[00:00:14] <Tom_itx> andypugh is yours the mega328?
[00:00:16] <andypugh> Jymmm: I have a gnd wire. Yes. But they are shared elsewhere too.
[00:00:23] <andypugh> No, Uno
[00:00:42] <Tom_itx> right but what is the main chip?
[00:00:57] <Jymmm> jthornton: Miss July gave us a private show

[00:05:08] <andypugh> As that is the one I have a datasheet for
[00:05:49] <Tom_itx> 328?
[00:06:10] <Tom_itx> that's one of the more common ones now
[00:07:40] <andypugh> Yes, 328. I must have the wrong datasheet :-)

[00:09:48] <andypugh> Oh, I just realised, I was wrong. Mine is a Duemillenova (ATmega328p)
[00:10:43] <Tom_itx> they're all relatively the same code wise
[00:11:37] <Tom_itx> the U4 would be another good choice as it has onboard adc

[00:31:11] <Nick001> Back with that multiple spindle question including 1 or 2 of them doing rigid tapping. can it be done in axis?
[00:35:05] <skunkworks__> rigid tapping? that is a linuxcnc thing - not really a UI thing
[00:35:42] <Nick001> UI -- ?
[00:35:53] <skunkworks__> user interface - like axis
[00:36:05] <skunkworks__> unless I am miss-understanding your question

If you want to use for example, M3.1, M4.1 to start and stop spindles then it's a bit more tricky. If you want to overload the S word to set more than one spindle speed, then I have no idea how you would do it.

[13:52:51] <Jymmm> jdh: It can do some great things, you just really have to get used to it.
[13:53:45] <Jymmm> It had been used to visually inventory every rack in the datacenter

[13:56:02] <Jymmm> 120 racks
[13:56:23] <joe9> http://codepad.org/AGkDr5nW any thoughts on this error?
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Following_Error says that it is a .ini file error. but, even after changing the ini file, I am not able to figure it out.
[13:56:42] <joe9> error message: "joint 0 following error"
[13:56:44] <jdh> the local community college has a sketchup class. It was very informative and I became proficient, but stopped using it.
[13:57:34] <skunkworks> joe9, can you post your ini?
[13:57:47] <joe9> skunkworks: sure.
[13:58:07] <skunkworks> usually it is that you do not have enough headroom between the stepgen accelleratoin and the joint accelleration
[13:58:18] <joe9> http://codepad.org/ORru0HPx skunkworks.
[13:58:44] <skunkworks> hal?
[13:59:06] <jdh> joe9:did you recently change any config options?
[13:59:12] <joe9> http://codepad.org/LT7yaOSV .hal file
[13:59:41] <joe9> http://codepad.org/KK6AqtLs custom.hal file
[13:59:46] <joe9> skunkworks, ^^
[14:00:01] <joe9> jdh: yes, I was trying to increase the base period setting
[14:00:07] <joe9> from 25000 to 28000
[14:00:09] <jdh> increase or decrease?
[14:00:24] <joe9> as at 25000, I was getting the RTAPI error.
[14:00:40] <joe9> jdh: increased it from 25000 -> 28000
[14:01:01] <joe9> first tried 50000, same joint error, then tried 28000
[14:01:07] <jdh> sounds like your step rate is too high for that base period
[14:01:14] <skunkworks> when do you get the folloing error? moving at high speed?
[14:01:26] <skunkworks> (agreeing with jdh )
[14:01:28] <joe9> skunkworks: while "Home all"
[14:01:40] <joe9> skunkworks: it homes z-axis and y-axis fine
[14:01:57] <joe9> when it is homing the x-axis, it finishes the homing and just before stopping, it gives that error.
[14:02:56] <skunkworks> because it rapids to the actual home position I would guess...
[14:03:24] <skunkworks> HOME_OFFSET = 12.000
[14:03:37] <skunkworks> lower your max velocity
[14:03:49] <jdh> drop vel/accel a bit and see if it goes away
[14:04:48] <skunkworks> 40000 scale is quite high - that is going to limit your max velocity with software step generation
[14:04:49] <joe9> on just the x-axis or both the x and y axes?
[14:04:57] <jdh> X first
[14:05:05] <jdh> then see if the error moves to joint 2
[14:05:07] <joe9> skunkworks: how do I find the "correct" scale?
[14:05:16] <skunkworks> I am going to guess on all - as your scale is the same for all axis.
[14:05:19] <jdh> same velocity though so i tshoudl show up there
[14:05:20] <r00t4rd3d> is an "over head gantry" one that moves
[14:05:54] <joe9> I use the gecko g540 and KL23H276-30-8B.pdf
[14:05:56] <r00t4rd3d> i hate when i have to ask dumb questions
[14:05:59] <joe9> with a taig machine.
[14:06:10] <jdh> you slowed your base period 11%, I'd try kocking that much off max vel
[14:06:18] <joe9> ok, thanks.
[14:06:38] <jdh> joe9: or get a mesa 5i25
[14:06:52] <joe9> jdh: my max velocity is 0.95. do you still think it is a bit high?
[14:06:59] <skunkworks> I don't think you can change the microstepping on the geckos.. So you are stuck
[14:07:08] <joe9> with the step rate, it is ending up to be high. -- you mean?
[14:07:27] <jdh> yoru scale is what it is. You have to work within that limit
[14:07:31] <skunkworks> try .8 for all axis
[14:07:49] <jdh> or do the math
[14:08:04] <skunkworks> you could bump that up until you start getting following errors again. If I was more energetic - we could do the math.
[14:08:05] <jdh> but. .8 should work.
[14:08:06] <skunkworks> heh
[14:08:56] <joe9> skunkworks: ok, doing that. Thanks.
[14:09:03] <skunkworks> let us know
[14:09:38] <skunkworks> but yes - investing in a 5i25 would let you go as fast as the mechanics would allow
[14:09:54] <joe9> btw, the comment character for the .ini file. is it # or ;? it seems to be #, according to what is generated?
[14:09:55] <jdh> 5i25 will get rid of the following error and the rtapi
[14:10:22] <joe9> what is 5i25? let me google that? another hardware piece?
[14:10:45] <jdh> mesanet pci card. You can plug your g540 straight in to it
[14:10:57] <jdh> and it has another port for additional IO
[14:11:30] <skunkworks> plus you can get daughter boards that do a ton more
[14:11:38] <joe9> cool, 0.85 -- no error.
[14:11:50] <anonimas1> it's the best thing I ever bought for my setup :)
[14:12:08] <skunkworks> Great and great ;)
[14:12:46] <joe9> how much is it? where did you get it from? that seems to be a cool idea? does that mean I can put the cnc on any machine? or, does it still have to be within the latency principles?
[14:13:02] <anonimas1> mesanet.com
[14:13:18] <jdh> $90ish
[14:13:20] <anonimas1> it means you can push your hardware to as fast as your motors will allow
[14:13:25] <joe9> anonimas1: thanks, will check up on it.
[14:13:38] <anonimas1> i think most people here went with that kind of setup
[14:13:43] <skunkworks> joe9, your max_linear_veilocity in the traj section should be 1.5
[14:14:03] <jdh> I got a 7i43, before 5i25 came out :(
[14:14:10] <anonimas1> it pretty much means unlimited step rates(also you can stick your microstepping on max and still reach max speed)
[14:14:14] <skunkworks> sqr(.85^2+.85^2+.85^2)

[18:12:18] <JessicaRN> andy, yeah, I need to keep the data because it's not my setup. it's a friends. he has had it in storage for like 3 years
[18:12:58] <JessicaRN> I'm debating on dropping a different HD in it and just starting from scratch
[18:13:34] <JessicaRN> So, how does EMC2 compare w/ MACH3?
[18:14:35] <jdh> let's talk about religion instead
[18:14:46] <tjb1> Ones for stupid, ones for smart :)

[18:18:52] <JessicaRN> but, serious, folks. what are your thoughts
[18:20:20] <tjb1> Im serious
[18:20:31] <jdh> think about where you are, then think about what kind of response you expect to get here.
[18:20:35] <tjb1> One is for people that know all about computers and linux
[18:20:52] <jdh> I disagree with that statement.
[18:21:18] <tjb1> You need a pretty strong grasp of linux to use linuxcnc
[18:21:27] <tjb1> Well not use it…to do more than just use it
[18:21:37] <JessicaRN> actually, from an informed and intelligent audience, I would hope to get and informed and thoughful response. we're not fundimentalists, are we?
[18:22:04] <alex4nder> I am.
[18:22:08] <JessicaRN> lordy
[18:22:48] <JessicaRN> fundies from any group are scary.
[18:23:04] <jdh> yep.
[18:23:15] <pcw_home> sorry you are wrong and will go to hell
[18:23:41] <JessicaRN> i don't like to drink the kool-aid. I like to make an informed decision. So, in that light will someone kindly offer their thoughts?
[18:24:05] <alex4nder> JessicaRN: I'm thinking about buying a burrito
[18:24:11] <alex4nder> that's my current thought.
[18:24:31] <JessicaRN> pcw, I'm a Catholic lesbian. I already know I'm going to hell. I'll have a lot of fun before I get there though.
[18:24:34] <alex4nder> JessicaRN: do you want to know if you should run EMC or not?
[18:24:46] <archivist> you are trying to compare a hammer with an engineers toolkit
[18:25:15] <jdh> good description.
[18:25:29] <jdh> but, you can get a lot done with a hammer.
[18:25:40] <archivist> but it looks bent
[18:25:50] <alex4nder> JessicaRN: EMC works, but don't expect to not have to work to use it.

[18:26:02] <alex4nder> it works great.
[18:26:06] <JessicaRN> see, that is an extremists statement. if you feed g-code to either tool they will run a mill. there is not -that- much difference. and, if there is, please just offer some points to support your statement. that's all i'm asking for.
[18:26:14] <alex4nder> and sometimes drills holes in your mill-table on accident.
[18:26:30] <archivist> emc can do whatever you want, may need to think a bit though

[18:27:24] <JessicaRN> are you a republican just cuz your dad told you to vote that way?
[18:27:33] <JessicaRN> or do you make your own decisions?
[18:27:43] <archivist> JessicaRN, you can extend emc, make your own kins for special machines etc
[18:27:43] <alex4nder> well I'd start by learning about politics.
[18:27:47] <JessicaRN> I'm asking for an informed and intelligent argument
[18:28:01] <alex4nder> JessicaRN: there's no argument.. go use Mach3 if you want
[18:28:19] <jdh> if mach does all you need, then it doesn't really matter.
[18:28:21] <JessicaRN> and, alex, I'm asking you about the pros and cons of emc vs mach3. I'm trying to become informed.
[18:28:28] <archivist> it has realtime feedback so is a better machine control
[18:28:53] <JessicaRN> archivist: thank you. finally, a data point
[18:28:57] <alex4nder> JessicaRN: if this were religious, I think most of LinuxCNC users would be buddhists.
[18:29:01] <jdh> it has closed look control
[18:29:03] <pcw_home> Yeah IMHO LinuxCNC is flexible, open, powerful but not terribly polished Mach is commercial/closed windows only ,fairly polished
[18:29:05] <pcw_home> LinuxCNC make a lot of the real time guts available for extension, Mach has only minimal reall time capabilities (just the software step generation I believe)
[18:29:47] <JessicaRN> thank you again... that is the kind of thing I was asking for.
[18:30:00] <alex4nder> do you even understand what any of that means?
[18:30:06] <JessicaRN> how stable is the current EMC compared to mach?
[18:30:22] <archivist> emc can drive up to 9 axes at the same time
[18:30:24] <JessicaRN> alex, you are a condecending little pud

[18:33:21] <jdh> this sounds like most #linux windows conversations of the last 20 years
[18:33:27] <alex4nder> haha
[18:34:18] <JessicaRN> actually, a conversation would be nice. I wasn't asking about linux vs windows. I was asking about two specific apps
[18:34:31] <jdh> it's pretty much the same conversation though
[18:34:41] <jdh> for about the same reasons
[18:34:47] <pcw_home> Because Mach depends on external hardware for real time (beyond simple step generation)
[18:34:49] <pcw_home> advanced function like rigid taping and threading are interface hardware dependent
[18:34:51] <pcw_home> (the hardware must handle the synchronization)
[18:34:52] <pcw_home> LinuxCNC does all these advance functions in real time software so they work with any interface hardware (in the same way)

[18:36:48] <JessicaRN> with a simple mill like the fireballl, it has minimal feedback. really all it has is limit switches. so, that is a strength in some environments, but not in this one. correct?
[18:36:54] <jdh> linux and/or linuxcnc is technically superior, windows and/or mach3 is prettier and arguably easier to use
[18:37:46] <JessicaRN> I agree, jdh, but there is a point you forget. linux support tends to suck.
[18:37:49] <jdh> for a router like that, I don't think either of them is inherently better.
[18:38:09] <jdh> I would disagree with that also.

[18:38:47] <JessicaRN> with a commercial product like mach, the publisher has to support it or they get a bad rep. for EMC, I'll need to ask help from the likes of alex... ugh!

[18:43:12] <jdh> windows definitely wins for CAM
[18:43:23] <tjb1> The map is pretty cool
[18:43:49] <JT-Shop> OneCNC is getting better
[18:44:16] <andypugh> One advantage of LinuxCNC is that if it doesn't have a feature you want you don't have to persuade the developer to add it for you, you can add it yourself, or get any other programmer to do it for you.
[18:44:17] <JessicaRN> Well, I can create the gcode on anything and just send it over to the machine that runs the mill. so platform is irrelevant
[18:44:49] <JessicaRN> OneCNC?
[18:45:01] <JT-Shop> cam program
[18:45:07] <andypugh> LinuxCNC is also rather more modular, For example you can use only the HAL layer to do simple things like driving steppers.

[21:59:37] <Tom_itx> it's installable within linuxcnc

[23:27:31] <andypugh> You could make M100 = spindle 2 on at 3000 rpm.
[23:28:13] <andypugh> Actually, you could probably use M100 1 3000 to set spindle 1 to 3000, and M100 1 0 to stop it.

[23:32:30] <Nick001-Shop> using a 2000 line encoder on that spindle - can linuxcnc handle that directly or would I need to use a mesa like card
[23:33:13] <andypugh> Nick001-Shop: It can handle it directly. At low speed
[23:33:36] <Nick001-Shop> like how slow?
[23:33:39] <andypugh> By low, I mean hundreds of rpms
[23:34:21] <Nick001-Shop> ouch - need 900-2000 rpm from each spindle
[23:35:05] <Nick001-Shop> tapping would be at 600 - 1200 rpm
[23:36:02] <cpresser> 600 rpm = 10rps = 20k pulses/sec that might be to fast for the parallel-port
[23:36:15] <andypugh> 2000 rpm * 8000 counts / 60 seconds is 250kHz. That's well into Mesa/Pico territory. No choice.
