[00:01:53] <Tom_itx> lathe anyone?
[00:03:08] <andypugh> "I used this lathe 1 time,with 110 v motor, and everything worked" I wonder why he stopped?
[00:04:03] <andypugh> But it does look nice, you can still see the frosting.
[00:04:44] <Tom_itx> vintage 14 x 72" also for $500
[00:04:56] <Tom_itx> celtic
[00:06:52] <Tom_itx> mori seki for $29k
[00:07:45] <andypugh> Curious tailstock on the Kerry, not seen that before.

[00:11:03] <Tom_itx> i've never seen one

[01:10:13] <andypugh> Same milll as mine. I want the slotting head. I don't want all of it though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170853001738
[01:13:18] <Tom_itx> the collet or the rotary table?
[01:14:05] <andypugh> the slotter
[01:14:23] <Tom_itx> i've got a small one for my sherline
[01:14:35] <Tom_itx> i don't think i've used it yet
[01:14:47] <Tom_itx> i got some used slitting saws that fit it though
[01:14:51] <andypugh> Oh, I doubt I would ever _use_ it!
[01:15:04] <andypugh> ?
[01:15:38] <andypugh> Are we talking at srossed porpoises?
[01:15:57] <Tom_itx> ?
[01:16:17] <andypugh> On the table of that miller is a slotting head. That has no relationship to slitting saws.
[01:17:16] <Tom_itx> on the left side?
[01:18:12] <Jymmm> andypugh: I think I've asked you a few times but missed if you ever responded about the mobo
[01:18:23] <andypugh> Tom_itx: Yes
[01:18:50] <andypugh> Jymmm: Go on?
[01:18:55] <Tom_itx> ok i was looking at the collet on the right
[01:19:08] <Jymmm> andypugh: Are you unhappy with the mobo?
[01:19:19] <andypugh> which one?
[01:19:31] <Jymmm> newest DC one
[01:19:49] <andypugh> I haven't got it working yet, no memory.
[01:20:17] <andypugh> it looks promising though.
[01:20:33] <Jymmm> andypugh: Oh, I thought I saw you taking to someone (pcw?) about it and you had seemed a tad disappointed.
[01:20:37] <andypugh> It also has Mystery Ports not on the sticker, with many pins.
[01:20:49] <Jymmm> andypugh: LVDS?
[01:20:52] <Tom_itx> andy i thought that was a rotary head
[01:21:23] <andypugh> Well, I bought it thinking that PCIe to PCI was easy, when in fact it is hard. But then a 6i25 appeared, and all is good again.
[01:21:45] <Jymmm> andypugh: It has LVDS, RS232,422,485 selectable, paraport,
[01:22:15] <andypugh> LVDS might be interesting, I have an LVDS touchscreen.
[01:22:34] <Tom_itx> that broken screen i have is LVDS
[01:23:43] <Jymmm> andypugh: iirc, it also have 6 GPIO pins on an 8 pin header
[01:24:01] <andypugh> Hmm, I wonder why?
[01:24:10] <Jymmm> System intergration
[01:24:16] <Jymmm> embedded
[01:25:01] <andypugh> It is remarkably thin
[01:26:30] <Jymmm> It also has backlight control for the lcd
[01:27:21] <Tom_itx> http://www2.electronicproducts.com/Transparent_double_sided_smartphone_demonstrated_at_2012_Wireless_Japan_expo_video-article-fajb_transparent_phone_jun2012-html.aspx
[01:30:07] <Jymmm> andypugh: I take that back, I might have been confusing which mobo had the GPIO pins
[01:31:03] <Jymmm> andypugh: Technical product specs http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CGsQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownloadmirror.intel.com%2F20714%2Feng%2FDN2800MT_TechProdSpec02.pdf&ei=56XST9nhCqnO2AXj8sW5Dw&usg=AFQjCNFUtUTLNasgpEt02mJC0UQF9rnu1Q
[01:33:11] <Jymmm> andypugh: That also has part numbers for the connectors
[01:36:34] <andypugh> Sorry, distracted
[01:37:53] <andypugh> How the heck do I make Xp realise that its fisk just got a lot bigger?
[01:38:12] <Jymmm> ?
[01:38:30] <Jymmm> did you resize a partition? new hdd?
[01:39:00] <andypugh> The latter, mainly. Sort of.
[01:39:10] <Jymmm> what was it, what should it be now, what does it think it is
[01:39:37] <andypugh> wa 30GB, now 200GB, thinks it is 30GB
[01:39:58] <Jymmm> sata or ide?
[01:41:20] <andypugh> SCSI. Or so it thinks. It's a VM
[01:41:54] <Jymmm> Is the VM setup to expand as needed?
[01:42:32] -!- Thetawaves [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[01:43:17] <andypugh> It's complicated. And I am making it more so.
[01:43:25] <Jymmm> lol
[01:43:35] <Jymmm> you have fun with that then =)
[01:43:56] <andypugh> It was set to expand, but got to its limit. So I increased the limit, but XP hasn't noticed.
[01:44:27] <Jymmm> did you shutdown the VM completely and restart your computer?
[01:45:03] <Jymmm> not pause, but a full shut down of the vm
[01:45:18] <andypugh> I restarted the VM. Restarting the host seems unnecesary?
[01:45:36] <Jymmm> Not restart, shut down.
[01:45:57] <Jymmm> that's power off, pause, power on.
[01:46:03] <andypugh> Yes, I had to.
[01:46:36] <andypugh> In fact I cloed the VM so that it could be it's own helper VM to mount and resize it's partition..

[01:51:52] <andypugh> No.

[01:54:56] <andypugh> Now the original VM is in a boot/close down loop. Which is musical, but annoying.
[01:55:07] <Jymmm> heh
[01:56:03] <Jymmm> Did you shut down XP properly before resizing?
[01:56:04] <andypugh> I had nevr heard of Kerry lathes until this evening, and now there is one on eBay uk too.
[01:56:15] <andypugh> Jyhmm
[01:56:19] <andypugh> Jymmm: Ys
[01:56:21] <andypugh> Yes
[01:56:23] <Jymmm> k
[01:56:29] <andypugh> VMware enforces thay
[01:56:31] <andypugh> that
[01:56:59] <Jymmm> You have to or XP NTFS will seriously bitch and not boot
[01:57:22] <Jymmm> has nothign to do with VM in the least
[01:57:53] <andypugh> Hmm, now what.
[01:58:35] <Jymmm> shut down your VM host software?
[02:00:00] <andypugh> Not hopeful
[02:05:44] <Jymmm> As I dont know what yoursetup is or what your did, I'm out of ideas
[02:05:57] <andypugh> Yeah, me too.
[02:06:08] <andypugh> But sleep is high on the list
[02:06:26] <Jymmm> or tequilia =)
[02:07:28] <andypugh> Lets see if a Ubuntu VM can rescue the data at least
[02:08:59] <Tom_itx> i feel a lathe in andy's future

[03:38:01] <mozmck> andypugh: you have to boot from a gparted ISO image and resize the partition. I've done this with VMware and VirtualBox.
[04:05:50] -!- i_tarzan has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[04:11:07] <Jymmm> mozmck: So when he resized the VM space, it allocated it as "free space" instead of the existing partition?
[04:12:03] <Jymmm> I guess that makes sense. You would have thought it would have given an option of how to allocate it.
[04:14:01] <Jymmm> mozmck: But I don't think that explains why the xp vm is trying to reboot upon startup. Unless the resize fubared the MBR, but I dont know how andypugh did the resizing either.

[11:05:38] <Loetmichel> ... *twinkle* bah, i have overdone it again... thats WAY to bright ;-)
[11:17:44] <andypugh> Hmm, so, Gparted thinks that the virtual disk is one 200GB partition. Windows XP (installed in it) thinks it is 40GB. I don't see a way round this.
[11:19:26] <archivist> Loetmichel, add some opalescent sheet behind the red to scatter the light a bit

[11:22:16] <archivist> add sheets till ok :)
[11:23:08] <archivist> actually some distance would help led to front
[11:23:32] <Loetmichel> i will try to fill the segment pockets with opaque melting glue
[11:23:50] <Loetmichel> and maybe add a second 3mm layer of grey frame
[11:25:33] <Loetmichel> btw: thats roughly 300mm of digit height
[11:28:33] <Loetmichel> sorry, wrong window
[11:34:40] <andypugh> Any ideas chaps? The partition is 200GB but the C drive is 30GB. Gparted gave the same info, this is a Windows tool that I am trying too. http://imagebin.org/215748

[13:07:57] <andypugh> micges: The problem is that XP only thinks it has 40GB, but everything else thinks it is a 200GB partition.
[13:08:37] <andypugh> r00t4rd3d: How big is it?

[13:24:22] <Jymmm> band strap wrench of some sort maybe?
[13:24:53] <andypugh> micges: mozmck: Got it, the trick was to first shring the partition to the apparent, then increase it back up…
[13:25:58] <archivist> I dont have one of those in my collection yet :)
[13:26:41] <archivist> r00t4rd3d, close up of the label?
[13:27:18] <mozmck> andypugh: that's interesting. I resized my virtual disk first with vmware, and windows still thought it was the old size.
[13:28:02] <ScribbleJ> mozmck, no, it's that you resised the disk but not the file system.
[13:28:09] <andypugh> Yes, I had the same problem, but in my case gparted thought it was already the new size
[13:28:13] <mozmck> then when I booted from the gparted ISO it saw a larger disk with the smaller partition.
[13:28:23] <ScribbleJ> You can change the size of the partition however you like and that's not going to change the size of the filesystem one bit.
[13:28:58] <andypugh> I had a semi-succesful attempt with diskpart in XP from a clone of the original disk..
[13:29:10] <mozmck> ScribbleJ: I'm aware of that. I resized the *disk*, and then resized the partition using gparted and it worked perfectly.
[13:30:06] <ScribbleJ> OK, you say you're aware of it but I just want to be clear... you can resize the 'disk' and the 'partition' and you still need to resize the 'filesystem' too.
[13:30:31] <ScribbleJ> resizing the partition is not the last step and if it was the last thing you did, it will produce exactly the symptom you describe.
[13:30:37] <archivist> r00t4rd3d, and the place to search is http://www.datamp.org/
[13:30:46] <andypugh> It was the filesystem I was struggling with. XP (under Vmware 4) is _meant_ to automatically increase the filesystem.
[13:31:00] <ScribbleJ> I've never heard that.
[13:31:12] <ScribbleJ> I'm skeptical, but I'll admit I'm no Windows user.
[13:31:45] <andypugh> I try not to be.
[13:31:49] <mozmck> Ok, well I'm not sure what you mean there. How do you resize the file system? I've done it just like I said about a dozen times with dual boot systems, and twice with a VM.
[13:32:35] <ScribbleJ> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS#Resizing <- Andy, added in 7 but not really useable.
[13:32:40] <mozmck> I just resize the partition and XP,Vista, Win7 runs a scandisk on the first boot and gives me the new size.
[13:33:21] <ScribbleJ> mozmck, this is how I've resized ntfs in the past, but you have many options. I think gparted even has an option to do it.
[13:33:25] <ScribbleJ> Since you mentioned that earlier
[13:33:26] <mozmck> This is all outside of windows completely. I boot from a Linux ISO or CD that has Gparted on it.

[13:34:33] <mozmck> I guess Gparted does that all automatically when resizing a partition. Glad you got it working andy.

[13:43:28] <Jymmm> SWPadnos: The jetway has 6 internal, 3 front
[13:43:48] <SWPadnos> I found some SATA DOM (Disk On Module) that look good, 32GB is $85 or so
[13:44:03] <SWPadnos> yeah, I need 4 "front" ports
[13:44:04] <SWPadnos> or more
[13:44:09] <Jymmm> ah
[13:44:16] <SWPadnos> since I have custom cables to connect to the cameras
[13:44:31] <SWPadnos> uh-oh - my wife says the food's getting cold. bbiab (maybe :) )
[13:44:38] <mrsun> would casted alu parts stand up to the forces bending sheet metal ... hmm =)
[13:44:51] <Jymmm> SWPadnos: Well if you have custom cables, shouldn't be an issue. enjoy the grub!
[13:45:24] <norias> mrsun: think it depends alot on the design and directions of the forces

[13:46:35] <Jymmm> andypugh: That's the one with the 6 GPIO on it too.
[13:47:24] <andypugh> DN2800 has a "System Integration" port.
[13:47:44] <Tom_itx> Jymmm, you seem to like jetway boards
[13:47:58] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: it has 6 sata ports
[13:48:26] <Tom_itx> my older mb had 4 but only 2 work reliably at once
[13:48:55] <Jymmm> 6 sata + INTEL gig nics
[13:49:06] <Jymmm> perfect combo for NAS box
[13:50:00] <Jymmm> well, almost perfect. Perfect would be ECC ram.

[15:01:45] <Loetmichel> norias: hmm?
[15:02:03] <norias> i've been just sorta hanging out the past couple days
[15:02:06] <Tom_itx> or machining with computers
[15:02:10] <norias> and i see alot of computer talk
[15:02:13] <norias> less machining
[15:02:22] <norias> which is all well and cool, not a complaint
[15:02:26] <norias> just an observation
[15:02:35] <Loetmichel> maybe thats because of this channel being about a linuxCNC solution?
[15:02:43] <Tom_itx> it's about the hardware and software to do the machining
[15:02:45] <norias> yeah. makes sense
[15:02:47] <Loetmichel> COMPUTER numerical controlled ;-)
[15:03:03] <norias> i just used to work in shops with lots of machinists to chat with
[15:03:09] <norias> and now it's just me and an apprentice
[15:03:18] <norias> so most of the talking is... one directional
