[05:15:25] <KimK> Yes indeed, "man not".
[05:16:54] <ssi> I'm still trying to get to a point where i can make the motor work
[05:17:00] <ssi> drive enable seemed to be important somehow :D
[05:18:39] <KimK> You could also just tie enable wherever it needs to go, and then do your testing.
[05:18:48] <KimK> Just for now.
[05:18:55] <ssi> well what I mean is
[05:18:58] <ssi> the motor's running constantly
[05:19:05] <ssi> and when I try to enable axis, it just instantly faults
[05:19:14] <ssi> although I guess that's more an issue of needing to set a very high ferror or sometching
[05:19:27] <ssi> anyway I should have valid enables here in just a second
[05:20:33] <KimK> The running "away" (sort of) makes sense if you're still in torque mode and there's no torque mode in any of the sample configs (and I'm assuming not).
[05:21:04] <ssi> I don't have the foggiest idea what is different about the configs for torque mode
[05:22:07] <ssi> oh wow I'm going to all this not trouble

[05:25:25] -!- karavanjo has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[05:25:34] <ssi> now then
[05:25:36] <ssi> torque mode configs
[05:25:49] <ssi> let's see what google has to say
[05:26:12] <KimK> Hey great, congrats! And the difference is that normally the drives are in velocity mode and the tach-gens close the velocity loop to the drives, Linuxcnc only closes the outer (position) loop. You might choose to have Linuxcnc close the middle (velocity) loop also.
[05:26:28] <ssi> yeah, I mostly get that in theory
[05:26:37] <ssi> but I don't really understand it from a practical perspective
[05:27:11] <ssi> so, in a velocity mode drive, the drive attempts to maintain the motor at a given velocity
[05:27:20] <ssi> so a 0v ref signal would attempt to maintain 0rpm
[05:27:31] <ssi> and a +10v ref signal would attempt to maintain some max rpm
[05:27:55] <ssi> and it uses the tachgen as feedback to increase or decrease motor voltage (or maybe current?) to attempt to maintain the speed
[05:28:36] <KimK> Yes, 0v = 0 rpm, which means the drive could be moved, but only slowly, against velocity resistance.
[05:28:39] <ssi> then linuxcnc closes the position loop by varying commanded velocity to try to keep the axis in position
[05:29:14] <KimK> Yes, exactly, you've got it.
[05:29:15] <ssi> so if I have this drive in current mode, does that mean my ref signal is a commanded current?
[05:29:53] <KimK> Yes, the reference/command signal is then a current command.
[05:30:18] <ssi> so how does that change the configuration?
[05:30:27] <ssi> I'm guessing the signal wiring is the same, but the PID tuning is different
[05:30:40] <KimK> And the feedback is the sense resistor. And the +/- 10V is proportional to whatever the current gain is scaled to.
[05:31:28] <KimK> So if your drives have a current resistor sense voltage test point, that would be useful during setup.
[05:31:42] <KimK> Or wou could use an ammeter of some kind.
[05:31:49] <KimK> s/wou/you/
[05:32:03] <ssi> Current Monitor. Analog output signal proportional to the actual current output. Scaling is 2.3 A/V. Measure relative to signal ground.
[05:32:06] <ssi> how's that?
[05:32:34] <KimK> Hey, it's just all falling into place for you.
[05:32:36] <ssi> there's also this one:
[05:32:37] <ssi> Measures the command signal to the internal current-loop. This pin has a maximum output of ±7.25 V when the drive outputs maximum peak current. Measure relative to signal ground.
[05:32:51] <ssi> it's *trickling* into place :)
[05:34:21] <KimK> You'll want to set the max current (apparently at +/- 7.5 V ?) to some maximum value according to your motor data sheets.
[05:34:53] <ssi> is that max continuous? or max peak
[05:35:39] <KimK> Ha, probably depends on whether it was written by engineering or marketing. The data sheet might give a clue.
[05:37:05] <ssi> ok this is the datasheet I have:
[05:37:06] <ssi> http://cncpd.com/pdf/SEM_MTS30_Chart.pdf
[05:37:10] <ssi> and it's an F4-52
[05:37:18] <ssi> so 52V/krpm
[05:37:33] <ssi> (which means i'll only be able to get it up just shy of 1000rpm with my paltry 48v supply that I have on hand
[05:37:48] <ssi> stall current continuous 3.4A
[05:38:12] <ssi> I'm assuming that's the number I'm shooting for
[05:39:10] <KimK> Sounds good, you can adjust it more later if there's a need. Also, you might want to set it "quickly" by watching the current sense voltage on a scope and pulsing the command voltage to take a reading. Rather than just letting everything heat up unnecessarily.
[05:39:44] <ssi> I may be able to do that
[05:39:59] <KimK> And you'll have to block the motor to get a stall.
[05:40:04] <ssi> hm
[05:40:18] <ssi> I wonder if there's a hole in the armature to allow for that
[05:40:35] <ssi> http://www.a-m-c.com/download/support/an-015.pdf
[05:40:37] <ssi> I might oughta read that
[05:42:32] -!- arekm [arekm!~arekm@pld-linux/arekm] has joined #linuxcnc

[05:54:32] <ssi> ok servo is blocked
[05:54:35] <ssi> scope is running
[05:54:54] <ssi> I gather what I need to do is send a low-freq square wave that's 0 to 10V
[05:55:05] <ssi> and trace both the command signal and the current sense
[05:55:20] <Gamma-X> kinda wackjy to just turn a driver on
[05:55:40] <KimK> If you're unable to get a 3.4A reading due to the lower than normal power supply voltage, you'll just have to command less current so you don't run out of headroom.
[05:56:40] <KimK> You don't have to use a signal generator or anything, you can just "tap" the connection when you're ready to read.
[05:57:12] <KimK> s/the connection/the selected command voltage/
[05:57:32] -!- Tecan has quit [Quit: Live Long And Phosphor!]
[05:57:53] <ssi> I have a signal gen, fwiw
[05:57:59] <ssi> not sure if that's easier

[05:59:41] <KimK> And then if you can set the upper voltage, you've got it made.
[06:00:37] <ssi> there's a LOT of noise
[06:01:02] <ssi> it's the 48v switcher I'm using I'm pretty sure

[06:48:50] <ssi> here's the weird thing
[06:48:57] <ssi> I just did it again,
[06:49:04] <ssi> if I reduce the amplitude of the square wave,
[06:49:12] <ssi> the amplitude of the current monitor waveform doesn't change
[06:49:19] <ssi> I would expect it to, yes?
[06:51:21] <GammaX> would this fit on a lathe or is it for just 4th and 5th axis on a mill?
http://www.use-enco.com/1/1/34102-a1-212-5c-eagle-rock-5c-air-collet-5c-non-indexing-collet-fixtures.html
[06:52:07] <ssi> Gamma-X: I dunno how you'd spin those air fittings :P
[06:53:13] <GammaX> this sucks
[06:53:22] <KimK_3> Since you had planned to have 140v (call it 150V) pushing the 3.4a, and since you had to use the 48v (call it 50v) instead, I'd expect your max current to be about 1/3 of 3.4a, unless I've overlooked something. Yes, if you reduce the amplitude of the command signal, the armature current should decrease.
[06:53:33] <KimK_3> Since you had planned to have 140v (call it 150V) pushing the 3.4a, and since you had to use the 48v (call it 50v) instead, I'd expect your max current to be about 1/3 of 3.4a, unless I've overlooked something. [06:53:50] <KimK_3> Sorry, I don't know what happened there.
[06:54:02] <GammaX> ssi, ill trade that air chuck for a hc closer and 5c collet set?
[06:54:17] -!- Cylly [[email protected]] has joined #linuxcnc
[06:55:49] <ssi> GammaX: I don't have anything for you, sorry
[06:57:06] -!- Loetmichel has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
[06:58:02] <KimK_3> They do seem to make a distinction between lathe collets and collet fixtures:
http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRHI?PMSECT=0000001009 plus ssi's point about the air fittings, so I'd guess those are just for holding round parts on a mill.
[06:58:06] <ssi> KimK: I'm seeing like 3v on the current monitor pin, which according to the datasheet means 7A or so
[06:58:10] <ssi> which seems very high
[06:58:49] <ssi> I'm varying the amplitude of the input signal smoothly, but the current monitor stays about the same, until i get all the way down to the minimum voltage on my signal gen
[06:58:55] <ssi> and then the current monitor drops to 0.5v
[06:59:02] <ssi> I don't understand that at all
[06:59:11] <KimK_3> Well, you could try again while letting the motor spin, that should reduce the current demand.
[06:59:30] <GammaX> is there a 3 or 4 jaw chuck that will close all 4 jaws when turning 1 screw?
[06:59:50] <KimK_3> Yes, there are both. For a lathe, you mean?
[06:59:58] <GammaX> yes
[07:00:46] <GammaX> KimK_3, can I ask for a reference on per say... ebay?
[07:00:51] <KimK_3> But four jaws are usually independent, for rework. But (rarely) they are available for producing new parts from square stock.
[07:01:39] <KimK_3> There are also 6-jaw (scroll) chucks, great on hex stock.
[07:02:00] <KimK_3> Sure, but what would you like to see from eBay?
[07:02:09] <GammaX> hopefully ill be doing only round work in the begining
[07:02:30] <GammaX> a chuck that would close all 3 jaws with the turn of one bolt
[07:02:35] <KimK_3> OK, then the classic 3 jaw should hold you for awhile.
[07:02:45] <GammaX> hmmm ok
[07:02:55] <KimK_3> What kind of spindle nose does your lathe have?
[07:03:35] <KimK_3> The back of the chuck has to fit your lathe. Or at least an adapter or faceplate that fits your lathe.
[07:03:50] <ssi> ok so I think it's doing what I expect, it's just too sensitive to input voltage
[07:04:16] -!- ravenlock has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
[07:04:27] <KimK_3> If there's a current scaling, you could try tuning it down.

[07:04:42] <GammaX> KimK_3, I have a backing plate for it. Its at the shop. ...

[07:06:27] <KimK_3> Gamma-X: OK, so you can get some kind of universal flat-back chuck and bolt it to the plate, or (better) you can get a chuck that fits your lathe like the backing plate does.
[07:06:50] <ssi> you could get the CDCO 5C chuck, it's relatively cheap
[07:06:58] <Tecan> these things are awesome for linux

[07:06:58] <ssi> I bought one and machined a backplate for my G0602
[07:07:57] <KimK_3> Gamma-X: What kind of spindle nose does your lathe have?

[07:15:32] <KimK_3> Gamma-X: Like this?
http://www.mscdirect.com/product/85029908

[07:17:21] <GammaX> ssi, correct
[07:17:22] <ssi> GammaX:
http://www.cdcotools.com/index.php
[07:17:24] <ssi> ergh
[07:17:35] <ssi> top right
[07:17:39] <ssi> $140 5c chuck
[07:17:45] <ssi> mount it on a backplate and you're good to go
[07:18:03] <ssi> KimK_3: so now I'm in a place where varying the input voltage varies the current
[07:18:39] <GammaX> hmmmm thats enticing
[07:20:42] <KimK_3> OK, sounds good. Now you need to reconfigure hal to get what you want.
[07:20:56] <ssi> I set the current limit on the drive so at max input I get right about 1.3V
[07:21:04] <ssi> which is ~3A
[07:21:19] <ssi> ok so how do I go about configuring hal for this?
[07:24:47] <KimK_3> Take a look at the diagrams on page 1 (what you have now) and page 2 (what you want):
http://www.motiontech.com.au/assets/pdf/Kollmorgen%20Tuning%20Position%20and%20Velocity%20Loops%20260712.pdf
[07:25:04] -!- stsydow has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[07:25:46] <KimK_3> You're taking the velocity loop which was external to HAL (and HAL was "unaware" of it) to internal to HAL, so HAL must be very aware of it.
[07:27:20] <GammaX> ssi, Im debating on trying to get this to work...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5c-collet-closer-tube-/261205868270?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cd1153eee
[07:27:23] <ssi> I don't really know how to translate that into signal netting
[07:27:41] <KimK_3> Instead of a velocity output to some external I/O, you'll have a torque/current output. The velocity output/input will be in the middle of HAL.
[07:27:43] <ssi> GammaX: might not be a bad place to start
[07:28:15] <ssi> KimK_3: ok I think i'm starting to fathom a bit
[07:28:23] <ssi> I already have a pid component that turns position into velocity
[07:28:32] <ssi> I'm going to need another pid component that turns that velocity signal into a current signal
[07:28:37] <GammaX> just wish I had the push pull setup on all other kinds of lathes...
[07:31:03] <KimK_3> ssi: yes, that's right
[07:33:01] <ssi> hooboy
[07:33:06] <KimK_3> Gamma-X: Are you working small jobs on small parts? Maybe you want a lever-operated collet closer? (I think they're actually collet openers, but nevermind).
[07:33:09] <ssi> this is gonna stretch my knowledge of hal a bit
[07:33:31] <ssi> also I wish I could get this machine on the network so I could install a proper vi
[07:34:41] <KimK_3> Anytime you add a component, you add it to the functions list, then add it to the desired thread, then connect it as needed.
[07:34:56] <ssi> yea I have that much at least :D
[07:35:04] <ssi> PID isn't my strong suit tho
[07:35:20] <KimK_3> You can download debs from another machine and move by flash drive maybe?
[07:35:28] <ssi> yea that'd
[07:35:29] <ssi> work
[07:35:40] <ssi> ok so do I actually want two pid components per axis?
[07:35:47] <ssi> right now I have a pid.x for instance
[07:35:57] <ssi> am I gonna want a pid.vel.x, pid.tq.x?

[07:50:53] <KimK_3> It looks like two PIDs are needed, as far as I can tell. And the other point he was making is that the velocity/current output loop may have to run at a higher speed than the usual 1ms servo loop. So it's easy enough to create a second thread running a little faster. Some experimentation and latency testing may be needed.
[07:51:53] <KimK_3> s/may be needed/may be needed to learn exactly how much faster the second loop has to run/
[07:54:47] <KimK_3> I'd guess if it was too slow that it would have to increase more than twice, so maybe 4 times faster(?) that might be enough. But if it was me, I'd let that go and just do it all in the same servo thread until I had it working and was on to "fine-tuning" (nitpicking?).
[07:57:09] <ssi> right now I'm trying to just trace through the hal and see if i can understand how the existing single pid is wired
[07:58:01] <ssi> so axis commands a position in axis.0.motor-pos-cmd
[07:58:07] <ssi> and that's wired to the pid command pin

[08:00:34] <ssi> and I get zero voltage

[08:20:43] <KimK_3> You might try the "names" feature on your PIDs, it would be a lot easier to follow "pid.Xvel.output, pid.Ypos.output, etc." as compared to the usual "pid.0.output, pid.1.output, etc."
[08:24:48] <ssi> yeah UI'm already using names

[12:46:17] <jthornton> cool
[12:46:23] <Tom_itx> i'm not happy how the timer works though
[12:46:46] <jthornton> why
[12:47:14] <Tom_itx> i'd like to capture actual spindle time and it either resets at M0 or runs thru it
[12:48:17] <jthornton> it is a cycle timer, what were you expecting?
[12:48:32] <jthornton> it resets each time you start it
[12:49:08] <Tom_itx> i can add up the times
[12:49:24] <Tom_itx> but i wanted actual spindle time
[12:49:48] <Tom_itx> without adding them up between M0
[12:50:29] <jthornton> change the component to do what you want, rename it and install it
[12:50:31] <Tom_itx> i'm displaying both right now

[12:53:11] <Tom_itx> i can tweak it with tool delays etc to get it accurate
[12:53:44] <Tom_itx> so i can look at the code output and know it's gonna take x hrs to do this job
[12:53:54] <jthornton> no, the number is a total of the rapids and feed moves only
[12:54:17] <Tom_itx> ok
[12:54:19] <jthornton> it does not take into account acceleration or trajectory planning
[12:54:41] <jthornton> the only way to get that number is to run a sim with the exact same settings as your machine
[12:54:50] <Tom_itx> true but some software had fudge factors you can get pretty close with
[12:54:52] <jthornton> and use the cycle timer...
[12:55:20] <Tom_itx> i realize every machine will run differently
[12:55:56] <Tom_itx> it's not something i really need but i thought it would be cool to have
[12:56:32] <Tom_itx> i suppose with the 2 timers you can see how lazy the operator is too
[12:56:41] <Tom_itx> how much time is spent in the M0 stop
[12:58:49] <jthornton> or just count the number of parts made
[12:59:22] <Tom_itx> i just thought it would be a nice tool for a production shop to have

[13:00:58] <Tom_itx> i was at a place where engineering would come down every so often and do time studies. everybody would slow down when they saw em coming
[13:01:13] <Tom_itx> that's true
[13:01:50] <jthornton> yep, we did the same at the shipyard... nobody move the safety guy is here so lets have a safety meeting
[13:02:19] <Tom_itx> don't get me wrong, i like this. i just always look for ways to do things different
[13:02:48] <jthornton> I understand
[13:03:31] <Tom_itx> i'm not going for high production on my sherline anyway
[13:03:32] <jthornton> you could modify the timer to record run time and stop time and have a reset button if you want as it is a dead simple comp
[13:03:47] <Tom_itx> i do have a few parts i'd like to keep track of time on though
[13:06:22] <Tom_itx> i have been getting an error once in a while when i start it up

[16:06:28] <Roguish_> Hello again. back after a long absence. I need to control 3 stepper motors (size 11). i have external encoders for position monitoring/control. QUESTION: what is the best MesaNet USB controller system/board(s)??
[16:06:28] <JT-Shop> that makes sense too
[16:06:53] <JT-Shop> none that I know of work over USB
[16:07:14] <Roguish_> does not have to be fast. just accurate
[16:08:34] <Roguish_> Serial?
[16:09:42] <L84Supper> PCIe, PCI or EPP
[16:10:15] <JT-Shop> 5i25 7i76 combo is the best bang for the buck
[16:11:06] <L84Supper> USB has too many issues to be used for real time control
[16:13:29] <Roguish_> I don't need real time control. it is running motors to position optics in an test set up. I would like to run on a laptop. How about a usb/serial converter?
[16:13:57] <L84Supper> USB could be made to work with step rates to maybe 1K/sec, but nobody has bothered to write the driver

[16:20:55] <Roguish_> no. this will be a test setup, probably in a cmm. i need to run on a laptop,
[16:21:23] <L84Supper> it would have to run really slow on a laptop to not miss steps

[16:22:43] <Roguish_> i have an actuator from harmonicdrive with a 100:1 gearing and a .5mm pitch screw. it will position a mirror to the microradian level.
[16:22:51] <L84Supper> say the battery needs a change in recharge state, the OS gets frozen in time for may 0.5 sec while the EC changes some register in the battery charger

[17:28:32] <rob__H> GammaX-Laptop,

[17:28:33] <ReadError> like the fibers now are # pattern (long and lat)

[17:28:44] <GammaX-Laptop> ReadError, yeah im deff not that strong lol
[17:28:51] <ReadError> would that provide better torsion resistance ?
[17:29:30] <GammaX-Laptop> although most companies leave te weave it its regular rate unless make some kind of tube...
[17:29:51] <rob__H> GammaX-Laptop, we use to use there tecksoft before camworks/solidworks was born so it was a upgrade path for us , we did look at other cam at the time but didt like things they did or did not do. but now all are farly even in cam terms
[17:30:23] <rob__H> some cam i find is not very production friendly but grate for a1 off quick program.. while others are the other way around
[17:30:37] <rob__H> only you realy know what you want from CAM and what works for you
[17:30:59] <GammaX-Laptop> they make cf light poles with a twist in the lay out of the weave, How its made had an episode on one.
[17:31:17] <GammaX-Laptop> rob__H, I like how its built in to solidworks... just need to get more comfortable wit it.
[17:31:36] <rob__H> does turning too :) at the time cam people said, turning & cam what u want that for lol

[19:19:49] <GammaX-Laptop> where do ou guys commonly shop for cheap tools such as taps, end mills etc...
[19:20:51] <Tom_itx> local
[19:21:07] <roycroft> i buy most of my tooling from enco
[19:21:33] <roycroft> local = 3x as expensive as enco, and the only two local shops won't take returns, even on defective product
[19:21:43] <Tom_itx> if you get good ones and take care of them the cost will average out though
[19:21:49] <roycroft> i am willing to pay more to shop locally, but not that much more, and not with such onerous terms
[19:22:05] <Tom_itx> i figure shipping is part of the tool cost too
[19:22:12] <roycroft> yes, of course
[19:22:13] <ssi> I can't seem to get any voltage on the analog outs of my 7i77 :/
[19:22:17] <ssi> not sure what I'm missing
[19:22:24] <roycroft> although enco almost always have a free shipping offer
[19:24:14] <pcw_home> Probably the analog enable pin is not set
[19:26:44] <ssi> pcw_home: I do have enables working
[19:26:46] <ssi> but I have them inverted
[19:26:48] <ssi> using the parameter
[19:26:59] <ssi> because my drives have a /INHIBIT pin
[19:27:04] <pcw_home> inverted will not work
[19:27:22] <ssi> dang
[19:27:33] <ssi> I guess I can send analogena through a not component
[19:27:39] <ssi> that was my original plan before I found the invert parameter
[19:27:43] <pcw_home> nope
[19:27:53] <ssi> no?
[19:27:54] <ssi> hm
[19:27:56] <pcw_home> you need a relay
[19:28:25] <ssi> why's that?
[19:28:28] <pcw_home> its actually a really bad design to have to make a connection to disable a drive
[19:28:33] <ssi> yeah I agree
[19:28:37] <ssi> but that's the way the drive is set up
[19:28:41] -!- mattswe has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
[19:28:56] <pcw_home> and OPTOs cannot be normally on

[19:29:42] <pcw_home> or even broke a wire
[19:30:10] <ssi> this is the drive datasheet:
[19:30:11] <ssi> http://www.a-m-c.com/download/datasheet/bx15a20.pdf

[19:31:12] <ssi> /INHIBIT: TTL level (+5 V) inhibit/enable input. Leave open to enable drive. Pull to ground to inhibit drive. Inhibit turns off all power devices.
[19:31:55] <ssi> does the 7i77 need field power in order for the analog outs to work?
[19:32:15] <pcw_home> Looks like its just TTL level with a 10K pullup so you can do it with a stiff pulldown
[19:32:30] <ssi> 1k stiff enough?
[19:32:40] <ssi> yea should be
[19:32:42] <pcw_home> yeah
[19:32:57] <pcw_home> 470 even
[19:33:14] <ssi> ok
[19:33:27] <pcw_home> then pullup to 5V with enable OPTO
[19:33:34] <ssi> right
[19:33:46] <pcw_home> ENA+ to 5V ENA- to /INH
[19:34:19] <pcw_home> analog out needs 5V, not field power
[19:34:24] <ssi> ok
[19:34:30] <ssi> the drives don't provide a 5v line
[19:34:35] <ssi> can I steal it from an encoder connector?
[19:34:41] <pcw_home> from cable or external
[19:34:50] <ssi> right now it's from cable
[19:34:56] <pcw_home> Probably not
[19:34:58] <ssi> ok
[19:35:18] <ssi> the field supply that I'm planning to use is a +12 +5 switcher that came out of the old centroid drive
[19:35:21] <ssi> I can use its 5v
[19:35:30] <ssi> I'll probably drive the external 5v with that as well actually
[19:36:23] <ssi> ok so right now, the drive isn't connected to the 7i77 at all
[19:36:25] <GammaX-Laptop> roycroft, where do you live?
[19:36:27] <pcw_home> Yeah that should be fine (check polarity carefully)
[19:36:28] <ssi> I have machine power on in axis
[19:36:31] <ssi> analogena is high
[19:36:40] <ssi> analogout0 is 0.3837 according to hal config
[19:36:48] <GammaX-Laptop> ssi, still havin issues/
[19:36:49] <ssi> but I still have 0v on the analog pins on the connector
[19:36:49] <GammaX-Laptop> ?

[19:37:28] <ssi> GammaX-Laptop: clearly

[20:08:27] <ssi> some folks that were referred by a friend

[20:09:10] <mrsun> on the sides =)
[20:09:19] <mrsun> so was thinking fly cutter :P
[20:09:30] <WalterN> hmm
[20:09:42] <ssi> they have angles, but if you have a 4th axis, you can use rotation of the axis to make that cut I believe

[20:47:26] <ssi> have you built cnc machines before?

[20:48:04] <ssi> hahaha ok then
[20:48:09] <ssi> small servo systems aren't as common
[20:48:17] <Gamma-X> you might have better accuracy with steppers lol
[20:48:37] <WalterN> how is that possible?
[20:48:48] <ssi> servos are only as accurate as your feedback
[20:48:59] <WalterN> with a good encoder it should be really accurate
[20:49:05] <ssi> yep
[20:49:07] <WalterN> and ballscrews
[20:49:25] <ssi> anyway
[20:49:31] <Gamma-X> and ALL tolerances are tite
[20:49:53] <ssi> you can estimate the torque you need if you know the mass of the axis you're trying to move and the acceleration you want to be able to achieve
[20:49:56] <Gamma-X> tight*? idk how to spell lol
[20:50:07] <ssi> but you need to know everything about your drive system
[20:50:09] <WalterN> lite tite
[20:50:12] <WalterN> heh
[20:50:25] <ssi> but the answer is "small"
[20:50:30] <WalterN> ssi: drive system?
[20:50:32] <ssi> you don't need much torque to run a laser
[20:50:40] <ssi> because there's no cutting forces
[20:50:40] <Gamma-X> http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/servo-nema23-kits/3-axis-nema23-350ozin-60v20a-psu-g230x-gecko-driver
[20:50:44] <WalterN> oh yeah
[20:50:54] <ssi> so really your torque just limits your max acceleration
[20:51:09] <WalterN> torque is only necessary for a decent acceleration for rapid movements I guess
[20:51:11] <ssi> sorry by drive system I meant how are your motors coupled to the load
[20:51:31] <ssi> you're gonna trade torque for speed in different ratios at each step
[20:52:23] <Gamma-X> what brand ball screws you going with?
[20:52:29] <Gamma-X> how big of a table you going to have?
[20:52:33] <WalterN> the good kind that dont suck

[20:53:27] <WalterN> *shrug* whatever till its finished...
[20:53:39] <ssi> if I were in your shoes
[20:53:45] <WalterN> $5,000?
[20:53:50] <ssi> I'd build the machine with some decent roton screws
[20:53:54] <ssi> not the best in the world, but they're inexpensive
[20:53:59] <Gamma-X> agreed ^^^
[20:54:04] <ssi> and I'd use steppers in the first iteration
[20:54:11] <ssi> the drives are much cheaper, much simpler
[20:54:14] <Gamma-X> also agreed ^^^
[20:54:15] <ssi> motors are much cheaper
[20:54:22] <ssi> and they're perfectly adequate

[20:55:32] <Gamma-X> getting into servos and drives it is much more complex.
[20:55:40] <WalterN> well... I just dont like screwing around..
[20:55:46] <mrsun> good thing about servo is that you wont lose position :P
[20:56:03] <Gamma-X> thats not neccasarily true

[20:58:46] <WalterN> well
[20:59:00] * WalterN grabs tape measure
[20:59:42] <WalterN> maybe 20"-24" of movement
[20:59:58] <ssi> 24x48 is a good size for a laser
[21:00:15] <ssi> you might be able to use something small like a 24v maxon servo

[21:08:47] <WalterN> used, but the diode laser was made in USA
[21:09:06] <WalterN> oh yeah
[21:09:11] <WalterN> CO2 lasers are cheap
[21:09:30] <Gamma-X> i want one!
[21:09:45] <WalterN> do it!
[21:09:55] <Gamma-X> you have link to the laser?
[21:10:08] <WalterN> cant fiber optic cable CO2 lasers though I dont think
[21:10:24] <ssi> I want to do a laser too
[21:10:29] <WalterN> well maybe
[21:10:32] <cpresser> Co2-lasers only work with mirrors
[21:10:34] <ssi> I'd like to build a 24x48 80W laser cutter
[21:10:34] <Gamma-X> I just wanna burn crap
[21:10:43] <ssi> co2
[21:10:48] <Gamma-X> ssi dont you remember the movie with val kilmer?
[21:10:54] <ssi> which one? :P

[21:11:02] <Gamma-X> with the laser?
[21:11:06] <Gamma-X> Real Genius
[21:11:09] <WalterN> cpresser: yeah, wavelength is a bit too long for fiber optics

[21:13:53] <WalterN> hmm
[21:14:38] <Real-Genius> ssi is there a way to test a stepper test to see if your losing steps?
[21:15:23] <ssi> in setup, with a dial indicator or tape measure
[21:15:32] <ssi> in normal operation, without axis position feedback, no not really
[21:16:25] <ssi> https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BI9845KCIAAI1xX.jpg:large
[21:16:27] <ssi> field power :D
[21:16:55] <Real-Genius> I did see leadshine has some stepper drivers that somehow stop stepp loss?
[21:17:06] <WalterN> hmm
[21:17:17] <WalterN> should I gear the servo down?
[21:17:32] <ssi> if you need to trade speed for torque, yes
[21:17:39] <ssi> if you were using something like those maxon servos I linked
[21:17:44] <ssi> theyr'e high rpm, low torque
[21:17:48] -!- morfic [morfic!~morfic@unaffiliated/morfic] has joined #linuxcnc
[21:17:54] <WalterN> most ballscrews have a pretty high twist rate
[21:17:56] <ssi> honestly, you're nowhere close to being able to make these kicd of choices yet
[21:18:01] <ssi> you need a motion design first :)
[21:18:32] <WalterN> motion design?
[21:19:01] <ssi> didn't we go through this already?
[21:19:14] <ssi> you need metally bits that slide around and hold your LAZERBEEMZ
[21:19:26] <ssi> you need ballscrews or belts or something to move them around
[21:19:33] <Real-Genius> do you have a sketch or dimensions of your ... "table" and laser holder?
[21:19:34] <ssi> (that's another thing, I'd do belt for a machine like that)
[21:19:40] -!- kizer [kizer!~nomad@unaffiliated/kizer] has joined #linuxcnc
[21:20:02] <ssi> you're honestly probably best off scaling up a reprap
[21:20:26] <ssi> I'm sure you have some reason to not like that idea :P
[21:20:56] <WalterN> had to look it up... and it looks like.. garbage

[21:21:19] <ssi> heh there are a lot of different types of reprap hardware
[21:21:23] <ssi> some of them are garbage
[21:21:26] <L84Supper> Input Voltage: ±5VDC Differential
[21:21:37] <ssi> http://reprap.org/mediawiki/images/thumb/b/b5/MendelMaxPhoto.JPG/535px-MendelMaxPhoto.JPG
[21:21:51] <ssi> something like that, made of extrusion and thompson shaft rails
[21:21:57] <ssi> belt driven
[21:22:16] <WalterN> L84Supper: I decided against galvo because I dont think it would work very well for engraving stuff
[21:22:18] <L84Supper> he can get a galvo setup for $150
[21:22:56] <ssi> hm that'd be an interesting way to do it
[21:22:59] <ssi> then you don't need any motion
[21:24:07] <Real-Genius> WalterN could just buy this...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X2-CNC-PLASMA-CNC-ROUTER-CUTTING-TABLE-/261203160816?pt=Power_Tools&hash=item3cd0ebeef0
[21:25:59] <L84Supper> WalterN: what would you be doing wrong for a galvo setup to not work well for engraving?
[21:26:53] <WalterN> L84Supper: donno... I figured the angle would screw with the way the engraving looks?
[21:27:09] <ssi> it'd be fine
[21:27:14] <ssi> a 30w laser doesn't "engrave"
[21:27:18] <ssi> it just burns a coating
[21:27:21] <ssi> so there's no depth

[21:34:45] <WalterN> could converge and make the beam roughly straight before it goes in to the galvos I guess... not sure what kind of beam density I could get by doing that
[21:35:19] <WalterN> or if mirrors are designed to handle it
[21:37:06] <WalterN> well, mirrors have a certain power density they are rated for
