidrill to avoid any (C)
[16:39:30] <Aero-Tec> lol
[16:39:55] <Aero-Tec> is that the generic term
[16:40:10] <Loetmichel> etching isnt that complicated bur requires a set of tools anyway
[16:40:24] <Loetmichel> as far as i know: yes
[16:40:39] <Tom_itx> etching is rather easy
[16:40:58] <tjb1> I would love to have the stuff to etch
[16:41:08] <tjb1> But Its going to take all my money to buy the materials for this plasma cutter
[16:41:22] <Aero-Tec> well I used the real deal as the other one were not available back in the day

[16:44:11] <Aero-Tec> Tom_itx: what etchent are you using?
[16:44:25] <Tom_itx> i use sodium or ammonium persulphate
[16:44:26] <Tom_itx> i have both
[16:44:33] <djdelorie> LoetMichel: I use curpic chloride etchant, not one of the three you mention
[16:44:41] <Tom_itx> iirc one works better with etch pencils
[16:45:06] <Loetmichel> djdelorie: isnt that whats generated when using HCl and H2O2?
[16:45:20] <djdelorie> eventually, but it's a different etchant.
[16:45:35] <djdelorie> You can use HCl/H2O2 to *make* CuCl etchant, or you can make it other ways
[16:45:49] <tjb1> Ha, this company doesn't even have a 800 number
[16:45:52] <Loetmichel> thats what i meant
[16:46:01] <djdelorie> I made mine with HCl/H2O2 and about half a pound of copper
[16:46:04] <Aero-Tec> my tank was much like yours but much bigger
[16:46:19] <Aero-Tec> I could do over 20 boards at a time
[16:46:34] <djdelorie> HCl/H2O2 is itself an etchant. My tank no longer had H2O2 in it
[16:46:40] <Loetmichel> Aero-Tec: for a "quick etch in between" one can improvise:
[16:46:45] <Loetmichel> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=9125

[17:36:20] <IchGuckLive> therfore im teatching 8k students a year
[17:37:10] <Connor> No, You specify the tool in the gui..
[17:37:16] <Connor> It asks which tool number..
[17:37:25] <jdhNC> Connor db25 calls iquad that does radius compensation
[17:37:48] <jdhNC> I tried db25 briefly last night, but I had a .25" end mill in.
[17:37:56] <IchGuckLive> you need to save the ngc and reload it
[17:38:15] <jdhNC> also, it complained about no % or no program end.
[17:38:31] <Connor> jdhNC: You don't have it loaded into the gui correctly.
[17:38:49] <jdhNC> what part?
[17:39:04] <jdhNC> I added a postamble setting/file with just an M2 and it was happy after that.
[17:39:04] <Connor> That's the other thing.. the sample file to get it to load didn't work right.. I ended up having to copy the files into my nc_files directory.

[17:40:15] <jdhNC> I just hardcoded my path
[17:40:15] <Connor> that would always throw a error.. it didn't like the [RS274NGC] part..
[17:40:30] <jdhNC> should be on a separate line
[17:40:41] <Connor> It is. IRC didn't spit it out right.
[17:41:37] <Connor> I'll do some more testing later.
[17:41:55] <Connor> I need to finish the e-stop, push-to-start and limit switch wiring..
[17:42:02] <jdhNC> I cut/pasted it from the doc. Worked fine except the path
[17:42:23] <Connor> might be the location I have it.. I'll try again tonight.
[17:42:30] <jdhNC> I would like limit switches too... and I think I want a separate home for X anyway (in the middle)
[17:42:52] <jdhNC> I went ahead and mounted the 7i37TA so I have lots of extra inputs.
[17:42:53] <Connor> I made my limit switch for X and mounted in the middle.
[17:43:08] <andypugh> You need a very long flag for X in the middle, or it doesn't know which way to home..
[17:43:10] -!- seb_kuzminsky [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[17:43:19] <jdhNC> if it is in the middle, it's not a limit switch?

[17:43:30] <jdhNC> connor: doubtful!
[17:43:47] <jdhNC> I'm not that organized.
[17:43:58] <Connor> jdhNC: Well.. at least take some pictures.
[17:44:13] <Connor> andypugh: Mine is typical setup with switch in middle with a flag on either side to trip it..
[17:44:20] <jdhNC> yeah, I will do that. I'm hoping to make the ballscrew mounts this week for x/y
[17:44:20] <Connor> I was going to use it for both home and limit.
[17:45:05] <jdhNC> oh, the left/right flags are the limits... gotcha. I just wanted to avoid full travel for homing, but it's so fast I guess it doesn't matter.
[17:45:08] <Connor> If that works, then, I'll install one for the Y.. the Z will probably have two switches.. top one for top end limit, and a adjustable lower one..
[17:45:46] <jdhNC> I think I got X up to 150ipm last night with the vise mounted in the middle.
[17:45:48] <Connor> jdhNC: Yea, I'm using those little adjustable endstops as the flags.
[17:46:11] <Connor> jdhNC: with the stock screws ?
[17:46:19] <jdhNC> yeah
[17:46:59] <jdhNC> 120ish on Z with the ballscrew and 2:1 drive
[17:47:02] <Connor> jdhNC: Yea, before I tightened everything up to get all the backlash out.. I could do about that. Now, 70IPM can cause it to stall.
[17:47:27] <jdhNC> I have X tight. Y has no anti-backlash screws in the nut.
[17:47:35] <Connor> I may have the pre-load on the jam nuts too tight.
[17:48:08] <Connor> I also sometimes get a awful resonance squeal sound at high speeds sometimes..
[17:48:19] <Connor> everything is oiled.. so, I'm not sure what that is.
[17:48:46] <jdhNC> I'll try dropping to half-stepping and see if that helps torque
[17:49:33] <Connor> The biggest thing that helped mine was the acceleration..
[17:49:34] <IchGuckLive> jdhNC: 8wire steppers ?

[17:50:54] <Connor> jdhNC: Yea. lowered it.. on the Z it's really low, but, with it that low, I can get it up to 80IPM on stock screws direct drive.

[21:28:35] <tjb1> If I were to intercept and apply my own stepper signals, LinuxCNC would no longer know the position of the stepper I modified correct?
[21:31:08] <andypugh> tjb1: Yes. Though LinuxCNC only has a vague impression of where a stepper is anyway
[21:31:42] <tjb1> Well if the code says to move .5, wouldn't it know and show that it has moved .5?
[21:32:02] <tjb1> I mean it won't know for sure that the stepper accomplished that, but it will show it "should" be there?
[21:34:14] <JT-Shop> you might want to study the stepgen component

[22:36:42] <Aero-Tec> need a sample of conditional branching
[22:36:57] <Aero-Tec> what sample program should I look at
[22:38:11] <Aero-Tec> any simple sample of Gcode programing with if then whiles and stuff?

[22:46:25] <archivist> er the docs and samples that it comes with

[22:48:08] <Aero-Tec> simple samples
[22:48:39] <archivist> the docs are simple, its all I needed to write http://www.archivist.info/cnc/standard_clock_n_teeth.ngc
[22:51:10] <JT-Shop> Aero-Tec: yes there are examples in the O Code chapter as well as example g code files
[22:53:37] <Aero-Tec> was looking for conditional branch example
[22:53:50] <Aero-Tec> there are lots of loops
[22:54:14] <JT-Shop> http://linuxcnc.org/docview/html/gcode/o-code.html#_conditional_a_id_sec_conditional_a
[22:54:22] <Aero-Tec> but a good if then branch example would be nice
[22:54:24] <andypugh> Do we have conditional branching?
[22:54:32] <JT-Shop> aye
[22:54:37] <andypugh> Ah, if / then /else
[22:54:44] <JT-Shop> just pasted you one
[22:54:50] <andypugh> Thought you meant "goto" _0
[22:54:59] <JT-Shop> if all esle fails...
[22:55:05] <archivist> but a while... is probably more sensible in a loop :)
[22:55:35] * JT-Shop seems to remember goto from a previous lifetime atari maybe
[22:56:04] <archivist> I still meet goto !
[22:56:06] <Aero-Tec> does EMC have goto?
[22:56:18] <jdhNC> goto is quite useful, in moderation.
[22:56:37] <JT-Shop> Aero-Tec: no

[22:59:45] <archivist> gcode is like assembler but worse and has no goto
[23:01:15] <JT-Shop> LOL
[23:01:36] <FinboySlick> I like assembler.
[23:02:09] <archivist> assembler has better variable syntax !
[23:02:59] <FinboySlick> Heh, if it were like C, could you malloc() more material on the part? That would be useful sometimes.
[23:03:37] <archivist> and goto the other side to get more work done

[23:31:04] <tjb1> Anyone here fluent in data sheets and optocouplers?
[23:33:18] <JT-Shop> tjb1: tip of the day... just ask your question
[23:33:23] <alex4nder-> yes
[23:33:25] <tjb1> http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/motorola/4N26.pdf
[23:33:27] <alex4nder-> questions are good to ask
[23:33:35] <alex4nder-> what about it?
[23:33:56] <tjb1> What voltage can I run through the collector? non-led side
[23:34:49] <djdelorie> VCEO is 30 volts
[23:34:49] <alex4nder-> Vceo is 30 volts
[23:34:54] <alex4nder-> jinx
[23:35:10] <djdelorie> but it's the 150 mA limit you're more likely to be interested in
[23:35:33] <tjb1> So what does the E-C and C-B voltages mean?
[23:35:37] <djdelorie> VCEO is the max voltage when the opto is *off*, Ic is the max amps when it's *on*
[23:36:13] <djdelorie> Most optos, the base isn't connected so doesn't matter
[23:36:24] <tjb1> Sorry, Veco and Vcbo
[23:36:30] <djdelorie> VECO is the max *reverse* voltage (i.e. collector has -7 volts on it)
[23:37:00] <tjb1> and for an optocoupler to work each side needs its own power supply?
[23:37:24] <tjb1> Well for it to properly isolate
[23:37:32] <djdelorie> yes
[23:38:03] <djdelorie> the fundamental transfer is: for some current A through the led, you get some (higher) current B through the transistor (Ice)
[23:38:28] <tjb1> and what voltage can I use for the LED?
[23:38:56] <alex4nder-> tjb1: whatever it is you're trying to do, I'd run the design by someone before you even decide this is the right combinations of parts to do what you want.
[23:39:06] <tjb1> Max forward voltage of 1.5 and max 60 mA current
[23:39:08] <CareBear\> tjb1 : see "forward voltage"
[23:39:18] <CareBear\> tjb1 : so 1.5 V
[23:39:22] <JT-Shop> how can you continue a line in javascript?
[23:39:41] <tjb1> Im using this as an ohmic sensor on the tip of plasma to isolate it from the g540
[23:39:41] <djdelorie> again, wrong question. It's "what CURRENT do I put through the LED"
[23:39:46] <CareBear\> both
[23:39:47] <alex4nder-> tjb1: you just need to current-limit the LED
[23:40:59] <tjb1> So using a 12v supply I would Need a 200 ohm resistor
[23:41:56] <alex4nder-> compensate for tolerances
[23:42:01] <djdelorie> Given Given a preferred If of 20 mA, and 1.15 Vf, you need a resistor that drops 10.85V at 0.020 A = 542 ohms
[23:42:20] <djdelorie> er, 10 mA is preferred = 1085 ohms
[23:42:27] <alex4nder-> you don't just set everything to max and cross fingers.
[23:42:47] <djdelorie> yeah, max is "just before it explodes". You want the next page
[23:42:59] <alex4nder-> also optos are notoriously shitty at being linear, and they age.
