[00:01:23] <Nick001-Shop> do you have another card that will work?
[00:03:41] <Nick001-Shop> Dinner time - will be back 1 hr - --

[00:20:11] <andypugh> Nick001: For the absolute easiest setup (at a cost) a 5i25 card and a G540
[00:20:30] <andypugh> Ah, he left
[00:20:54] <Tom_itx> the 540 has spindle control too doesn't it?
[00:21:01] <andypugh> Yes
[00:21:14] <PCW> The 7I32 is funny as it really designed for stepmotors with feedback and SoftDMC
[00:21:15] <Tom_itx> that's what i'm lacking
[00:21:25] -!- jstenback has quit [Quit: ZNC - http://znc.in]
[00:21:43] <Tom_itx> is it feasable to do rigid tapping with steppers?
[00:21:55] <PCW> so its has both angle and current setting from host
[00:22:09] <PCW> I dont see why not
[00:22:16] <Tom_itx> i'm not sure a sherline spindle can be reversed though
[00:22:25] <andypugh> If Nick001 has another use for the 5i20, perhaps he would be better with a 5i25 / 7i77 / G540 combo?
[00:22:34] -!- ve7it [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:22:41] <andypugh> Though the G540 is overkill for 1A steppers.
[00:23:02] <Tom_itx> what's a good durable driver for 1A ish steppers?
[00:23:04] -!- jstenback [jstenback!~jstenback@2620:101:8003:200:224:e8ff:fe39:34c2] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:23:05] <Tom_itx> ie NEMA17
[00:23:16] <PCW> Yeah although it looks like one machine and only 1A step motors
[00:23:17] <Tom_itx> maybe 2A
[00:23:18] -!- jstenback has quit [Client Quit]
[00:23:48] <PCW> does Leadshine make a small drive?
[00:23:54] <andypugh> Tom_itx: Leadshines are fine
[00:23:58] -!- jstenback [jstenback!~jstenback@2620:101:8003:200:224:e8ff:fe39:34c2] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:24:03] <andypugh> You can throtthe down...
[00:24:44] <PCW> I'll look at the possibility of supporting the 7I32 with the stepgen
[00:25:02] <Tom_itx> what card is it?
[00:25:09] <Tom_itx> haven't looked at that one
[00:25:35] -!- jstenback has quit [Client Quit]
[00:26:03] <PCW> Its really designed for close loop stepmotors and SoftDMC but I think I could hack the stepgen to work with it
[00:26:45] <andypugh> Tom_itx: These would be cool if they worked step/dir http://www.zappautomation.co.uk/uim24302b-self-pulsing-miniature-stepper-driver-p-557.html?cPath=9_3_4
[00:27:21] -!- r00t-Shed [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:27:28] <Tom_itx> for a closed end stepper yeah
[00:27:32] <andypugh> Actually, for Nick001 those _are_ ideal as they work on analogue voltage, so make his steppers into servos. (sort of)
[00:28:05] <andypugh> He has glass scales for feedback, I think he said.
[00:28:25] <Tom_itx> what form factor is it? 17 or 23?
[00:28:35] -!- Valen [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:28:36] <andypugh> 17, but there are 23 adapters
[00:28:51] -!- jstenback [jstenback!~jstenback@2620:101:8003:200:224:e8ff:fe39:34c2] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:29:25] <Tom_itx> what's self pulsing mean?
[00:29:33] <andypugh> Definitely worth pointing him at those when he gets back, perfect for what he has, I reckon.
[00:29:51] <andypugh> Tom_itx: It means that they create their own step-dir signals.
[00:30:09] <Tom_itx> what controls the step speed then?
[00:31:10] <andypugh> The things listed in the web page?
[00:31:31] <Tom_itx> DAC output?
[00:32:28] <andypugh> http://www.zappautomation.co.uk/uim24002-miniature-stepper-driver-p-8.html is more conventional, 23 sized, step-dir. Not as good for Nick001
[00:33:34] <andypugh> This is what I was really looking for, standard Leadshine-style stepper drive. Perfectly OK and running my machine fine.
[00:33:40] <andypugh> http://www.zappautomation.co.uk/pm542-microstepping-driver-p-5.html?cPath=9_3_4
[00:33:56] <andypugh> And yes, you can rigid-tap with steppers.
[00:34:12] <andypugh> OK, I need to sleep.
[00:34:19] <Tom_itx> later

[01:10:54] <Nick001> is there a US supplier for the UIM24302B? Also ,will it handle steppers with 4 wires?
[01:12:12] <Nick001> Lots of questions - stepper with encoders - will LCNC correst the position or will it stop the movement?
[01:12:23] <Nick001> correct
[01:13:01] <Tom_itx> http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/uim24302.html
[01:13:03] <Tom_itx> china
[01:17:29] <Nick001> I'll look further into that one - china getting expensive with the shipping charges.
[01:30:14] <PCW> you can use stepmotors with encoders as a velocity mode servo
[01:30:16] <PCW> It can still stall if you exceed its capabilities but it is possible to get
[01:30:18] <PCW> better accuracy than a bare stepmotor this way
[01:33:31] <PCW> This does require a high ustep ratio (so the control loop can adjust torque vs load by adjusting usteps from the stepmotors null position)
[01:37:11] <PCW> This is all done in HAL be setting the stepgen to velocity mode and using a PID loop
[01:37:12] <PCW> you can also just fault on a stall if you like, it all depends on how you have you HAL file arranged

[12:24:59] <jerryjj> I am trying to use stepconf to enter the correct timings for my steppers. Is there a limit on the step time? If I enter anything over 5000 (even 5001) the steppers just make high frequency noise.
[12:26:53] <cpresser> jerryjj: maybe this helps: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Stepper_Drive_Timing
[12:28:08] <cpresser> there is lots of info on steppers in the wiki
[12:28:12] <r00t4rd3d> jerryjj, what controller are you using?
[12:28:39] Tom_L is now known as Tom_itx
[12:28:58] <jerryjj> OK, from that list I can see that a few drivers use longer step times.
[12:30:04] <jerryjj> I am using drivers that I made from an attiny85. They work great using GRBL, but I am using about a 10ms step time with that...
[12:32:47] <jerryjj> I can get them to run at 5000, but I can tell from how they sound that it isn't right. They are missing steps even at a very slow speed.
[12:33:55] <jdh> do you have an adequate pulse width?
[12:34:00] <cpresser> hook up a scope :)
[12:34:10] <r00t4rd3d> if your acceleration and velocity is set to high you will get weird noises too
[12:35:02] <r00t4rd3d> and i imagine with that setup those numbers should be pretty low
[12:35:46] <jdh> 10ms steps?
[12:35:59] <r00t4rd3d> "using GRBL"
[12:36:14] <jdh> does that require a paper towel tube?
[12:36:16] <jdh> nevermind.
[12:36:29] <r00t4rd3d> ha
[12:36:41] <jerryjj> Yep. I'm fairly sure the step time needs to increase just a bit more to work reliably, but as I said, when I enter 5001 or more they cease to function even at .1mm/s
